Would you have Joey Barton back?

Would you have me back ?
Would you have me back ?
Over the course of the last few seasons one thing has stood out to me when looking at our squad – a lack of leaders. We have not had a genuine leader since, well…Joey Barton. Back then we had Kevin Nolan too.

Teams need individuals in the dressing room that are not afraid to say it as it is. Ruffle feathers and all out the mercenaries. It’s been a common theme for a while now, our fans have pretty much been united in demanding one simple thing from our players; effort.

When your team is made up largely of foreign nationals, they will have no particular loyalty to your club. They are after 2 things; more money or trophies. Where is the incentive to work their balls off for the club badge? This is where strong leadership comes in. Your Roy Keane’s, Joey Barton’s and Steven Gerrard’s will not stand idly by and allow their teammates to take the mickey out of the fans and team.

Joey is 32 now, but can still do a job in the Premier League and he has often spoken bout his admiration for our fans – even if he rightly does not like the board. Colloccini is a good player, but lets not kid ourselves. He does not love Newcastle United and does not take his teammates by the scruff on the neck when they are not performing on the pitch. Cabaye was a previous Captain of our club. Good player, but not a Captain. There is nobody in our squad that fits the leadership profile and in my opinion that is one of the biggest reasons for the club constantly underperforming.

Joey is available on a free this summer and considering what he will bring to the dressing room, even at this stage of his career – he has to be a safe investment. Granted QPR have not shown too much passion this year – but the club is infested with mercenaries and players well past their sell-by-date. Even Joey can’t be expected to work his magic with that lot..

Even if Joey was simply a squad player, he would still be letting rip in the dressing room and creating a strong work ethic and the team bond that always results from everybody pulling in the same direction and working their socks off for eachother. I reckon he’d jump at the chance to sign on with again at this stage of his career and I think the dressing room would benefit massively from it, even if he is a controversial figure with a chequered history. At least he has passion – something our fans are crying out for. What do you reckon?

  1. I like wor Joey. I say bring him and Andy Carroll back! Sorted 😎
It always surprised me that Liverpool took Andy without also taking Joey as Joey was the reason Andy got to score! I’d have Joey back in a heartbeat 😀

  2. I particularly like Joey’s display of leadership when Pardew asked Cabaye to take the corners during a practice match not long after he was signed. Joey spat the dummy and as a result Pardew sent him back to train with the reserves! 😆
and some people want this clown back!!

  3. Okay okay, I got it! I abhor his violence but like his sexy french accent 😉
He is always entertaining to watch whether saint or sinner and has passion and plays a bit of footie now and again. I like the fact that he tries to be a good lad even if he doesn’t succeed. Giving up drinking probably helped a lot. Maybe as a woman I see him as a bit of a ‘fixer upper’. With the right people in his life he could become and is becoming a very good man. I think his heart is in the right place but he is still trying to overcome his upbringing and hard start in life. Give him another chance 😀

  4. Joey Barton back?? 😯 😆
I was glad when he left. Was never excellent. Is really slow now & would not improve our midfield one bit.

Stick to your evening job Joey, defo a better art critic than a footballer

  5. I loved the french accent as well… it had a nice Scouser/Parisian blend that was very cosmopolitan! 😆

  12. A quick goodle search brings up the following. I hope i am not flogging a dead horse here, or have you all not heard of that phrase either?

“A “loaded question”, like a loaded gun, is a dangerous thing. A loaded question is a question with a false or questionable presupposition, and it is “loaded” with that presumption. The question “Have you stopped beating your wife?” presupposes that you have beaten your wife prior to its asking, as well as that you have a wife. If you are unmarried, or have never beaten your wife, then the question is loaded.

Since this example is a yes/no question, there are only the following two direct answers:

“Yes, I have stopped beating my wife”, which entails “I was beating my wife.”
“No, I haven’t stopped beating my wife”, which entails “I am still beating my wife.”
Thus, either direct answer entails that you have beaten your wife, which is, therefore, a presupposition of the question.”

  13. Listened to an interview with Koeman last night. He’s happy at the Saints and says it’s like a big happy family (just like the Toon then). He’s relaxed about buying and selling players every season – says it’s normal. The best players want to move up – it’s normal. Nice guy.

  17. Georgio – he’s right mate, ambitious players want to move forward and reap the rewards – whether that me trophies, awards or wages.
I have no issues with players wanting to leave us for CL clubs, but what isn’t acceptable is playing wanting to leave because our club isn’t ambitious enough, or they don’t feel they are being tested enough or developed. That’s totally down to the club & Ashleys approach to it – and it will be why summer targets will choose clubs like Saints & Swansea over us.

      (Quote)

  23. Sharpy – Has to be Perez surely? Can’t be anyone else for me like, Jan and Colback get an honourable mention but he has been the good thing about this terrible season.

