Next in line!

Forget the cup. Forget Pardew. The only question of any importance for me at the moment is who will be the next manager, or should that be head coach?
Working within what we see as the main parameters of the job – and whether they are true or not is irrelevant for this exercise – which appear to be centred on budget constraints for new players and personal wage demands, who do you want next, and why?
The internet is full of shortlists for the job, so you should have no end of options available to you. I would imagine just about every possibility has been mentioned somewhere.
Having googled my way through many many of them, my vote goes to Lucien Favre.
I know almost nothing about the guy other than what I’ve read on the internet, but he may well fit the bill: he understands the head coach role, works with limited resources, works with young guys, plays a fast counter-attacking kind of football which would take Pard … er … the tactics of the last guy we had, to that coveted new level. He speaks French and English and has had some success with moderate sides.
I have no idea what his wage demands would be so it’s pointless me making any comments there, but perhaps a lucrative incentive package might help smooth the path.
So, for the sake of getting another thread running, throw your hat in the ring (rather than talking through it) …

  1. Yeah it’s not hard to have score goals and have exciting players when you spend about 35 million on a front line, which is more than we’ve spent on our entire squad in years. Apparently they still can’t afford to pay for the stadium though so it’s only right we pay for their stadium while they splash out on players for big money. Joke 😐

I thought in our 1-0 loss to them they were everything Big Sam epitomises, minging football and grounded out. We were pretty hopeless that day yet they made nothing out of it and were probably lucky to get the win.

  2. Kim – that he does. Now if he can manage with the same relentless effort that Speed played the game then we’re on to a winner! Assuming he’s any good like 🙂

  3. I am not going do any Carver bashing as I think he should be given a free pass tomorrow unless we get absolutely hammered and he set us up to fail with poor team selection and tactics, and no in game management. We will see. I still don’t think he is the right man for the job because of his previous record of bouncing around the second tier clubs with very limited success, lack of head coaching experience (Managerial), and availability of others with fresh ideas. We need a refresh at NUFC and Carver will not bring this.

  4. I saw some stat a while ago that the average goals from corners in the premier league is 4 or 5 (I think I am right on that). We scored one in two years. In the end I found it funny that the crowd would cheer wildly when we got a corner because it had got to the point that it was more an opportunity for a counter attack – that’s why they decided to leave Coloccini on the half way line, because he and Williamson were too slow to get back.

All that said, I still think there was an element of bad luck and that it was a bit of an anomaly. You would think you would fluke a rebound or a keeper like Mignolet would be flapping. I do blame bad coaching and slow center halfs but there had to be some bad luck also which will hopefully even out as it usually does.

Now, the free kick routine from just inside the oppositions half where they banged it to Williamson at the corner of the box – that was bad coaching. Every team in the league knew what was coming and set up for the counter.

  5. Eric – I think you’re right in saying a lot of it is luck, but also the quality of the service and the abilities of our own players to put it in the net. I think almost everyone noticed a drop in quality with the drifted free kicks or general corners once Barton left, and they’ve been worse this season without Cabaye. Equally our main aerial threats in the last couple of years have been Ba or Shola or Taylor, with the last two only being squaddies. Sissoko is woeful for a big man, Williamson can only head out and even Colo is better at shooting with his feet.

I think I’m right in saying we’ve scored about three corner goals this season? I’m not sure if our short corner that resulted in williamson knocking it down for Cisse to poach actually counts as a corner goal though, I suppose it becomes “Open play” as soon as you pass it rather than swing it?

  6. I mean we cycle about five players taking set pieces these days with Perez, Cabella, Colback, Goof. Dummett takes free kicks and shots at goal ffs. Cabaye was guaranteed to score three or four, possibly more and usually very important free kicks a season. Look at us now…Sunderland fans laugh at the fact we have Colback taking corners, and it is a poor enditement on our players if he wasn’t even considered to take them for Sunderland, but is our no.1!

Why do so many of the people on here bite when Troy dangles a carrot in their face, surely you have realised by now that even if he was initially going to make a valid point or cohesive argument, the temptation to wind someone up when they present him with an opportunity seems to great for him.

    Shearer on Man U

Speaking exclusively in a One-on-One interview in the February 2015 issue of FourFourTwo, Shearer reveals how and why he eventually decided to turn down the Red Devils’ overtures.

“Manchester United was the probable move,” he says. “My wife and I had even picked out a house.

“I then got a call from Kevin Keegan and we set up a meeting at David Platt’s mother-in-law’s house in Cheshire. On that same day, in that same house, I would also meet Fergie.

