Inspirational punts verses steady hands.

Patrick_Vieira (1)Interesting events seem to be popping up around the new head coach position at Newcastle United. It would seem we are due to hold talks with a certain Patrick Vieira for his possible services!, yes you read right, I did say Patrick Vieira. Quite how he has come into the frame is anyones guess. They may well of been monitoring his progress at City with the reserves or just realised he could be an option what with his contract up in the summer. How ever you slice it, if true, it’s a bold move by the Newcastle board, but is it smart or foolhardy?

So let’s weigh up the pro’s and con’s of unknown quantities verses steady hands. When you employ a Maclaren, Pulis, Moyes or Allardyce you know exactly what you are getting; namely a guy to steady the ship with a possible decent cup run . That’s all fine and good but what if you want more than that? I mean can these guys gain regular top 6 or 5th finishes or better? well, probably not in truth, if they could do better they’d already be at the likes of Chelsea. In the case of Moyes, he had a shot at Man utd after steady work at Everton yet failed once in charge with apparently more talent and cash at his disposal . So is there a case for saying that younger untested managers in waiting or at lower division clubs are worth a punt. Apparently yes there is and the evidence is right in front of us.

Take a look at the final 6 placed teams in the championship this season and the top 5 are all young managers with the first 3 gaining their clubs promotion to the promise land of the Premier League. Bournemouths Eddie Howe at 37 years old and who’s only real top flight football as a player was two appearences for Portsmouth under Redknapp, has done an amazing job there. Then we have Watfords Slavisa Jokanovic at 46 years old and who played for Partizan Belgrade and Chelsea in the top flight and managed Partizan and Levski Sofia amongst others. Then of course there is Alex Neil of Norwich who is just 32 years old and come seemingly from no where. Actually he came down from Hamilton academical after great success getting them promoted to the Scottish Premier League last season. The day he left his players were in tears such was his standing as not just a coach but former player for them. The

Accies loss is Norwiches gain as he’s guided them via the playoffs to the Premier League.

Talking of playoffs, let’s look at Boro’s manager Aitor Karanka, ok his team fell at the final hurdle but what a marvalous job he’s done at the Boro. At 41 years old another up and coming manager who played most of his career at Bilbao and Real madrid. He did manage the Spanish u16 side and learn his trade next to Jose Mourinho at R. Madrid though to be fair. All the same these clubs have taken a punt or a brave decision on their new head coaches when the easy option would of been a steady Eddie.

So the question is do Newcastle go with a tried and trusted pair of hands or opt to go down the untried route like the afore mentioned clubs?

Derby have just sacked Steve Maclaren who has been heavily linked to the Newcastle post for months now in favour of an untried manager in Paul Clement, yet to be confirmed. Clement has a lot of experience, coaching at Chelsea Academy, Fulham Academy and was ROI U21 coach, Blackburn Rovers assistant coach ,PSG assistant coach and Real Madrid assistant coach alongside Ancelotti. Yet the guy never played beyond non league as a player! Should we infact be looking to employ someone like Clement rather than Steve Maclaren?

With Villa taking a chance on Tim Sherwood with some early success and Everton doing steady under Roberto Martinez, Swansea doing ok under Garry Monk and relegated QPR seemingly happy to show faith in Chris Ramsey to guide them back to the PL , shouldn’t we be giving a young progressive coach a chance?

I can understand a lot of fans wanting an established name, a safe pair of hands if you like but sometimes the unknown quantity can spring a pleasent surprise. Remember Kevin Keegan had no experience in management and look what happened there.

  1. I see internationals TAE. You are not getting my point. Answer my question at post 149 and i’ll come back to you later.

  2. Shamrock – to be fair mate, the super rich & elite teams around the world don’t really bring any young players through either. How many young uns have Barca or Madrid brought through into their first teams.

      (Quote)

  3. It’s very rare a team as good as City will bring young players through who are instantly good enough to get in that team! If it was that easy England would have a world class team!

  4. SHAMROCK
do understand what ya saying about the world class academy but ya seem to be missing my point the kid would have to be very special to break into 1 of the real heavey hitting teams

  5. Another day and Lee still hasn’t found a permanent replacement for Pardew. I suppose if we leave it late there will be less time to buy players etc.

  6. Apparently a lot of money being put on Patrick at the bookies, a lot of £20k bets put on 😯

  7. On the issue of City youngsters not breaking into the first team, I was listening to City fans on 606 a few weeks back moaning about this very issue.

defo worth another bid if they serious his goals would boot ya up the table a few places i bet

  10. Yeah I wouldn’t worry about you g players coming through City. Mangers aren’t likely to bleed youngsters when you’ve got a stacked squad trying to win the league.

20K bets, huh? That’s actually reassuring.

