Unfair-Lee treated?

After the announcement that John Carver was to be our caretaker manager until the seasons end, to be honest my first reaction was. Well at least a decision has finally been made! As underwhelming as the decision to stick with Carver is, it does however indicate that we have found our (unknown) man to take us forward next season. There is some fear that if Carver does really well, he will be kept on full time next season but I don’t think that is the case here.

A man to be trusted?
A man to be trusted?

Lee Charnley has not been in the hot seat long and he has a tough task to win back some trust from the clubs fan base. His predecessor Derek Llambias came across as a very astute financially sound business man but conversely, a really unlikable character with a cold disdain for the clubs fans .  He took gambles with player sales and held a tight leash on finances and over time his relationship with the fans descended into a seemingly hate/hate affair. There were no tears when Llambias announced his departure but there was some degree of skepticism when Lee Charnley was promoted from within the ranks of power. No one really seems to know much about the guy and he really hasn’t done much to improve this situation with the fans. However throughout his first transfer window I thought he did a good job of bringing players in and trying to get deals over the line. It was actually nice to see that we held off on letting Debuchy go until we had indeed sign cover for him. Maybe mistakes of the past were being heeded? Unfortunately we were still the missing a striker and the replacement for Mbiwa but I do believe that we were working on deals that could not be completed in time. Maybe if we were a little more relaxed with our purse strings it would not have happened, who knows? It would be hard to believe that transfer negotiations were a simple affair. These are still two areas of real concern and hopefully Lee can finally get it right.  This transfer window has been thrown into turmoil with the departure of Pardew and looks like being another fizzer. It is almost like torture as we wait for the striker and centre back we need and unfortunately I can see the torture continuing.

As far as Pardews replacement goes, I think we have got someone pre-signed and ready to go next season. I think Charnley knows how important this is and I reckon he will be doing his damnedest to get it right. Given the tight restraints that he has to work with, I think he is doing a good job and seems to be making the right noises. Charnley has really taken on a poisoned chalice of a role with in the club and it can’t be easy for him to operate under Ashley’s tough finacial model. But if he has his heart in the right place and tries the best he can to drive the club forward and bring back some exciting times then I am willing to cut him a little slack when things don’t turn out as they should. The new manager appointment will go a long way to see if my faith in him is right or misguided.

  1. I thought our fans were outstanding today mind. Never stopped singing and was laughing at the ‘olas’.
Great to see Dummett in amongst them and the players and JC acknowledging them at the end.

  2. Big win for our confidence. A couple of changes once players get back to fitness.
Still would like to see a commanding centre back and a goal poacher to come in by Monday night

  3. Pleased with the win but not getting carried away. Hull had some bad luck and on another day could easily have scored three. I was not impressed with either Colback or Siissoko and would have brought on Abeid for one of them earlier. Apart from Anita the passing from the others was poor. Still three points very welcome.

  4. Hull are **** but at least they have ambition and the owner is not getting free advertising. . They don’t know how lucky they actually are!

  5. Thought they more than matched us first 20 mins, as always the first goal in such a tense game makes a difference.

  6. And now Gateshead winning, Man, can this day get any better?

I should have bought a lotto ticket.

  7. Bris@384, what do you love about it mate ? 😉 you and your henchman, a couple of wind up merchants ? 🙂

Did you watch the match today ?
Do you think it was a good game ?
Are you still drunk after your triple wammy this weekend ? 😆 😆 😆

  8. Bris….I thought it was a really poor quality game, two bad sides, but we scored two fantastic goals to shade the game.
Thought our decision making in the final third was really poor at times. Still not complaining at the 3 points, 3 points closer to safety. Didn’t see too much in our play to impress me if the truth be known. I thought both teams were technically and tempo wise very poor.

  9. I love that the doom merchant hysterics are silent.
I love that the wind up merchants can’t handle some of their own medicine.
    Yes, I saw the game.
No, it was *****. Two teams battling away at a similar level of incompetence.
Yes. Drunk as a judge. Pissed as a fart. Happy as Larry.

  10. excellent result, a good performance that was enough to get us the win. Technically we were the better side throughout. Lets not forget we were the away team so getting settled for the first 20mins was to be expected. Some expected us to lose this one so 3-0 is a cracker.

Was Dummett in the away end?

      (Quote)

  11. @Bris. I’d say we’re better than Hull. That ain’t saying much like 😆 but with a few players coming back we should be fine and stay away from the relegation battle.

