Carver and Stone binned

These two oversaw a record 8 losses in a row
These two oversaw a record 8 losses in a row
Reports are being circulated amongst many respected news outlets this afternoon that Steve Stone and John Carver have been relieved of any responsibilities at Newcastle United. It is anticipated by the same outlets that Steve McLaren will be hired as our new manager/coach in the coming days. These sackings may just kick start a new era for our club.

So why is this news so significant? Well, for a long time now we have have had serious problems all over the pitch. From basic defensive positioning mistakes, set pieces being woeful at the back and when attacking, the team’s inability to string several passes together and keep the ball moving on the floor, lack of creativity moving forward and development players not making the step up. We fans have speculated for just as long when it comes to the source of these problems. Were Carr’s signings not up to scratch? Was Pardew a useless manager? Has the club’s hierarchy interfered too much with the playing side of things? Was it the coaches themselves?

Look in more detail and it can be strongly argued that the latter suggestion is the biggest indicator for our multiple and basic failures. We all know players on the Continent usually come with far greater technical skill than those brought up within the British schools of excellence. Holland, Spain and France are all known for producing players with sound passing movement and far less reliance on long ball than here in the UK. Bearing in mind that most of our purchases in recent years have been imported from these Countries, why is it that we still revert to ‘punt-and-hope’ so often and do not seem to understand the concept of ‘play it out from the back’? Is Carr really picking up duff after duff or is there more to it?

Maybe it was all Pardew. He had good technical players at his disposal, many of which were earning very positive reviews abroad before their arrival on the banks of the Tyne. He was the man running the show after all. It has to be said that he has to take some responsibility. He has the final say on how our side should be set out to play. However, his Palace side are a different animal since he joined them – employing far superior wing play and attacking zest than we have seen at this club for a long time. Maybe a workman really is only as good as his tools? Although many felt we were not meeting our full potential under his stewardship, he still had us comfortably in mid table when he left. That said, it is noted that Stone and Carver were hired after Pardew’s arrival at the club. If they were his men, then there is responsibility to be taken there.

So has the board interfered too much? Mike Ashley more or less admitted as much before our survival Sunday cash against West Ham. A policy of not competing in the Cups and not pushing for the Europa League is not going to motivate your players to push themselves to be the best that they can be. When you consider another policy has been to buy them young and talented before flogging them for profit, it is hardly a surprise that they will see the club as a shop window and not much else when they have nothing to aim for in terms of glory or silverware during their stay with us. Indeed, the board must take a big share of the blame – more than Pardew, who was operating with his hands tied behind his back. Add to the fact that the board chose to tie so many staff members to 8-year contracts and you can see how Pardew will have been powerless to remove any of the coaches if he recognised that they were not up to it after all. We do not know that Pardew ever recognised this or not, but if he had – what could he have really done about it?

Finally that leaves the coaches. Is it any coincidence that following Pardew’s departure the team’s form markedly nosedived? Carver may have been performing a different role as head coach, but the same coaches remained at the club with the same staff, yet results and performances were even worse than before. The same basic mistakes being made, but more often. John Carver has resided over the defensive and attacking set up at different points in the last few years and neither has looked particular impressive during those times. How can it be that such technical players turn into headless, indecisive chickens? The answer is simple. They are having the wrong messages drilled into them on the training pitch and that has led to incohesiveness on match days. Carver taking a step up has confirmed that he and other coaches have played a huge part in the dour football that we have subjected to for such a long time.

Their sacking is far more important that our next managerial appointment. The new manager will still have strict parameters to work to at this club. He will still have to use Carr’s men, but it looks like he will have the opportunity to bring in his own ‘tools’. Our set pieces in particular have been consistently amongst the worst in the league for a long time and it is hard to see how any new coaches could possibly have our side playing that badly. If McLaren does come in, we can expect coaches with more technical know how and a different playing style from the team. We should not expect miracles, but new coaches and new policies in terms of going for Cups should in theory breathe a new lease of life into the club and invigorate our players.

  1. Sissoko in the press again saying he wants to leave us after this season. Just get rid I say.

  2. Amazing news, it really shouldn’t have been in question after Carvers rant, the club must have been in full on toxic after that and there was no way he could have stayed. But credit to the club for actually making the correct decision. Not fussed on Schteve but looking forward to a fresh. All the best carver but you will never make it.

  4. Shamrock – get rid of the mouthy clown and get Leroy Fer in his place I say. Let Sissoko go rot on a bench of a club he’s not good enough to play for for a few seasons – then he can find his best option is Crystal Palace too 🙄 😆

  5. So Troysta thought Carver was a certain appointment. Shows what he knows. Him and Big D were cheerleaders for Tw@t Pardew. Shows what they know.

