The real reason United fans aren’t sad to see Pardew go

The myth behind the man
The myth behind the man
If, as expected, Alan Pardew is confirmed as Crystal Palace manager it leaves our club with a position to fill.

From the outside it looks as though Pardew has done a decent job at United with some sections of the media branding our treatment of him unfair during recent rumblings of discontent.

We keep hearing that we finished fifth, that we have unreasonable expectations, that our final league positions have been alright. Apparently we expect Champions League football and should just pipe down because we’ve won nothing for years and should just be happy with staying in the Premier League.

However I’ve stumbled across a page of facts that at least paint a fairer picture of why so many fans were becoming unhappy. As I said in a previous article, you can’t dine out on a fifth placed finished forever, but I’d like you all to cast your minds back to the end of the 2011/2012 season where times were happier and we’d just unexpectedly qualified for the Europe League. Now I’d like you to take a look at the table below…

Points table

All of these statistics have been compiled since we finished fifth so there are two complete seasons plus the games we’ve played this season which is quite sizeable example in fairness. They also compare with teams who have remained in the Premier League for the entire period. So, starting from the top left….

Games Won: These stats cover a total of 95 league games of which we’ve won 32. That’s a win ratio of just over 33%.

Games Lost: Of the 95 games, we’ve lost 45 which is 47% of our league games since the 2011/2012 season.

Clean Sheets: It’s not good reading here either as we’ve managed to maintain a clean sheet on just 21 occasions. Granted it’s unfair to land all of that at the feet of Pardew but there are signs that the defence needs work which have gone unheeded.

Failed to Score: We’ve fired blanks in 33 of these of these 95 games. Only Stoke and Aston Villa have failed to find the net more than us.

Goals For: Not good reading here either with just 107 goals scored, or an average of just over one per game.

Goals Against: A total of 153 goals conceded – 1.6 per match – the worst of the 15 teams sampled.

Goal Difference: A net goal difference of -46 which has only been ‘bettered’ by Aston Villa and their goal difference of -55.

Total Points: We’ve amassed 113 points – just under 1.2 each game.

Some of them aren’t bad but others are chronic and should help with why some fans have just had enough. Remember we’re not even talking about the waffle, flannel, headbutts, pushes, swearing, record losing streaks, historic runs of derby defeats and other incidents that have happened on his watch.

I’ve written this because I was stood having a coffee yesterday and was talking about football to a colleague. The subject came up about Pardew to Palace and his response was the same as many on the outside have said – “I thought he was doing OK for you lot,” he quipped. After a while pointing things out he got where we’re coming from.

So if you find yourself in a situation like that, whip this article out on your phone and show people that all has not been rosey in the garden of St James’ Park for some time and that we’re not a reactionary bunch. We’re just fed up with the excuses.

Agree or disagree?

  1. Get in the away fans, tell it straight. Time to step up the Ashley out chants, his patsy is gone now so he can have it with both barrels the fat ****.

  2. Ashley got just what he wanted then. There’s a top-10 side capable of decent cup runs in the current squad, but there’s also a relegation battle in them if they are allowed to chuck te season now like last season.

      (Quote)

  3. Newks, The sad thing is that this would of happened even under Percy, there is a clear mandate when it comes to cup comps .

      (Quote)

  4. Kim – at least we beat City and lost to Spurs in the capital cup, I for one was happy with the League Cup effort this year. Carver had a chance to show some backbone which people were slagging Pardew off for but he’s bottled it royally.

      (Quote)

  5. What exactly has this team to play for now?, no chance of a league title as always , so the cup was the chance of some achievement . We can’t even be sure of top 10 with our injuries and suspensions, factor in a massive chance of Sissoko going and it’s another written off season .

      (Quote)

  6. Carver is a total and utter Wan_er, best team my A-se. Remember when he had a go at the fans earlier in the season for slanging Pardew off, as for Ashley and Charnley they are minime’s of each other, they could not care to damms about the fans, thought that for a while and todays shambolic effort proves it.

  7. Newks ,but that was our best showing in recent times tho and I wouldn’t mind betting jabba would of lost it had we gone on to reach the final.