      (Quote)

  24. Sharpy for me I would go for Janmaat or Colback with Perez a close 3rd simply because he hasn’t scored enough and for me thats what his main job is 😕

      (Quote)

  25. janmaat would get my vote, followed by perez as the younger player of the year….

      (Quote)

  26. On topic, this will absolutely never happen for the number of reasons highlighted above. However, I would definitely have Joey back in the squad because he has a range of passing and a set piece ability that we sorely lack. His competition for these would be Ryan Taylor, and he was a far better player than Raylor even before Raylor got crocked. Twice.

He has a big mouth and bigger ego but to be honest any half decent manager seems able to get good football out of him. In an ideal world we wouldn’t even be discussing it, as this shows how far backwards we have gone, but beggars can’t be chosers and I would take him.

  27. Troysta: I said I had made remarks about some things to you and you had not said anything back like you used to do whenever anybody said a word to you WTGGTTRA.

  28. Dave – Perez’s job is to score goals or help the team create goals, he has done well on both accounts as he has been surrounded by a complete joke of a forward line. For me, where he has had a bad game it’s because of a complete lack of service from those around him, I don’t think he’s missed any big chances or made any decisions that have really cost us.

Jan has been equally good, equally let down by those around him, but I think he’s also had a few games where big mistakes have cost us.

Colback has done better than anticipated, he’s tried hard and grabbed a few goals, but wouldn’t say he’s been player of the season.

      (Quote)

  29. Dave – that would be 1,2,3 as well. But I’m with Newkie and Perez would get my vote. A 21yr old lad bought for around £1.5m who should have been eased into life in a new Country and a jump from the Spanish second division to the PL. Instead the lad has played 35 of our 36 games so far. He’s only managed 7 goals, but if you take into consideration what I’ve just said, and add to that the fact he’s played most of the season as a lone forward in a horrible season for NUFC – I think the lad has performed fantastically well. 2nd for me would be Janmaat, which is a little harsh on Colback. But I just think Janmaat had a greater challenge this season in a new Country & new better league.

Flop of the season – Chucky (I dare you to argue that one 😆 )

  30. I reckon Perez, Sammy, Aarons and a few more young uns would come along even better if the senior pros started pulling there weight. At the same time I’m sure ultimately that this battle with relegation will stand them in good stead in the future….
Young Perez didn’t need much “protecting” did he ? A young foreigner in a foreign place, new language to learn, away from home. That the lad is in the running for player of the season is an immense achievement…

      (Quote)

  31. Sharpster, in his defence Janmaat is a seasoned cloggy international, so we could expect him to hit the ground running somewhat.
Young Perez is a sensation which we haven’t seen for a long while.

Wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t win the EPL young player of the year, let alone the NUFC award…

      (Quote)

  32. Munich – fair point, and I’m sure having Krul, Anita & De Jong at the club would have helped him. So are you saying your 1,2,3 would be Perez, Colback and Janmaat?

      (Quote)

  33. Sharpy – young Aarons has broken all records by miles (7 months out with a hamstring!) 😛
Got to be Perez but he really needs to develop a little variety into his game. Tries the same dribble every time he gets the ball and it works less and less as everyone else gets it.

      (Quote)

  34. Georgio – I think he’d benefit having a decent CF alongside him, or being played on the left of a 3 up front. I think at 21 he has a lot to learn yet, but his work rate & attitude is outstanding I think.

      (Quote)

  35. Munich – Barton isn’t that good mate, it’s more a reflection of how ***** our squad is 😆

I think he would bring more to the team than players like Obertan, Ryan Taylor, Jonas, Williamson or Taylor, most of whom now seem to be starters.

agree @270 though, we all had big expectations of Janmaat and he has done his job there, so maybe that counts against him. Many people thought Perez would be a bench warmer, or someone for the future, but with the little I’d seen and heard I was hopefully he’d be getting a run out every week. He’s done more than that, he’s put more effort in than pretty much anyone else – done nothing stupid, and hasn’t moaned or anything. Model professional and more determination than pretty much our whole squad.

      (Quote)

  36. It’s the likes of Colback, Perez and Janmaat that we would need to build around next season. Thank God Kane is getting all the attention at Spura, or Perez would most likely be getting poached. THere’s not mucn of a ‘spine’ left at the club – Being optimistic mebbe Krul will stay, add Sissoko and De Jong, slot in Dummy and Haidara – 7-8 key players?

      (Quote)

  37. Newkie lad….here we go 🙂

Perez, Janmaat, Colback for me….. in that order…

Perez will make a dip in form next season and spend time on the bench…

Carver will be manager for the first 3 months of next season…

Charnley will ship out 6 players in the close season, and bring in 2 new signings and 2 loanees… Vukic and Aarons will both appear regularly in the first team at the toon…

..and all from the lofty heights of the EPL …

    There…said it… 😆

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy @ 241. Which views are you talking about in particular? I can’t say that I’ve noticed any change in my outlook towards NUFC and the general malaise at the club and on the field.