“Fergie came in and the first thing he said was, ‘Am I first or has Keegan got to you?’ I told him I had already spoken with Keegan and he said, ‘That’s me ****ed then.’

“He was wrong. I still felt I was going to Old Trafford. Then I got another call from Kevin asking to see me one more time.

“I thought ‘why not?’ because it was lingering there, this idea that it would be a dream to play for my club, for Newcastle. I went to meet Keegan again, I looked at my missus and said, ‘It’s time to go back home.'”

The fan’s are the best in the country and will fill the stadium anyway.

Dear Mike (I hope you don’t mind me calling you Mike as you’ve been called much worse)
As a loyal supporter of Newcastle United since 1953 I am hereby offering my services as manager for the remainder of this season for minor defrayal of my costs (travel, manly supplies etc etc). I have extensive football experience at lower levels and can quickly renew my coaching badges. I am a serious proponent of the Cruyff approach to football. We will play on the carpet, full out ball dropping whiz bang attacking footy under my incredible leadership. I will bring in several intense, motivated coaches of my choosing. I will work closely with Graham Carr to recruit the least expensive talent in North Shields. Trust in me Mike. This could be the beginning of something beautiful.
    Yours with all due Seriosity

  25. Prem @ 838 Don’t necessarily disagree with all that he says but I wouldn’t call it balanced.

    As an example:

“Strip away the opinions and the spin, both positive and negative, and Pardew’s time on Tyneside can be summed up as this – one successful season, two boringly average ones tainted by early cup exits and one terrible one that almost ended in relegation to the Championship.”

He sets up the paragraph by professing balance. He then goes on to use negative and emotive words to make sure the correct message is passed on to the reader: two boringly average ones tainted by … and one terrible one … relegation

It wouldn’t be the same piece if he had said: “Strip away the opinions and the spin, both positive and negative, and Pardew’s time on Tyneside can be summed up as this – one incredibly successful season, one year of regeneration, one season which saw great highs and lows, and one where he was hampered by a successful Europa Cup run.”

All arguably true. But that sort of positivity just wouldn’t fit the intention of the article – which is to give the writer’s opinion and spin on Pardew’s time at Newcastle (and to play victim).

I think you’re doing a wonderful job running Newcastle United. I think most fan’s will be excited to finish in the top 10 again this season. I would have to agree that the cups aren’t a priority and I defiantly won’t qualify for europe because I know you can’t afford to invest in strengthening the squad and fear another relegation battle. I don’t mind you selling our best players for a profit. I’m happy with a free transfer in the summer. I’m happy to work along side Graham Carr and Lee Charnley. I’m a cheaper attack minded manager like Alan Pardew.

And then there’s the disingenuous remarks about admiring the man … before going on to say he is a lying ******* and that he, the writer, was vilified for speaking the truth.

All in all, the sort of journalism that is lapped up by media junkies as being “thoughtful”, probably because it gives their own opinions the fix they need.

      (Quote)

  35. I just saw Keegan interviewed by Keys and Gray and they asked what he could tell them about Ashley and the Newcastle situation. He basically told them he had no idea as nobody could predict the Fat Man.

They asked about Newcastle’s trophyless run and he mentioned the Fairs Cup and said it was introduced to promote cities that had trade fairs and that you didn’t even have to qualify when NUFC won. NUFC finished 9th the season that they entered and won and you didn’t have to qualify until the next year if I read wikipedia right. They beat Ujpest (who they?) in the final. People say we haven’t won a major trophy since 1969 but was it really a major trophy when it was on the back of promoting trade fairs? The year after you had to qualify I think, when it turned into the “second place” cup and then the EUFA cup.

I got this from what Keegan said and then looked it up on wikipedia. Please someone correct me if I am wrong on any of these details because when we talk about the trophy drought I am not sure if the Fairs Cup really counts and we should be talking 60 years of hurt instead? It was European competition but started as glorified friendlies and was it much more until you had to qualify? I don’t know the answer and wonder if anybody else does?

      (Quote)

  36. By the way, it was Keegan that brought up the Fairs Cup and he was the one that was intimating it wasn’t a real/major Trophy. It had nothing to do with Keys and Gray, they just listened.

      (Quote)

  37. It was called The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. When we won it we had to qualify, although it was a bit of fluke that we did so. We qualified due to our position in the first division, however, only one team per city was allowed to enter. I can’t remember in particular but I think there were a few London clubs above us, and Manchester and Liverpool. I think we were also sweating on who won the cup. And I recall us being 10th.