  12. Congratulations to big JC, one of the west ends finest sons…
We got rid of Pardew, it’s great to have a geordie in charge. One day we will have a team full of geordies, and as a manager. well be like that italian team where everyone is a basque and you can’t play unless youre a geordie
    in jc we TRust…

  13. Gashley…yeah Dummet was in the stands with his mates. There are no complimentary tickets for the players any more :-)…he probably paid to get in.. 😆 😆

  14. No such thing as a poor performance when you take 3 points on the road, especially against a desperate team in atrocious weather conditions. Well done Carvers

  15. Frankly, MM, Premier League games aren’t usually of a high quality, in general. And frankly again, I’ve long since given up on seeing quality in a football match; it’s the tension and competition and, well, ok, ok, those little moments of skill that I love. Mainly, competitive play entertains me, not technically good football.

I like two teams having a go at each other, regardless of the level of skill. I can enjoy the local under 15s game as much as a PL game.

  16. Great game Vurnon Anita, more of the same please, just prove me wrong. Great win, pleased for JC.

  17. Anita was very good today as was Haidara too, but man oh man what a player we have in Perez, he runs and runs and runs and his touch is sublime. Cabella got better as the game wore on, he’s finding his feet with every game he plays, and starting to learn he won’t have the luxury of time on the ball he’s used to. Colback did well, even Willo did ok, but Colo had a bit of a mare second half, he turns to **** when paired with Willo .

      (Quote)

  18. Bris@396, I hear where you’re coming from. Whereas you have given up on expecting quality, it does happen, despite the speed of the modern game. We have a few inconsistent and frustrating footballers in the toon line up, with the rest made up of workhorses.
Cabella’s nutmeg on the right side in the second half was sublime, and got me out of my seat. Ditto 2 of the 3 toon goals. Then the same players give the ball away in the most simplest of situations and you think wtf !! Unfortunately they don’t seem to learn…
I thought Anita was average today doing what he does best, creating nothing passing the ball back to his centre halves. Made a great goal line clearence to get Collo out of the **** in the secon half.. Colback poor today, seemed to have a hump on for some reason…

  19. AOD@370 Happy Birthday for tomorrow mate. Just realised we play Villa on my birthday and given I hate them ,even more reason for wanting a win.

  20. Kim @ 410 I am not 1 of Sammy’s biggest fans but he grafted well and what a goal 😉
As I said during the game Cabs was a good goal and I hope he has turned a corner now, and we can start to see the real player now

  21. Hopefully that nips it in the bud about us being relegated; Knickerless on soccer saturday trying to whip up a fuss bellend

Pardews downward spiral kicking into gear was a nice touch to boot, Looking forward to MOTD for a change

  22. 4th game on MotD 🙁
We definitely had Lady Luck on our side today for a change.
Made up for having the worst PL ref. Really ****.
So we rode our luck, got away with **** poor defending in our own box, and took our chances nicely for a change.
Well done JC and all the Lads.
3 Points towards safety, onwards and hmmmm ❗ tenth is looking achievable with a few more results like that.
    Howay the Lads

  23. Mds haidara was good mate and managed to get some quality balls in. Think we should replace will with dummet whenever possible. As for Anita, he did get better, but that wasn’t exactly difficult! I just don’t think his slsideways passing warrants a place in the side. Then the one time he shoots he misses Perez who was in a great position. He might benefit us if we were a side who dominate possession but we don’t, and he doesn’t have the physicality to block, catch or challenge the opposition and impose himself like abeid or tiote.

      (Quote)

  24. Our defending of free kicks into our penalty area is becoming a nightmare.
Its like a free unchallenged header everytime. 👿
Its going to cost us badly one day, probably next week versus Stoke.
Its a major worry and yet never gets addressed.

      (Quote)

  25. Agree but I thought Anita broke quite a few plays today which is something he hasn’t done later. But yeah he needs to look forward more often. Hopefully Abeid’s in next week anyway

      (Quote)

  26. Newkie I agree with you re Anita he was shocking 1st half so IMO he couldn’t get any worse, for me he isn’t and never has been good enough.