  6. Aussie, ‘re the McLaren golf course prophecy. Fair enough, you are now the blog soothsayer! 😀

On Sissoko. We are trying to make a fresh start and he is doing nothing to help the team spirit. His comments on McLaren were ridiculous. Get shot. Can’t believe he is so highly rated. He spent 3 quarters of the season moping around the pitch like a spoilt child dragging his feet. Really don’t have the time for people that can’t be bothered to graft.

  8. Eric must be the happiest man in the world today? Carver given his marching orders.

But who will you slag off now?

      (Quote)

  9. Have things changed too much though? Club said they will improve the communications but apparently McClaren will only be allowed to talk to a ‘certain few’ media outlets…

  10. Why is it taking so long to confirm SM,maybe its because club wanted to sack Carver and Stone first so it didn’t look like SM done it policital bollocks

      (Quote)

  11. It sounds like SM is only back from holiday today. Guess he needs a chance to unpack his suit case before he can be expected to start signing papers and doing press conferences!

  13. So West Spam talking to Remy! If anyone thinks improvement will be a easy process they should think again. Everyone else will have money to spend and won’t be scared of spending it unlike us.

    It’s going to be tough!

  14. Stuart@84: I wont slag off anybody. I am a NUFC fan through and through and have been for 40+ years. I just didn’t like Pardew and Carver and thought they were shyte managers.

      (Quote)

  15. Anyone thought of this?

Hopefully the manager brings in decent coaches just in case when in future the manager/head coach leaves, there is decent caretaker to take over. 😐 😯 😯

      (Quote)

  16. TAE: what is an “OPION”? Every time you wrote something you say “opion”. You act like Troysta except he has a brain.

      (Quote)

  17. There will NOT be a press conference to unveil SM
Only selected media partners will be invited to the unveiling having paid for the pleasure.
I assume that means only selected questions can also be asked.
Yet more bonkers from the clueless crew
    YCMIU 😉

im still waiting for you to answer the question i asked you a week or so back are you the same ERIC SYKES from the telly the dude that thought he was a comedian

  19. You really do have to be seriously stupid to spell opinion as “opion” every time. Not once, not twice, but about 1 hundred times.

      (Quote)

  20. TAE: I think the Eric Sykes from the telly is dead. I might change my name to Hatty Jakes, but she is probably dead as well.

  22. TAE: Alright man. You got me there. I give up – or should I say “this dude gives up”?

  24. Richie please forgive me but im on my phone so it means hitting the extra key 😉
Hows you anyway old bean ? You looking forward to Schteve taking over

      (Quote)

  25. How pathetically sad is it that the club will only allow sky sports and Mirror talk to McClaren? What’s just as bad is that McClaren hasn’t said to the club that he wants to talk to every media outlet.

    Not a good start

      (Quote)

  26. Dave…I’m fine mate, how’s you?

I’d have preferred someone a little more exciting but yeah I’m looking forward to the season starting again. It doesn’t really matter who takes over though if we don’t get the quality of player we need.

      (Quote)

  27. This blog is ridiculous at times. Half complain they don’t want McClaren, while the other half complain that the World media won’t get to ask him a question 😆

      (Quote)

  28. SHAMROCK
disappointed with that he was 1 i was hopeing we would bring in 🙁

      (Quote)

  29. What’s that got to do with anything, Sharpy? Whether people want him or not, he’s our new coach and I think people who wanted him, didn’t want him or are indifferent to him have a right to see the club being open and communicative.

      (Quote)

  30. STUART79
hes made the right call with our coachs maybe willing to give him a chance here meself, maybe hes not the nodding donkey i thought he was ganna be

      (Quote)

  31. Stu – would it matter if they did?! – you’d only find something else to pick fucking fault at.

      (Quote)

  32. McLaren being confirmed in next few hours. Bringing his own staff. I’m getting behind him and giving him time to settle in. We needed a shake up and we have it. Now let’s have some fresh blood in the playing squad, sell a couple of the mercenaries and watch performances slowly get better. It won’t happen overnight.

      (Quote)

  33. Guildetti & Richards both confirmed as released from Man City – I would take both of them like.

      (Quote)

  34. Richards would be excellent competition at right back. Depth we have not had for a long time.

      (Quote)

  35. KIM/DAVE wedding went really fab there was. 480 guests getting a drink off everyone was too much but I did give it a go needed a slush bucket like RICHIE there to cope, coming back to toon news soon sobers you up

      (Quote)

  36. Sharpy I think with all due respect you’re talking complete bollocks! You’ve linked two arguments that belong a million miles apart. What on earth has not wanting McClaren got to do with the club not allowing him to talk openly to all media outlets? The annoyance is with the club not McClaren.