  11. It would only be reassuring if it was Vieira himself putting the bets on… I read Harry Redknapp’s autobiography and he told the tale of Ashley’s mate Paul Kemsley putting a **** load of cash on him to be the next NUFC manager. Kemsley called Harry to discuss it and when he told him he wasn’t taking it, Kemsley said “But you’ve got to take it, I’ve put a shed load of cash on you!”

  12. It’s nice the rumours about Viera, but it’s a toss up between McClaren and Carver.

Charnley wants to keep his own job, and Viera would shake him up big time…so…go for the old tried and tested grey version…. A grey man presiding over a grey club…

  13. Stuart79@172, congratulations mate, are you going anywhere nice stateside ? 😎

Do you happen to know whether the toon are going to the states on tour too this summer ? Could you post the link to back up your statement ?

  14. MM: I will definitely go to the match whoever is manager and whatever players we get. Milwaukee is an easy drive from Chicago. Miller Park has a retractable roof which might be cool to see if there is a storm, the temperatures get too high or the football gets too boring.

Wisconsin is the Dairy State and anybody who has ever watched NFL will have seen their strange inhabitants wearing giant plastic wedges of cheese on their heads. Between Chicago and Milwaukee is The Mars Cheese Castle. It is a massive cheese emporium with supposedly 1000 different varieties and the outside is built to look like a castle. I don’t know who the hell goes there, it sounds pretty boring to me.

Milwaukee is not a bad place for a couple of nights. They have street parties most summer weekends which livens up a rather boring downtown a bit. The Metropole is a good hotel to stay in if a bit pricey.

The good news is that most fans would fly into Chicago and there is much to do here.

  15. I wish I was still in the States – i love Milwaukee. That’ll be a great day and night. Enjoy Eric

  16. Eric Sykes@179, I would imagine the game is a must for all toon fans stateside….lucky you’s !
I was ecstatic a few years ago when the toon came to Munich…canny turn out too, a day never to be forgotten….

  17. As most people know, public transportation is pretty **** in the US but there will be numerous cheap and clean hotels nearby Miller Park and taxis are relatively cheap, even from downtown. It would be a good night out and they bring food and beer to your seats. They also have a race where 4 people dress up in giant foam sausage suits and run half a lap of the Park. I suppose it is to take your mind off the baseball 🙂

      (Quote)

  18. Eric, if memory serves there are daily trains between Chicago and Milwaukee that leave every two hours or so. About a 90 minute ride.

      (Quote)

  19. MDS: the train bit is easy, they run often from Chicago to Milwaukee. It is more about getting easy link ups. However, now that I think about it I am sure they have good public transportation to the baseball stadium for games, so I take my earlier statement back. I would rather stay downtown than out by Miller Park – it all looks like a big parking lot out there.

      (Quote)

  20. I’ll wait and see where else they are play ying before committing anywhere (I doubt they would fly all the way over here for one match). I’m actually switching jobs around that time and might be able to swing a week or two break to follow them around a bit

      (Quote)

  21. If there is one thing Americans do well it is sports stadiums. For those that haven’t been to one it will be a revelation after Craven Cottage or probably SJP. They have like 50 different food places that you can walk up to and will even deliver a menu to your seat. It is set up not just for the sport but for the experience. A lot of women go just because it is a night out even though they are not arsed about the teams.

      (Quote)

  22. The flight to Chicago is only 8 hours. If the idiots at NUFC were on top of things they could have arranged this a few months ago and let fans have a chance to make arrangements. Chicago and Milwaukee in the summer are great places to visit. Both have beaches on the lake that are almost like ocean beaches.

  25. When the toon came to Landsberg a couple of years ago to play Monaco I was talking to Krul and Steven Taylor on the pitch, I got my photo taken with all the players individually, it was a fantastic day. The security was absolutely gash and we could get reet close to the players before and after the game… Brilliant !…thanks to those great organisers NUFC…
Can’t imagine games in the states being that familiar … but most definitely brilliant crack…!

  26. MM: I saw Man U against FC Bayern a few years ago in Chicago. It was a great day out. Nobody causes trouble at sports games over here so you can sit anywhere. They will have a section for Toon fans in Milwaukee though and when I buy my ticket I will post on here where it is.

This is the first bit of good news for me on NUFC since we stayed up. Now lets get a manager and some players 🙂

      (Quote)

  27. No causes trouble at sports games? I take it you’ve never been to Philadelphia:)

Probably wouldnt fly all the way to Milwaukee for one match, but if they add another in Chicago or somewhere else in the Midwest i’ll head out for both. Unless they make a stop on the east cost

      (Quote)

  28. And MM: when Bayern played Man U here I got free tickets to a posh box from the Manchester tourist board (yes they have one) and they had a free draw for airline tickets and I won. A free trip for 2 to Manchester where I stayed 2 nights and then a week in Ireland. Happy days – maybe I will just get shitfaced in Milwaukee.