It was considered the third European trophy behind the European Cup and the Cup Winners Cup.

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if there was a move to demote that win in value by doomsayers who want yet more material to clout the club they supposedly support. But that sort of negativity is probably Ashley’s fault; individuals can’t possibly be held responsible for their own thoughts.

      (Quote)

  38. BrisV: I think Keegan just said the stuff I mentioned as a matter of fact. I had never even considered the history of the Fairs Cup until I heard Keegan talk about it tonight.

The Telegraph article is an opinion piece, not reporting on a particular new piece of breaking news. Not sure whether you’re aware, Bris but journalists are allowed to right opinion pieces. You don’t have to agree with it, that’s fine. Some people will agree with it though so you don’t have to belittle some supporters by telling them that articles you don’t agree with are just giving them a ‘fix’ because they happen to agree with it.

Let’s be honest, if journalist only wrote positive things about NUFC, not only would I think they weren’t very good at their job, I would be surprised if every day there wasn’t a blank space where their NUFC pice should have been.

  46. Bris – thank you mate!. God bless you, Aussie and Newkie it seems for having some common sense.

Stu – I obviously agree with Bris in the unbalanced opinion article that you’ve posted. It’s an opinion article, but a very bias one and nothing highlights that more than this:

“The reason the majority of supporters turned against him several months ago had nothing to do with the local media and the hostility caused by the club banning newspapers – including this one. It had absolutely nothing to do with where he was from, or even owner Mike Ashley”.

Of course the reason the fans turned against him had nothing to do with the media ban!! – why would it?!. 1) Pardew didn’t put the ban in place and 2) we are football fans, not media fans!!.
The reason some fans turned on him was coz the football at times was absolutely horrendous. Add to that his **** craic and defence of Ashley and there’s your reasons.
The only reason Edwards put that paragraph in was so he could add the line – including this one.

  54. Any team not in the CL is going to lose their players to CL teams, who have stupid amounts of money. Nobody is banging on about Liverpool or Spurs as selling clubs, everybody just gets at our club. I of course would like a bit more investment, but we are not the only selling club out there. Mascarano, Alonso, Suarez, Bale and a lot more have left, look how many have left Arsenal. And they have regular CL. Players, if they are good enough, want more. We haven’t got the money to really push regular CL, look at Liverpool now. But, with the right coach, we could challenge every now and again, like spurs may this season. Chelsea, Man city, and, I guess, Man U again soon, will be nailed on.

It we have a decent coach, play decent football and bring more players through the club, I will be well happy. That should be then the normal ups and downs of a club, that’s what we are aiming at. Christ, we are not a CL club owned by a nation state or a billionaire oil tycoon. But, we are getting more home grown players, and quite a few Geordies in and around the team. That’s a real club. A decent ‘coach’ would help bring that out.

Carroll went for silly money, and hasn’t done much since.
Ba for sure wanted out, and so did Cabaye. Look at both of them now. They and we would have been better if they’d stayed they chose to leave. You can’t keep blaming the club. We are not a ridiculous selling club.

What we need is a coach that generally has a system of playing decent football, no matter the players we have, and then I for one, will enjoying supporting us.

I always said Pardew should be sacked if he used Cabaye’s departure as an excuse to play route 1 ***** football. He did, he should have been. Even though, I almost respect Ashley for not getting rid. Pardew is a con man. He’s gone.

There are scales of selling clubs, with maybe only Real and Barca exempt. We aren’t that bad. We just need a decent coach and philosophy, a few decent players and some young local lads coming through, and a new state of the art training facility. A club worth supporting.

Ashley, may just have lucked out, if he gets this next decision right, we are set up to be a solid top 6-8 team, with the occasional push for the top 4. I’d take that. That’s football, it’s not all about the ******’ CL.

      (Quote)

  55. Actually if you read the article it does say that Pardew was indeed quite influential on the banning of newspapers. His name was on the letter the club sent!!!

But what is more bizarre is that the majority on here have been slagging Pardew off for the last 18 months – is that negative? Why is it that supporters can be negative but not articles? Surely the journalists only see the same things as the supporters?

      (Quote)

  56. Terry – happy birthday buddy, have a great day. I hope we get a result for you but I don’t see it im afraid. I think Chelsea loosing to Spuds last week coupled with us being the ones that ended their unbeaten run will have them fired right up today like.

Oblong – I’d go with that line up mate, but I’d personally swap Armstrong with Cabella. Chelsea are quite a physical side and I think Armaz would battle up there better than Cabella – bring Cabellas pace on later in the game.