    I do wish you’d think before typing…

      (Quote)

  37. SHARPY17
would take Guildetti would give richards a miss meself he comes they ganna try and play him at centre back

  38. Civil war in here today. It’s a good week. Carver and Stone gone. New manager and coaching team about to be confirmed. Happy days.

  39. SHARPY17
we need big beast cb with a bit of pace then we will be able to play on the front foot and not have to sit deep all the blooming time

      (Quote)

  40. Stu – of course they are polls apart – that was my point 😕 half don’t want him and the other half are complaining he’s not being unveiled properly – it may not quite be an extract 50/50 split I grant you but it’s still ironic.

      (Quote)

  41. Big D: I had never heard of “opion” before. I must be behind the times. You know, if I was picky about language and spelling I would have to correct myself.

      (Quote)

  42. Sharpy – Are you reading my comments? I don’t think you are to be honest as the beef isn’t with McClaren whether people want him or not. It’s with the club. Really don’t know what you have linked the two and made a fuss about it.

      (Quote)

  43. TAE – I’d play Richards CB as well mate. He is a beast – built like a tank but has the pace to go with it. I know you worry about his height, but to be fair Cannavaro and Mascherano are both shorter than Richards and it’s never held them back.

      (Quote)

  44. SHARPY17
also that high ball threat into our box has to be stoped, been killing us all season with that, so they need to be big enough to control the air space round our box

      (Quote)

  45. Stu – you’re so vain, I bet you think this blog is about you 😆
I think it is you that isn’t reading posts mate. As my post @116 was never directed at you – it was a generalisation. It was you that linked that post with yours 😉

      (Quote)

  46. Big D says @109:

“I here there wont be an unveiling press conference only selected media outlets, so much for the fresh start and the club being more open.”

Maybe I should conduct an English class on here, because I hear that the blog man doesn’t know the difference between here and hear?

      (Quote)

  47. Stu – I also wouldn’t class it as a fuss to be honest. I put a laughing fella at the end of the post – couldn’t make it any less fussy

      (Quote)

  48. Must be a hell of a pen McClaren is using to sign his contract as it’s taking him so long. Is he waiting for the fork lift truck to deliver it?

      (Quote)

  49. Richie @ 114 all good mate, and you are spot on mate, the sooner we start to strengthen the team the better.

Sharpy @ 116 so you dont find it a bit **** that the normal and local media arn’t allowed in to ask questions that the selected media wont ask ? did the club not promise us to be more open ?

      (Quote)

  50. Dave, it’s just a disgrace actually. No change and never will be. Supporters are just an inconvenience to the club.

Where’s this fans forum that was to be brought forward at the club’s request? Too many difficult questions for them to answer so they’ll just delay it and hope we all forget about their North Korea like control.

      (Quote)

  51. Dave – I couldn’t give a **** to be honest mate. They did promise to be more open – but the local rags aren’t the only way to do that. To be fair, the amount of ***** some of the media outlets write about Ashley & the club, I can’t say I blame them.
But I will repeat, I don’t care what beef they have with media, providing they are going in the right direction to improve things on the pitch.

      (Quote)

  52. Is Micah Richards any good? I keep seeing people say we should get him and on 80+k a week, but is he any good?

      (Quote)

  53. ERIC SYKES
hes a decent rightback but he aint no cb in my opion 😯 or should that be opinion 😆

      (Quote)

  54. Might be speculation but apparently Leeds Utd are lining up a 1.5 million bid for Willo 😐

      (Quote)

  55. Sharpy – The way they treat the media has an effect on the whole club and fans. It has a totally negative impact on the whole situation. The club bring it on themselves and have already put McClaren on the backs of with the media.

It’s not just this situation. It actuallys show the club isn’t changing and we can expect more of the same.

Oh and is be delighted to know how else the club are suppose to communicate with the supporters? 3 fans forum events a year? media is the only way clubs communicate and if you don’t think that makes any difference then you have been living on Mars for the last 8 years.

      (Quote)

  56. There’s also a pretty good reason why the huge clubs don’t charge for media access. I’m sure they could charge a lot more than us but they don’t. It’s because it causing friction between the key link between club and supporters – the media!

      (Quote)

  57. What a load of ***** that is, fancy no proper unveiling 😯 wtf is that **** all about. Nowt’s changed, still as guarded as ever and if it’s true that the press have paid for the privilege, then words fail me.