  29. Eric I lived in San Diego for 3 years, I know what the great sports stadiums have to offer…though baseball was my favourite…

  31. MDS: never been to Philly, but have been to over 100 Chicago Cubs games where everyone is out of their heads drunk on a sunny summer weekend. It is known as the biggest beergarden in Chicago and I have never seen any trouble.

  32. MM @197: you do pick them nice places to live. I don’t know if you have been back to San Diego but the downtown is very posh now. The climate, oh the climate. I was thinking of moving there a few years ago.

  33. Eric the northeast cities can be a bit rough for sports (obviously nothing like the old days in Europe). usually dozens of arrests for big NFL games. I’ve seen a ton of large fights over the years.

  36. I am not sure that Jonas and Taylor were released over the phone is news. We don’t have a manager and it was the worst kept “secret” that they would be leaving anyway (and their contracts expired, so they knew what was happening – what, they don’t have Agents?). Charnley has other things on his mind like taking 5 months to draw up a VERY short list.

  38. So no timescale been set on Vieira talks and he has interest from elsewhere. But McClaren is already preparing for his ingerbiew so it looks like he’s going to get it.

I’m quite depressed about that to be honest.

      (Quote)

  39. Why’s everyone bothered about the way the club told Jonas and Taylor they weren’t getting another contract? Is there a good way to find out you’re being released? Who cares whether it’s on the phone or face to face?

      (Quote)

  40. Stuart @208: we agree again 🙂 Time to get the manager sorted out and some decent centre backs in. I am still happy that I will be able to watch The Toon nearby in July.

  41. Eric Sykes@206, you don’t slumb it either do you… Hotel Del and La Jolla 🙂
I was last there in 2003, but by the then the Gaslamp district had been spruced up. When I was first there in 89 the downtown district was really dodge city with people sleeping out on the streets. It was a real no-go area… not as rough as the west end of the toon in the 70’s though 🙂

I lived in Pacific Beach during my time there, La Jolla, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach were all on my weekend cyle route…

  42. Scummy Hamburg have just scored in extra time to ensure they remain in the Bundesliga.. they equalised in the 92nd minute, and scored the winner in 115 minutes to defeat Karlsruhe.
Hamburg have never been in the 2nd division of the Bundesliga since it’s inception..
Hamburg won with Van Der Vaart and Lassogga in the line up. Not impressed at all with Lassogga, looks like we dodged a bullet there. The bloke is a big bull of a striker but can’t head the ball to save his life…

  43. Becoming clear its McClaren now. Most journo’s seem to have been briefed that if his interview goes well it’s his. Also Carr is the main man and he knows and likes McClaren.

Good luck selling this to the supporters. Doubt it will get them season tickets sold either…

Manners and professionalism. How to treat people who have given everything for you.The difference between the right way and wrong way to go about things. The very things that might persuade decent potential managers and players that they may be able to work alongside the current regime and not sidestep us till a better and more worthy potential employer shows an interest. Jesus wept. The shortcomings of our illustrious owner are what everyone has been rallying against for the last god knows how long, and now you couldn’t give a monkeys red **** about how a player who gave 7 yrs service of 100% effort, overcame cancer, fought his way back into the team after being disgracefully told to look elsewhere and then got the assist and goal in the last game to keep us in the top flight, has been told he’s lost his job by his mate being asked to ‘pass over the phone’?
People are bothered for very good reason.
Manners and humility. Things that are so free I’m amazed our owner isn’t overflowing with the stuff.

  49. The one watt light bulb Charnley must also realise that this choice of new head coach could also be the end of him too ? The new coach has a real difficult job on his hands, if he doesn’t get off to a great start he’ll have the fans on his back pdq.
Having said that, dealing in mediocracy and making woeful decisions hasn’t caused many casualties at the toon so far…why buck the trend..

  50. You Yew @217, it seems like Carver didn’t flinch when calling his mate Ryan Taylor to give him the news.
Is this a positive thing from Carver, out of respect for Raylor and Jonas, or was it a weak showing from Carver, in fact doing the dirty deeds for Charnley ?

  51. And Pardew said about a year and a half ago that NUFC could not compete with the financial resources of Southampton !!! A fantastic academy but no ferking history, tradition or fans. Their fans would walk away if they had a bad patch just like their neighbours at Pompey did.

Amazing that until he was sacked for underachieving at Championship Derby, his ‘vision’ for Newcastle was ‘I’m not interested’

I have managers I’d rather see than Vieira, but out of the two front runners if SM gets the job then all fears are confirmed for me, and the brief belief/hope that Ashley might have had a change of heart will be truly buried.