      (Quote)

  8. what do fans expect, the club have already come out and says the cups mean nowt, the only way to change that is dont go to cup games.im sorry but the fans who keep turning up week after week are the problem they have well and truly bent owa for ashley.

      (Quote)

  9. Agree Hitman, its definitely time to stay away, season tickets is paid for but its time to show how we feel, and this time mean it.

      (Quote)

  10. Carver, stone and co are all part of Percy’s set up. Need a clear out now ,new owner ,coaches and manager . If Carver is bowing to Jabba pressure then shame on him .

      (Quote)

  11. Kim – Maybe he would have, but at least we tried and the players had been amped up for it. We had a decent go at the Europa as well.

If we were struggling or in multiple competitons I might understand it, but to not try it today is poor. We need a win to settle tje fans. Usually if we at least put out weakened teams the intention was to do as best we could, but from the way we played today it seems we didn’t even bother to try.

  12. Just looked at the ‘Newsnow’ headlines, theres not even a NUFC Official comment , Lee Marshall who is supposed to do that,” where the hell are you”.

      (Quote)

  13. Hitman – Agreed, if people want to see a change then that is the only way, not “oh I want Ashley out but instead I’m going to boo Pardew and walk out after a while during the game, then cry for him to be sacked, but then get back on side when we start winning and start going to matches again”.

No. If you want Ashley out do something properly and stick to it.

      (Quote)

  14. Its only the fans that can sort this mess out, we either have to be UNITED in our feelings or just accept our lot, for the love of our club, but at present, we are just lying down and taking it.

      (Quote)

  15. The next big turning point will be whether we offload top players in the transfer window, and as things seem to be shaping up, it looks more than likely that’s what is going to happen.

First PL team to exit the FA Cup, bet your happy now Ashley, tops players will all want out. Balance sheet in a couple of weeks will show us in profit, mission achieved, give Charnley and Irving a bonus, but kick the fans hard, normal service.

      (Quote)

  16. So if Carver put out the best team available does that mean Sissoko, Perez, Colback etc didn’t play because they are getting sold and didn’t want to have them risk injury before transfer window?

      (Quote)

  17. I don’t really understand how criticising Carver can be criticised? Nobody wants him anyway. Name anybody at any paper, any pundit, any blog, anyone in the world who thinks he would be a good Manager at NUFC?

Some of us have a foreboding that he might be foisted on us by the Fatman until the end of the season, but we don’t want him. Somebody seems happy (Troy) that we might get this buffoon as a replacement so he can continue his rant about Pardew. What is the F2cking point in that? Aren’t we NUFC supporters and not Pardew supporters? Wouldn’t we all want our team to do well, not want to prove a pathetic point about Pardew being average?

I don’t want Carver as Manager. He has to take some of the blame for our useless set pieces and he is angry and ugly. That has nothing to do with the last two games, I didn’t think he was any good long before that.

      (Quote)

  18. Heap of sh*t. Unfortunately no chance of any kind of united protest. Our support is too fractured. Where the hell are the Qatari bunch who are supposedly interested in buying a premier league club. Give fatty an offer he can’t refuse and Troy give it a rest man.

      (Quote)

  19. I am sick of Mike Ashley. I just wish he would **** off! I suppose he will hire another **** manager and sell our best player this coming january. He will hide in his castle because his a coward that’s pissed 52,000 people up.

      (Quote)

  20. Dear Newcastle United Fan’s,

I’m sorry about your defeat today. I have some good news for you. I have just got off the phone to Mike Ashley and he wants me to manage the club until the end of the season. I promise to do everything I can to finish higher up the table.

  21. Newkie @1141: the only place I saw people change their minds after a few wins was on the Chronicle website. In other places, people were happy that we won and hopefully would not be relegated BUT at the same time were very skeptical that anything had changed. In fact, most thought Pardew had got lucky and that he was still useless and a tw@t.

Keeping Carver is a continuation of the Pardew era, so I want him gone, even as a coach.

