Inspirational punts verses steady hands.

Patrick_Vieira (1)Interesting events seem to be popping up around the new head coach position at Newcastle United. It would seem we are due to hold talks with a certain Patrick Vieira for his possible services!, yes you read right, I did say Patrick Vieira. Quite how he has come into the frame is anyones guess. They may well of been monitoring his progress at City with the reserves or just realised he could be an option what with his contract up in the summer. How ever you slice it, if true, it’s a bold move by the Newcastle board, but is it smart or foolhardy?

So let’s weigh up the pro’s and con’s of unknown quantities verses steady hands. When you employ a Maclaren, Pulis, Moyes or Allardyce you know exactly what you are getting; namely a guy to steady the ship with a possible decent cup run . That’s all fine and good but what if you want more than that? I mean can these guys gain regular top 6 or 5th finishes or better? well, probably not in truth, if they could do better they’d already be at the likes of Chelsea. In the case of Moyes, he had a shot at Man utd after steady work at Everton yet failed once in charge with apparently more talent and cash at his disposal . So is there a case for saying that younger untested managers in waiting or at lower division clubs are worth a punt. Apparently yes there is and the evidence is right in front of us.

Take a look at the final 6 placed teams in the championship this season and the top 5 are all young managers with the first 3 gaining their clubs promotion to the promise land of the Premier League. Bournemouths Eddie Howe at 37 years old and who’s only real top flight football as a player was two appearences for Portsmouth under Redknapp, has done an amazing job there. Then we have Watfords Slavisa Jokanovic at 46 years old and who played for Partizan Belgrade and Chelsea in the top flight and managed Partizan and Levski Sofia amongst others. Then of course there is Alex Neil of Norwich who is just 32 years old and come seemingly from no where. Actually he came down from Hamilton academical after great success getting them promoted to the Scottish Premier League last season. The day he left his players were in tears such was his standing as not just a coach but former player for them. The

Accies loss is Norwiches gain as he’s guided them via the playoffs to the Premier League.

Talking of playoffs, let’s look at Boro’s manager Aitor Karanka, ok his team fell at the final hurdle but what a marvalous job he’s done at the Boro. At 41 years old another up and coming manager who played most of his career at Bilbao and Real madrid. He did manage the Spanish u16 side and learn his trade next to Jose Mourinho at R. Madrid though to be fair. All the same these clubs have taken a punt or a brave decision on their new head coaches when the easy option would of been a steady Eddie.

So the question is do Newcastle go with a tried and trusted pair of hands or opt to go down the untried route like the afore mentioned clubs?

Derby have just sacked Steve Maclaren who has been heavily linked to the Newcastle post for months now in favour of an untried manager in Paul Clement, yet to be confirmed. Clement has a lot of experience, coaching at Chelsea Academy, Fulham Academy and was ROI U21 coach, Blackburn Rovers assistant coach ,PSG assistant coach and Real Madrid assistant coach alongside Ancelotti. Yet the guy never played beyond non league as a player! Should we infact be looking to employ someone like Clement rather than Steve Maclaren?

With Villa taking a chance on Tim Sherwood with some early success and Everton doing steady under Roberto Martinez, Swansea doing ok under Garry Monk and relegated QPR seemingly happy to show faith in Chris Ramsey to guide them back to the PL , shouldn’t we be giving a young progressive coach a chance?

I can understand a lot of fans wanting an established name, a safe pair of hands if you like but sometimes the unknown quantity can spring a pleasent surprise. Remember Kevin Keegan had no experience in management and look what happened there.

Thoughts?

  1. Munich – The reason we will end up with McClaren is precisely because Charnley knows a wrong appointment could cost him his job. Vieira/Laudrup would be a risk but only because they could rock the boat with the way things are ran. McClaren won’t say a dickie bird and will give them what they require – PL safety!

  2. Viera was at a UEFA Licensing course this week, whereas McClaren was on a Powerpoint upgrade course.
    NUFC thinking big again…

I reckon of all of the numerous managers available, not many of them want to touch the basket case club……

  3. Me and Shamrock have both said on here in the past 2 days that we have sunk a long way if we are considering McClaren (sacked by Derby Fkin County) Vieira (Man C development coach who got his badges this week) and Carver (3 wins in 20) as the frontrunners. FFS, Charnley grow some balls.

