Game On! Newcastle v Manchester City

Game On at SJP
Game On at SJP
Good afternoon all, and welcome to our first game of a new Premier League season. First up, a tough game against Manchester City.

A new look United will want to start the season off with a win in front of our own fans, at least in part to start putting some gloss on what has so far been a poor year in terms of results.

In the blue corner, Manchester City will be wanting to extend a rather fearsome unbeaten streak against us and will no doubt want to signal their intentions as they set about trying to retain the Premier League crown. Not that early indicators matter – City having won the league last season whilst spending the least calendar days sitting at the top of the table – but they will be wanting the win just as much as us.

Early team news, stats, facts and injury news can be found here in the match preview so if you haven’t already done so or just wish to have another look please feel free to take a peek by clicking the hyperlink above.

The game is live on Sky here in the UK and is also being shown on any number of overseas channels so picking up a stream shouldn’t be too much trouble. If you do find a particularly good stream then please share it by posting the link in the ‘comments’ section below.

Full team news will be published below as and when it becomes available.

As I said in the match preview, games like this are dead rubbers for me. I tend to expect nothing and hope for a lucky break. That being said, I’ve always said the minimum I expect is 100% effort from the players, and that should apply whoever we are playing against.

Howay the lads!

  1. Lets not forget there was two goal bound shots that were blocked by defenders. Perez and Gouffran’s 2nd shot after that corner…

  2. But Sharpy, we created the chances. City’s defence didn’t stop the chances being created and they certainly didn’t make our efforts on goal be wide of the target. The fact we created chances isn’t the issue – it’s the fact that not only didn’t we take any (that can happen) but we didn’t get one single effort on target! There will be games against lesser teams that we won’t create that amount of chances as they’ll sit back and I fear if we creat less chances we will convert less.

I honestly don’t see one player in the squad who might get double figures and that’s really bothering me.

  3. SHARPY I have said many many times Whilshire was all fissy and nee pop
never rated him should never have been picked for England, and if you have watched him closely he is a right sly dirty little git and rightly comes off worse hence him being injured a lot, very over-rated

  4. But anyway, it’s all conjecture as nobody knows. I just think a Rivière will have to be some player to be as good as Remy.

      (Quote)

  5. I also have to say that there’s no way on earth you could say Gouffran’s two efforts were on target. They were going across goal.

      (Quote)

  6. It was going into the back of the net just like Perez shot was if not for the world class defending by City.

      (Quote)

  7. Stu – the City defenders didn’t give our players any time or space. The efforts went wide because our players were closed down – I’m thinking in particular of the Cabella shot over the bar as a prime example. The Perez effort near the end was off target coz the defender – Fernando I think it was, slid in and deflected the shot.
I agree we may create fewer chances against lesser teams, but we also may be more accurate in those games.
Im not trying to be argumentative mate, honestly. I’m just ready to give them a chance and if we are still struggling to score after 6-7 games, then I may start to worry. But these players have scored goals for their previous clubs, they’ve scored goals in pre season and so far we have played 1 PL game against the Champs – and created as many chances as them.
I’m ready to at least give them the Villa and Palace game before I start properly judging or critising them.

  8. I’ve just smuggled a replacement manager in from Scotland. Shhh everybody!!! It’s a surprise for Mike. His name is Kevin Keegan. He has some strange ideas like giving the manager power to run the club but I like the sound of him! Let’s give him a try Mike!!!

      (Quote)

  9. We’ve got some good young lads in the squad now but we need a manager to bring them along. Alain Perdue has had his time, more than enough of it actually. And Carver looks absolutely miserable on the bench. Probably sick of listening to Perdue’s drivel.

      (Quote)

  10. I like the look of Riviere and Cabella. Lots of talent there. Riviere in particular will need some time. Perez is very young but also looks promising. A decent midfield but the same pairing at CB will be a problem for us.

Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
    We’re on to victory someday.
Keep the faith mates. Some day Mike will see the light and sell up.

  12. Sharpy17 This club would be a last resort for Grenier. I can’t honestly see Mike stomping up the money for him. Arsenal would seem the no.1 destination for him but if Lyon desperately need the cash then it would either mean losing Benny or even Toite so there is a price to pay. I’m hoping Mike will sell up and buy rangers.