      (Quote)

  22. Dear me. Kim & Psychs were expecting better things once Pards left. And they are surprised when they don’t get it. YCMIU. 🙄

      (Quote)

  23. There are other options to Carver.
Carver is a continuation of the Pardew methods and toadying.
    We should get someone else.
There are others out there better than Carver.

      (Quote)

  24. Not liking Pardew and not wanting Carver are two separate issues. Someone will conflate the two though in a pathetic attempt to further their bluster.

      (Quote)

  25. @Troy. Have you ever heard, If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all You seem to get off being a nobheed. saying that, you’ve done it for years so why stop nu 😛

      (Quote)

  26. we know what our priorities are but at least the players show some attitude. we always go out early, the last five years at the first hurdle, so its not just Carver, Pardews record absolutely stinks too.

I doubt the players in the last 5 yrs have been asked not to try? throw the game? 😯

Or is it we have zero passion for cups and Pardew, carver are just **** 😆

      (Quote)

  27. I think protests need to start now. Fans not turning up. protests outside the gates

Rangers fans turned up at his shops, some causing a blockage… why dont we ever do things like this.. 🙄

  28. Brett Strength

If I referred to you or anyone else as a nobheed I would get threatened with the ban hammer. Now that’s naughty. 😉

I am entitled to criticise Psychs or anyone else for that matter as I vehemently disagree with their views.

Psychs continuously throws bile at Carver and I had months of it with Pardew.

He’s entitled to spew that bile but I am equally entitled to respond to it and will continue to do so. 😉

      (Quote)

  29. if you referred to anyone else as a nobheed, you’d be a hypocrite 😆

the banhammer doesnt scare me mate, 😯 i won’t pen a begging letter of apology to toonsy 😛

but sorry for the guy n gals to read such childish bahaviour..

  30. Well the one thing that comes out of today is that Merson ,that font of all knowledge should now realise that the fan thing with the London issue is a mute point since Carver is a local 😉

      (Quote)

  31. I don’t understand how NOT wanting Carver as Manager can be considered anything other than being totally consistent?

He is steeped in Pardew’s methods.
He went on a rant at the away end to defend his former boss against fans who were freely expressing an opinion.
I will repeat myself, but he must take some responsibility for our terrible set pieces.
Invoking the memory of Bobby Robson is a pathetic attempt at manipulating some of the duller NUFC fans (the ones that stand behind the Sky cameras on transfer deadline day).

      (Quote)

  32. We like to get those cup competitions out of the way quickly and painlessly (except for the supporters of course). What’s the next shambolic move Mike? We can hardly wait.

      (Quote)

  33. Kim
I knew he would be an option at least temporarily if Pards left. For me, he has no track record, he has shown today that the FA Cup is not a priority however, as long as he doesn’t take the team plummeting to the relegation zone then I won’t shout and scream.

I don’t expect anything better than Pardew but Carver has not been given a chance yet so I will give him time.

I will never expect anything other than mediocrity under Ashley but some including you were expecting to see more entertaining football, better tactics, better league finishes and honesty in front of the cameras. In addition I’m sure you expected a more postie approach to the FA Cup.

I didn’t. That’s the club policy. No matter who is in charge, that won’t change.

      (Quote)

  34. “I put the strongest team out with the exception of Ayoze Perez. He’d ran out of fuel” “It’s hugely embarrassing the crowd booed the players at the end – but they are entitled to do that.”

“The one thing as far as I was concerned is that I wasn’t going to let our players leave the pitch before going over and thanking the fans. And I was right there at the front, and so I should be because I can take it, I’m a big boy.”

“Newcastle’s fans should expect better. I’m one of them. I’ve been there with them and I would be the same.” “They travelled all this way having spent a lot of money over the festive period, and they’re entitled to their opinions.”

    Pearson
“It’s seldom you see football shirts of other teams in Newcastle. The fans are frustrated.” “With a club the size of Newcastle United – the expectation is always going to be big.” “It’s a club that’s potentially huge.”