Maybe I’m now more inclined to be anti-Charnley than I used to be.

      (Quote)

  39. Newkie – that’s a stay up outlook – if we go down we’ll lost Janmaat, Sissoko, Krul, maybe not De Jong. Good side is players like Sammy, Darlow and Lascelles will look good in Champo 😎

      (Quote)

  40. Sharpy I hadn’t realised that the young lad had scored 7 😯 of the top of my head I would have said 3-4 so the lad has done well.

      (Quote)

  41. Bris – I’m not saying it should have done, just sometimes when you go into the belly of the beast it may be that some things can be worse or better than it looks from the outside.

Dave – aye 7 goals for his first season. Would be great if he could get that up to double figures in the next 2 games like.

      (Quote)

  42. Sharpy he might have a chance to bag a couple on sat as I expect the R’s to start of strong then fall apart badly with maybe 1 or 2 red cards being issued 😀 😉

      (Quote)

  43. 7 Prem goals for Ayoze? Wouldn’t have guessed that many. That’s a remarkable achievement for a 21 year old in his first season at this level while getting practically no support. What a find he was

      (Quote)

  44. Sharpy: It looks pretty much the same here as it does in Oz. But you see, I don’t read papers, so don’t get all frazzled. The best way to be kept in ignorance is to read newspapers – one of my favourites quotes goes something like: newspapers make the ignorant more ignorant and the crazies crazier. I can’t recall who said it.

Being at the match was very different to watching it on tv. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience (apart from sitting next to a Stuart clone), and was quite entertained by the game, although I saw a number of things about our play that doesn’t come across on telly quite so starkly – most notably how lightweight we are all over the park and how shallow the defence is.

So I guess yeah, my views have changed. I think we are worse than I thought before.

      (Quote)

  45. I think this is a genuine transfer. Reported by Marca, he has 12 appearances for Barvs this season with 8 goals for the B Team in 27 appearances. Good prospect. Not sure where the likes of Armstrong stand though..

      (Quote)

  46. More bollocks from Ashley. We don’t need a 19 year old with no Prem experience. We need a good senior striker (actually 2) who are ready to fight in the Prem. We need 2 experienced CB’s. We need decent wingers. The Ashley “method” is no method at all except don’t spend much. This squad would never come back up if relegated. Ashley out.

      (Quote)

  47. Bris – yeah we must be one of the smallest, least physical sides in the PL – which is fine if your style is to play the ball on the ground and move it round quickly, but we really don’t. Some height & strength in the summer would be good.

Shamrock – the lad had a couple of games in the first team when Suarez was suspended. He’s a big strong lad who seems to stick to playing the width of the box. He looked decent, but didn’t seem to fit the Barca way which is maybe why they are happy for him to go on loan – hopefully with an option to buy, but it wouldn’t surprise me if our lot don’t go with an option to buy agreement like.

      (Quote)

  48. I assume he comes in as a senior squad player, so Amstrong goes out in loan. That gives us Cisse, Perez and Sandro so 3 senior strikers. Room for a permanent signing, preferably English. Get Austin in and the forward line will not look too bad.

      (Quote)

  49. Sad stuff. I don’t think anything more needs to be said about Ashley. If you go to games you support the regime, simple as that. If you support the regime you’ll get more of the same next season.

      (Quote)

  50. Players dont have to be friends to make the team work. Ik sure that if we just had brought the Cabaye HBa Ba Janmaat or just those good type of foreign players, along with those who understood the club like Barton Nolam Carroll Saylor we would have an identity.
At the end Barton really was an underrated passer/crosser of the ball, he was committed, Id take him as rotation and let him create a strong leadership in dressing room with Janmaat Colback Dummett de Jong Abeid who I see as potentials mental leaders of this team. But all down to Ma for sure. And if Barton could come with Austin, that would be greaat for us really, this lacks of balls against average teams

      (Quote)

  51. Sharpy if he’s good enough to get game time in Barcas first team, he’s good enough for the Toon. I wonder if it’s a sweetner in a future potential deal for Perez to join Barca if he keeps developing so we’ll…

      (Quote)

  52. I don’t know any way of re-building a squad this poor when the management group is completely incompetent. It would take a huge effort from a brilliant football man now and we don’t have any of those at hand. Tinkering at the edges ain’t going to get it done Ashley. Sell the club this summer. Then somebody with a clue can come in and we will be able to hope for something better.

      (Quote)

  53. G2 I take it your not happy with Mike Ashley at the moment ?
His hired professional people in the past mate or have you forgotten ?
Dennis Wise and Joe Kinnear spring to mind. John Carver needs your support mate.

      (Quote)

  54. Shamrock – yeah it probably helped having Messi & Neymar either side of him like 😆 but still a daunting task for such a young lad. The Perez sweetener did cross my mind as well to be honest, but it’s never a bad idea to make friends with Barca I reckon.