  13. I would think it’s fair to say that the following players aren’t in Pardews plans in the coming season, so I done some digging to see what their wages are:

    Ben Arfa – £65k
    Mapou – £60k
    Jonas – £50k
    Obertan – £35k
    Vuckic – £15k
    Ferguson – £8k
Marv – £55k (but has been loaned out)

That’s £288k pw we are paying out to players who aren’t contributing much at all.
Clearing some or all of these players from our wage bill would be a priority for me in the next few weeks. Clear these wages and we can afford to pay bigger wages for better players.

  16. @Sharpy

Rivière did look pacy but he also looked an amateur in from of goal.

I will let you keep burying yourself into the already huge hole you’ve dug yourself into and there’s enough room for most on here who have agreed with you. 😉

Just watch them stand on your head in an effort to escape once reality sinks in. They’ll all deny they said it. They’ll all blame everyone but themselves. Seen it all before. I know who they are. Scurrilous little creatures. 😉

I repeat, we don’t have any creativity up front, central midfield or on the flanks.

When injuries strike, the rookies will be drafted in and the club will sink or swim, or at least tread water depending how they adapt. Unfortunately, only Aaron’s and Perez look half decent but against top players they’ll like drop like stones to the bottom of your big hole. 😉

      (Quote)

  17. Troy – I am getting behind my team and supporting their new players, if that’s digging a hole then I’m happy to jump right in – and anyone who wants to join me is more than welcome.
It certainly isn’t blind faith, because I know that these players are new to the league and to the club. But Remy was new to the team last season, and we had far fewer creative players on the pitch last season.
Its your opinion that Remy is so much better than Rivière – time will tell. But Remy is available for around £8m, yet he’s still wearing a QPR top?!.

It’s your opinion mate, and absolutely your right to write these players off without even giving them a chance.
It my choice to reserve judgement and get behind them and support them. If they don’t produce, then feel free to gloat, feel free to try and belittle me or whatever you need to do to entertain yourself – I truly don’t mind, because quite frankly it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

      (Quote)

  18. The fact that Remy did so well last season in a pretty uninspiring team says everything about Remy’s qualities.

But I must say every game I support the team, but on this forum I tell people how I feel. No point doing at the game as that just wouldn’t help them.

The best thing to do to see how strong our squad is, is to look at the bench and on Saturday there wasn’t one player who we could trust to change a game. Been like that for a long time. i could accept it when we were losing £30m a year, but not when making huge profits on player trading and also operating profits.

    it’s just not cricket!

      (Quote)

  19. Stu – likewise. I’ve been critical of our defence in both pre season and against City. But I can base that on how they (under) performed for us last season as well – for me there has been no improvement.
But it’s opinion only on the forwards. None of us know for sure how they will work out. There are plenty of sub £10m CFs who done well and scored goals. I could understand the ‘they aren’t good enough’ craic if they still hadnt scored after 5-6 games, I’ll likely be saying the same, or starting to question them at least anyway.
But I just don’t think we’ve seen enough of them yet to be able to properly judge.

  20. Can Colback replace Tiote? I like Tiote but he doesnt do much going forward and is a little reckless around our box…and he seems to wants out.. I reckon Sissoko could push on while Colback tidies up. We also have Abeid and Anita.

I bit short on defensive midfielders should tiote leave but if it can fund the purchase of a centrerhalf , I’d be happy.

      (Quote)

  21. So the bidding for Tiote has started. But late isn’t it to be selling? But one thing is clear; when the bidding starts it’s not long until we sell.

What’s the betting that we end another transfer window with a net spend in the minus category… Colback will be Tiotes replacement not Gosling as we assumed.

      (Quote)

  22. we still need a creative midfielder other than Cabella. We need a centerhalf, creative midfielder and ideally, another forward. 3 players with restricted squad places to fill. 😕

    time to sell some players…

      (Quote)

  23. Surely toto won’t be going anywhere? Can’t see this happening, the Russians would have to bid a lot for us to consider.

      (Quote)

  24. Some people might not rate Tiote as much as I do, but surely most people see him as regular squaddie at the lowest. Players like Benny (who I would rather keep but forget that for now) Jonas, Obertan and Taylor surely have to be knocked off first. Yes, people don’t want them, but unless someone threw ridiculous money for Tiote then I don’t see why we’d sell.

      (Quote)

  25. @Newkie.

I’d sell all that you mentioned and would ideally keep tiote. BUT i’m not Ashley wanting 8mil + for a 28yr old..

although I’d be happy to give Obertan another chance since we havent got many wingers 😯 he’s looked hungry pre-season and Sunday.