  4. Stuart79@226, exactly mate, you picked up on my intimations perfectly. Well done.
The bloke is as risk averse as they come, with the aura of a bath sponge to boot … …

  5. Stuart79 100% agree with you 226. Pardew all over again style. Pull the wool over the fan’s eyes. Going around in circle’s hoping the fan’s are to gullible to notice.

  6. Eric Sykes@228, please see Stuart79’s clarifying summary @226.
This is Mr Charnley’s last shot at getting it right… he’ll be back selling lottery tickets with Wendy if he doesn’t watch out…

  7. Eric@228
    Agree about SM and JC.
Must say though, giving Vieira the job would be Charnley flashing some impressive testes in my book.
Some of the best modern coaches have been proven recently by someone taking the punt, most likely based on hearsay from respectable people who watch them work in their U21/Development capacity and have nothing but good things to say.
Like I said before, I have preferable if unlikely options, but out of what is being bandied about I’d take the punt on Vieira any day of the week.

  8. What was the point in mentioning 80 odd applicants if they wanted Steve all along. There are plenty of decent managers who would signal intent to strive for better than what’s gone. Maclaren is another Pardew, maybe slightly better but I don’t see top 7 finishes under him if I’m honest. And why bother speaking to Patrick if Carr is pushing for Steve? what a bloody mess going back to a guy who said no twice 🙄

  9. Graham Carr really must be some bloke if he can command so much clout at NUFC when he has a pretty lower than average CV in the game…
He must have more numbers in his little black book than Troy 🙂

      (Quote)

  10. MM: now that you mention Troysta, he never says who he wants or would prefer. Always out his mouth is “Pards is the best we can expect” or “Carver is inevitable” – never a proactive suggestion.

  11. They will struggle to sell this in a positive light to be honest. Personally I think this will set the relationship back even further as most supporters will just think once again “what’s the point?” Where’s the ambition ect… They’ll need one hell of a summer transfer window to get things positive again and even then I am not really sure that will make any difference. The club have a chance to show the supporters things are changing but I really fear they’ll revert right back to type and think “fck the fans” we want survival and that’s good enough. I doubt they will ever learn.

  12. But, at least “Schteve and the Toon” will be in the USA in 6 weeks. Sounds like a crappy band name from the 70s.

  13. Eric, wait till he starts talking to the French lads with a French accent, that’ll will totally freak them out 😀

  14. Club will be missing a huge opportunity to begin mending fences with supporters if they name McClaren. Surely Charnley sees that. Surely

  16. Munich mag all I’m trying to say is the board treat the fan’s as if their as thick as two short planks. So I hope they hold out on renewing their season tickets until proven otherwise. I have no faith in Lee or Ashley. Just another season full of excuses.

      (Quote)

  17. I am going to say this again – releasing Jonas and Taylor on the phone is no controversy. They knew they were gone and we don’t even have a manager. Do we even have an MD who can speak in sentences? I have never heard him talk – just press releases.

      (Quote)

  18. Lee’s still learning the rules of football. He still get’s confused thinking it’s rugby or netball.

      (Quote)

  19. This is what the telegraph said from Kimtoon’s post @251:

“Vieira is willing to talk to Newcastle’s managing director Lee Charnley, but wants to learn more about the club’s recruitment structure, and will only firm up his interest if he feels he will receive the financial backing.”

FFS Vieira is WILLING to talk to NUFC? He got his coaching badge last week. As Shamrock said, his Citeh “ELITE” development squad have not produced a single player for the 1st team in 4 years.

This man thinks he can dictate to NUFC. Grow some balls Charnley, grow some balls – Jonas has one more than you.

      (Quote)

  20. I agree, Eric. No big deal confirming to the players they ain’t getting a new deal.

      (Quote)

  21. I’m still waiting to see some ambition from the board. I’m actually getting very impatient them.

      (Quote)

  22. And taking about balls, here’s a story I didn’t want to hear and you might not either… but anyway…

My cousin was telling me about his 16 year old son who for some reason had one of his balls shrivel and disappear. Well, he was going into the hospital last week to get a prosthetic ball implanted.

I have never thought of balls of being that aesthetically pleasing to either sex that they would need replacing, it is not like boobs. The new rubber ball is not functional. What, his jeans won’t look right or something?

Sorry, the Jonas news got me thinking about this and why my cousin even told me in the first place.

      (Quote)

  23. Stuart: I did hear that Charnley will be arranging a strippagram for Taylor and Jonas though. “Good luck lads, ya sacked, f-off” will be the message.