      (Quote)

  27. This should be a good confidence booster for JC and the squad.
But I really don’t like how we are still trying to use the horrible 4-2-3-1 formation.
We are just not doing it right at all. The 3 mids are not getting up quickly enough to support the loan striker, so it looks more like 4-5-.-.-.-1

      (Quote)

  28. Good win. Two excellent goals and a softie at the end. The counterattack strategy worked well against a hopeless Hull. The first half was a horror. Neither team could make 2 passes without turning it over. Bruce will be looking for work in the summer I would think.

  29. Just intercepted phone call from JC to Ashley:
JC: Hello Mike? Just thought I’d phone and tell you we won today.
    Mike: Who is this?
JC: It’s me, your new head coach John Carver Mike.
Mike: Get off the line you idiot! I’m waiting for some important news about Rangers!

      (Quote)

  30. were all 3 goals shot from outside the box ❓
Individual efforts, but shows we are still not creating anything of note for Perez.

      (Quote)

  31. Just think Mrs. Doubtfire could join our coaching staff!!! I’m sure we could afford him if Mike sells a few more players. 😯

      (Quote)

  32. I had to laugh when they tried to play something like 4-2-4 in the second half. They were already losing the midfield battle. The change just gave it away completely. Good thinking Brucie! 😆

      (Quote)

  33. Dave, Yeah mate, we are likely not even gonna try for him now, you know Jabba won’t get into a bidding war or better any wage offer, so can’t see it happening tbh. Nice if it does but won’t hold me breath.

      (Quote)

  34. Kim I would agree there, but I still dont know if we were even in for him, I did ask Sharpy where his info was from but he must have missed it

      (Quote)

  35. Dave, MK Dons stated we were interested in him and were expecting an offer. Whether it actually materialised, your guess is as good as mine, reports were we offered £4-5m plus a loan back, but never seen owt official .

      (Quote)

  36. MDS yeah he did get into it, just dont think it will ever be enough. Agree Dave, tbh I don’t think he’s a bad footballer just never should have been bought, don’t think he suits the league at all. Who plays with a midget in the holding role successfully over here?

      (Quote)

  37. Newkie I agree he’s not a bad player but just not suited to our league.
Kim is that not just the standard stuff too increase the price from a club that has to offload a player ?

      (Quote)

  38. Hopefully, John Carver will consider put Sammy upfront and Ayoze to play on the wing, Sammy could be huge at this position, he can allow us to put less pressure on Ayoze and that could make us even better

      (Quote)

  39. C A Sall

Ayoze is a far more natural CF than Sammy. Feed the lad balls and he hits the target. Natural striker with loads of potential

      (Quote)

  40. Can’t wait to see who we’ll spend the mbiwa dosh on 😆

Couple of grumbles from y’day. My two men of the match yesterday, Anita and Cabella are both guilty of occasional poor passing. Anita often plays hopeless longballs that drift out of play & his short balls go behind the player, slowing the play. Cabella is guilty of the hospital pass, too short or not accurate. He did this a couple of times y’day leading to 50/50 challenges.
My only other gripe is the needless freekicks Sammy gives away, a bit like his bro in that aspect.

But all in all, very happy with the win. 😀

      (Quote)

  41. Happy with the win. We got all the breaks but that’s the way it goes sometimes. It may sound contradictory but I am happy for Carver. He wears his heart on his sleave and despite his rant at Southampton he seems to genuinely care. The fact that I think he is ugly and under qualified doesnt mean I don’t wish him success. Robson saw something in him but he is also culpable with Pardew for the awful football over the past year. I think that is why 90 per cent of fans were disappointed with him being given the job even when it felt like it was inevitable. It could be worse, it could be Bruce or His Royal Smugness could still he here.

      (Quote)

  42. Gashley – It’s as clear as crystal mate. I have never doubted Carver would get the job. He doesn’t want to have anything to do with transfers, won’t complain at what he is given or what is sold, he won’t say anything wrong in public and will be so happy to have the job he will come very, very cheap! Let’s not forget, he only needs to finish mid table and that will be fine with Jabba.

      (Quote)

  43. @Stu. like I said, its a bit early a call. Theres no guarantee he’ll get mid-table next season going off one win against a very poor Hull

    . I’m confident we’ll a manager in the summer.

  44. I certainly wouldn’t swap Perez with Sammy but I defo think Perez has the skill set to play either side or up top in a front three. He has pace, strength and the skill to beat people and by the looks of things he can deliver balls into the box.

The most important thing is to make sure he plays 90mins as much as possible, and if our best side/best chance of winning is perez and someone else playing off Cisse for example I would be happy with that.