      (Quote)

  26. Some comments from Luis Suarez:
“I’m really pleased to be here in Spain. I’m going to focus on what I do best…..bite people. I’ve already given my new manager a little nibble just to let him know I”m around. I bit Messi on the left buttock just the other day as well. It’s all going well so far!!!

      (Quote)

  27. Mark – I do agree that as he’s still here and looks willing to do a shift he should get the odd chance, but he’s had a couple of false dawns now, people say he just needs confidence but there is no way he will generate the full backing of the crowd without first pulling out a few worldies that change the majority opinion of him. It’s a catch 22 and I can’t see it working.

Re Tiote, he may be getting on but personally I think another two seasons and we’d still be able to flog him to someone silly. He may lose some pace, but defensive mids can still play well into their thirties and Tiote strikes me as someone who would keep himself physically fit. When QPR get relegated/and promoted again, we could send him off there surely..8 mil now is hardly big bucks.

  28. I think we’ve got to find the right level of intensity. We’ve got to think like honey badgers. We’re lean, mean and we don’t give a sh*t what others think. We’ve got to tear the testicles off of Villa on Saturday! Grrrrr!

      (Quote)

  29. Mark mate, Obertan has no honey badger qualities. He’s more squidlike as you well know. Do we really need a squid in our side? No we don’t. We’re aiming for controlled ferocity. Or even uncontrolled ferocity. We’re head butters and ******** biters mate! Grrrrr!

      (Quote)

  30. Tiote for Grenier, Sinclair and Richards please 😀

Tiote will go, MA will pocket the difference and pards will say we cant get anyone over the line

      (Quote)

  31. And by the way lads. I’ve just been going through my Official Blog Secretary notes. A few items:
    1. Should we send Carver a card to cheer him up? He really looks quite miserable. Possibly he’s had to listen to Pardew and realizes we have no hope of finishing in the top 8?
    2. Could we get the club to adopt the honey badger as our club animal. Other clubs have hawks and falcons and cool things like that? We would be tops in coolness if we had wor own honey badger.
    3. Why is Mike showing up at the ground again? I don’t like it. Hasn’t anybody threatened him with grievous bodily harm recently?
    4. I believe Benny should streak across the pitch naked at half time to bring his plight to the attention of the supporters again. Lambeezee did it, why not Benny?

      (Quote)

  32. Hard tackling in the midfield, Find Riviere in space. A lot of pace in the lineup up now. But more players involved in the attack please! More players in the box. An isolated striker up front by himself is hopeless Pards.

  35. One thing that really bothers me is that Obertan has no honey badger qualities. He is more of a squid as we all know. Do we want a squid in the squad so to speak? Let me know what you think lads. 😯

  37. @Newkie.

tbh, I think 8mil is far too low. take 10at least or nowt. We got 12 for Debs at 28.

Aye, I’m no Obertan fan but Marv has left Benny’s only hunger is for a kebab and the rest are weak.. I think i’d rather have Ober than Sammy 😯

A bloke I know in Gossy said Benny is in his restaurant twice a week. He said the kite on him is unbelievable. I can’t see anyone signing him this Summer. what a waste..

      (Quote)

  38. I’ve always been a fan of Tiote, but the modern day PL midfielder has to be more than just a physical presence. He’s not the best passer of the ball and at times is a sending off waiting to happen.
£8m really doesn’t seem much for the lad, but if we can get Richards for around £4m and Sinclair for around £4m, then that would seem good business. If the £8m was used to bring Grenier in – that would be great business IMO.

I know we have Anita, Colback and Sissoko that can play that holding role, but Raylor could probably cover that position as well, and I’m wondering about Santon as well?.

  39. Roll up, Roll up. NUFC player auction open until 31st August. All you need to do is make an offer, wait for it to be rejected, bid again and then sign the player.

    Tiote is first lot up.

How thoroughly depressing for some on here who had built up this bizarre image of the club being well run and having a better squad than last season. Allusions will be shattered.

Some of us however, won’t blink an eye as we saw it coming a mile off!

    😯

      (Quote)

  40. 🙄 Roll up, roll up, to see the gloating fans that have seen well into the future and predicted player sales. Then stare in slack jawed wonder as players are sold during the transfer window, just like they predicted! 😯 .. Then watch in bewilderment as they bask in the misery that is to befall us. 😆 😆
The mirror reports that Tiote is for sale and some fans worlds turn black… 😕 They do say that misery loves company! 😛

      (Quote)

  41. Why don’t we sell Anita and keep Tiote?
Because Tiote is worth three times as much as Anita.
Cannot see any logic in selling Tiote and keeping Anita.
Get rid of the donkeys on our books before getting rid of our best players

      (Quote)

  42. Rumour mill
NEWCASTLE have emerged as strong favourites to sign highly-rated Celtic stopper Virgil van Dijk, with the Magpies reportedly weighing up a deadline-day bid.