      (Quote)

  35. Carver has only been in charge 1 game. I think the fans at the end were just at boiling point after chanting for Ashley to go. Carver shouldnt be blamed even tho he’s not equipped to deal with NUFC

So sissoko was either injured or he’s being sold…

I was OK with the team, just not the manor of the attitude of the players selected. zero effort. Maybe they have been asked not to try..

      (Quote)

  36. Troy, Carver is just a continuation of Percy, they worked together so seemingly agreed on tactics, set plays and so on. The only difference is that Carver is honest after a game which is some relief from excuse bingo I must admit.

Would just love him to make a stand and for every coach Jabba approaches to tell him to do one .

  39. Brett Strength

You’re right. Carver shouldn’t be blamed after only his second game in charge. Read the hatred of Psychs posts. It’s irrational. But I blame you for encouraging him.

      (Quote)

  40. like Pardew, Carvers in a position he shouldnt find himself in. Managing a club too big for him.

I doubt Carver would have any knowledge anyway regarding players. just assuming of course

Sorry for calling you a nob Troy 😉

  43. At the time when all that is going on it’s difficult to say how you feel, but obviously deep down inside I want to be head coach of this football club.

“I am going to throw my hat into the ring. I did tell the players but I couldn’t make it public – now I am.

“I have got to be honest. I haven’t spoken with (owner) Mike (Ashley), but there’s no need for me to speak with Mike or be in touch. 😛 The role is of head coach, not manager. The job of a head coach is to prepare the players and the team for the next match, which is what I’ve been doing.”

      (Quote)

  44. Kim

Do you really believe he was being honest?

Would he not have been honest by telling us that he didn’t play his strongest team because the club see the cups as a hindrance to their premier league campaign. Lee Charney has publicly stated this.

Why didn’t Carver play his strongest team?

You may think he’s being honest when he says he’s a toon fan and was one of us not long ago. Would he not have wanted the manager to put his strongest team out?

He is exactly the same as Pardew but with a Geordie accent with different excuses. I’m not fooled. You may be. You’ll sharp get sick of him saying he is a Geordie and supports the team if the results aren’t up to your expectations.

However, I’m not surprised by any of this like you or others are. Pardew was Ashleys puppet and now Carver is and so will the next manager.

Same old same old, as they say.

      (Quote)

  45. I’m not too fussed about a head-coach (puppet) just a half decent one, Pardew wasnt that guy, either is Carver.

      (Quote)

  46. Troy: I don’t hate Carver and never said anything of the sort. I think he is not good enough for NUFC and is ugly.

      (Quote)

  47. Carver said: ‘I’ve not spoken to Mike and my only communication has been with Lee Charnley on Monday night and a short conversation last night just about the game today.

Last nights convo was probably along the lines of. You know our priorities, we don’t do cups due to it being an entry into Europe, if you want the job make sure we lose. 🙄

      (Quote)

  48. Psychs

You’ve labelled Carver, shyte, ugly and angry and would sack him now.

This was after 1 game in charge.

  49. sell Rivere, Cabella, Mbiwa, Tiote, terminate the contracts of Marv, Benny and give the money to Carr to waste on some other French duds. 🙄

right, im getting negative. I’m off for a Chinese 😀

  50. Batty

Riviere has struggled since he arrived and Campbell is still raw. I would have played Perez however he wasn’t even on the bench. Why would he be. He might have helped us get through the next round. The club don’t want that. Pardew never tried to progress and now Carver is following suit. The next manager will have to agree to that policy if he wants the job.

Some believe the new manager will bring more entertaining football, better tactics, positive tactics in the cups, honesty in front of the cameras

It won’t happen whilst Ashley is here. But Batty we told them this year’s ago and they wouldn’t listen

      (Quote)

  51. Troysta @1190: it is not after one game in charge. I wouldn’t want carver to begin with and his record is shyte with the other clubs he has managed. He is an angry man as shown by his attack on NUFC away fans and you certainly can’t dispute that he is ugly.

So, do you have a point or are you just saying the opposite to what I say?

      (Quote)

  52. Would have played a stronger team,if he was holding.some back in view of Chelsea game it was a waste of a chance of going into next round as I doubt we will get anything there