  24. A SM appointment will surely boost season ticket sales 😆
He was sacked by Nottingham Forest and derby ffs so how comes he might find a cushy number at the toon?

There are loads of choices before SM

  25. Jonas has said on together that Colo never said the things to NUFC about him that they said he said. If that makes sense. The club is just a bit of a shambles really. So much bollocks…

      (Quote)

  26. A lot of this stuff about the phone call to Jonas and Colo not having said what was alleged may seem petty but it just all adds up – it is the Chinese Water Tourture of NUFC. It is something that shows they are not well run. NUFC are being run like a, well, erm, Tat Sports shop. I think Fatman is a great strategist when it comes down to business, but the details of his empire are left to others. It has worked in discount retailing, just liked it worked on the Quayside at the Sunday morning market. That just doesn’t translate to spoilt brat footballers and managers. Just look at who we ended up with as managers, MDs and coaches. It speaks volumes.

      (Quote)

  27. MM: When Man U came here they were league champions and half their fans had the green and gold scarves to signify “Glazers Out”. I always thought that was ironic having supported NUFC for all my life when we have won nothing (Fairs Cup was not a real Trophy when we won it). Now they are spending 60 mil for Di Maria and we are being outspent by Swans and Leicester. They call us deluded, but we know what we are and demand not much.

To add insult to even more insult, we have a 3 man shortlist for manager that seems to me to have 3 too many on it. 8th in the Championship and sacked, a novice with a brand new shiny coaching badge, and a man who managed us to 3 wins in 20. Who drew up this list? Oh, Charnley, another with absolutely no experience in his job.

    WE NEED ANOTHER LIST.

      (Quote)

  28. Wow, time to wake up and smell the coffee. ..I told you all that the SM deal was done in January and he will be bringing his support staff as well.. I am not happy or gloating about this…its just time to accept that SM is the man to take us forward…Apparently. .. ❓

      (Quote)

  29. I am going to say this again as well. Jonas knew his contract was running out and if his Agent wasn’t in negotiations then he knew he was leaving. Great stuff from Jonas on the last day and a great man, but whinging about getting a phone call that he was fired is being a bit harsh even on Carvs and Charnley.

  30. Eric… I heard it from a friend of a friend, who knew a bloke……

A friend of mine is a die hard Derby fan and he told me that his brother played a round of golf with Eric Steele (Derby GK coach) and he said that they had all agreed to join Newcastle next season, back in January. My friend is a stand up guy and he is pissed off that SM had his head turned and their season dropped away.
Things may have changed regarding this but as it stands I can’t see it being anyone other than SM…

“Aye go on mate, will it help me get the job?”
    “It won’t hurt your chance”
    “Anything, just name it”
“Have you still got Raylor and Jonas number?”

      (Quote)

  36. Sharpy, is it any worse than a player getting his agent to shop them around for a better deal while still contracted to a club?

      (Quote)

  37. Aussie – you could argue at least they told them in person rather than passing a message through a agent – not really a show of respect or gratitude either is it?!.
But to get Carver to make the call – the smiling assassination. You get on best with them John, you make the call – that’s the bit I have the problem with. According to Charnley the ‘head coach’ will have little input on the hiring, yet he’s happy for them to deliver the message when it comes to the firing.

      (Quote)

  38. I disagree mate, they are all as bad as each other… players kiss the badge one day and look for better deals the next.. I don’t hate the players for it, just like I don’t hate the regime for what has transpired with Jonas and Taylor.. The game in general is a cold ***** of a thing, that is driven by money…

      (Quote)

  39. Aussie – you could say that about players like Debuchy & Cabaye, Sissoko in the current set up I reckon. But I don’t see Raylor or Jonas as that type of player.

      (Quote)

  40. Football isn’t an honourable game so I don’t get the fuss about Jonas and Taylor. I agree with Aussie (I need to lie down) where’s the respect when agents are throwing their clients name all over the place for a better deal?

  43. BB what do you know about Vieira? I just couldn’t see Charnley’s pitch failing – “here’s the key to the executive washroom/toilet and of course you get to work with Carvs and Stoney. Me and Carr will give you a call from Marbella when we have a couple of players signed”.

  50. TAE – I think it’s wishful thinking on Sissokos part personally. I think Jose would rather bring Ruebens Cheek through the ranks than waste his money on Sissoko. If he’s so desperate to go, then sell him – I don’t think he was that **** hot this season anyway.