Newcastle United could make a double swoop for Manchester City’s English duo Micah Richards and Scott Sinclair.

also still out there Clément Grenier & Alexandre Lacazette

    with HBA & Tiote out.

    http://swol.co/great-scott-could-a-newcastle-united–glasgow-rangers-football-partnership-benefit-both-northern-giants/35278

      (Quote)

  43. Toby…The “logic” (if you can call it that), is that you can only sell a player if another club wants to buy him. As far as I know no club has shown an interest in Anita. 😉
Jonas and Benny have no chance at all of featuring so get rid of them rather than Tiote, we need a CB so if we need to get rid of a current one to do that then just feckin do it…that would be my “logic”

      (Quote)

  44. “reportedly weighing up a deadline-day bid”…if true why wait until deadline day if they want him?
    a) Hope that his club are desperate to sell so try and get him cheap on the last day?
    b) Go in with a low ball offer, club reject it…”oh well we tried our best”
    c) Put in an offer on the last day knowing his club will not sell as they have no time to replace him?… “oh well we tried”
    d) The story is bollocks or at least the deadline day bit.

Take your pick depending on viewpoint, I think I’ll go with “d” 😉

      (Quote)

  45. It wont happen til next wednesday anyway.

    How’s about
    Sell Saylor replace with Richards
Buy Van Dijk with MYB going to Celtic on a season long loan to rebuild his confidence
Sell Jonas & replace with Sinclair
    Swap HBA for Grenier
Wait til January to see how our strikers get on.

    That should do it

      (Quote)

  46. Prem…I think the “sell” Saylor and Jonas is the flaw in your plan 😛

I think it would take Benny plus cash for Grenier which I’d be over the moon with, that swap and cash deal has been kicking about since the start of the month so would be nice if it was one of the few rumours/stories that had some truth to it.

      (Quote)

  47. So the Pope rings Ashley to sanction Colo back to “His” club. We ask him to lean on Celtic. Oh and will he take Jonas as well ?

      (Quote)

  48. We will sell Tiote right near windows end when we run out of time to replace him, it’s a familiar theme we are all used too now.

      (Quote)

  49. The link to Arsenal seems to be that they are generally after a midfielder and from what i gather the bid from moscow was a couple of months ago and the press have just got wind of it

      (Quote)

  50. Prem, Maybe not but the cash could be used for other needed players and the time scale thing still applies. I actually like Tiote and when ever he had the armband played some of his best games for us. Still Pards has given vice cap to De Jong now so maybe Tiote isn’t in our plans long term.

  52. SANTII @429

I agree with you there. The only non-mega rich club to have had a comparable transfer window to us is Everton. They have been building up their squad for several more years than us and so they’ve brought some fantastic youngsters through their youth team too. Top youngsters will want to join a stable top 10 PL club like Everton and I want them to join us for the same reason.

I do question Everton’s strength in depth but the Lukaku purchase is excellent in terms of the player. But I would have doubts about them if he gets injured…and he wasn’t cheap at £28M!

      (Quote)

  53. Loose transfer gossip…I don’t think any of it has any substance. I’m sure we’re constantly looking at players and trying to get some good deals (a la Mike Ashley’s modus operandi) but it all feels like paper talk to me.

Tiote leaving is a possibility (partly because he’s that age) but only if we get a lot of money for him (which I can’t see us getting). And I think we’d need to have a replacement lined up if he left too.

      (Quote)

  54. In Ashley’s world selling Tiote is a no brainer. He will look at the squad and think Colback and Taylor can replace him. Whether they’re as good isn’t his issue.

      (Quote)

  55. Tiote has been ‘sold’ almost every window that I can remember since he arrived. I suppose on the balance of probabilities it has to happen sometime.

  56. TDS @ 517 Early days, mate. Early days. I was quite angry with my manager for changing the line-up hours before kick off. Dropped Weiman and Diego Costa for Bojan and Giroud. Would have won if he’d left it my way.

Anyway, I sacked him for insubordination. Expect a win this weekend against a very poor Aussie Magpies team.
