Carver and Stone binned

These two oversaw a record 8 losses in a row
These two oversaw a record 8 losses in a row
Reports are being circulated amongst many respected news outlets this afternoon that Steve Stone and John Carver have been relieved of any responsibilities at Newcastle United. It is anticipated by the same outlets that Steve McLaren will be hired as our new manager/coach in the coming days. These sackings may just kick start a new era for our club.

So why is this news so significant? Well, for a long time now we have have had serious problems all over the pitch. From basic defensive positioning mistakes, set pieces being woeful at the back and when attacking, the team’s inability to string several passes together and keep the ball moving on the floor, lack of creativity moving forward and development players not making the step up. We fans have speculated for just as long when it comes to the source of these problems. Were Carr’s signings not up to scratch? Was Pardew a useless manager? Has the club’s hierarchy interfered too much with the playing side of things? Was it the coaches themselves?

Look in more detail and it can be strongly argued that the latter suggestion is the biggest indicator for our multiple and basic failures. We all know players on the Continent usually come with far greater technical skill than those brought up within the British schools of excellence. Holland, Spain and France are all known for producing players with sound passing movement and far less reliance on long ball than here in the UK. Bearing in mind that most of our purchases in recent years have been imported from these Countries, why is it that we still revert to ‘punt-and-hope’ so often and do not seem to understand the concept of ‘play it out from the back’? Is Carr really picking up duff after duff or is there more to it?

Maybe it was all Pardew. He had good technical players at his disposal, many of which were earning very positive reviews abroad before their arrival on the banks of the Tyne. He was the man running the show after all. It has to be said that he has to take some responsibility. He has the final say on how our side should be set out to play. However, his Palace side are a different animal since he joined them – employing far superior wing play and attacking zest than we have seen at this club for a long time. Maybe a workman really is only as good as his tools? Although many felt we were not meeting our full potential under his stewardship, he still had us comfortably in mid table when he left. That said, it is noted that Stone and Carver were hired after Pardew’s arrival at the club. If they were his men, then there is responsibility to be taken there.

So has the board interfered too much? Mike Ashley more or less admitted as much before our survival Sunday cash against West Ham. A policy of not competing in the Cups and not pushing for the Europa League is not going to motivate your players to push themselves to be the best that they can be. When you consider another policy has been to buy them young and talented before flogging them for profit, it is hardly a surprise that they will see the club as a shop window and not much else when they have nothing to aim for in terms of glory or silverware during their stay with us. Indeed, the board must take a big share of the blame – more than Pardew, who was operating with his hands tied behind his back. Add to the fact that the board chose to tie so many staff members to 8-year contracts and you can see how Pardew will have been powerless to remove any of the coaches if he recognised that they were not up to it after all. We do not know that Pardew ever recognised this or not, but if he had – what could he have really done about it?

Finally that leaves the coaches. Is it any coincidence that following Pardew’s departure the team’s form markedly nosedived? Carver may have been performing a different role as head coach, but the same coaches remained at the club with the same staff, yet results and performances were even worse than before. The same basic mistakes being made, but more often. John Carver has resided over the defensive and attacking set up at different points in the last few years and neither has looked particular impressive during those times. How can it be that such technical players turn into headless, indecisive chickens? The answer is simple. They are having the wrong messages drilled into them on the training pitch and that has led to incohesiveness on match days. Carver taking a step up has confirmed that he and other coaches have played a huge part in the dour football that we have subjected to for such a long time.

Their sacking is far more important that our next managerial appointment. The new manager will still have strict parameters to work to at this club. He will still have to use Carr’s men, but it looks like he will have the opportunity to bring in his own ‘tools’. Our set pieces in particular have been consistently amongst the worst in the league for a long time and it is hard to see how any new coaches could possibly have our side playing that badly. If McLaren does come in, we can expect coaches with more technical know how and a different playing style from the team. We should not expect miracles, but new coaches and new policies in terms of going for Cups should in theory breathe a new lease of life into the club and invigorate our players.

  1. According to press reports, we are going to get money for Williamson. Leeds – 1.5 mil? What???? I thought we would have to give them that amount and take the **** free kick routine with him.

  2. Terry @146: you beat me to it and I think I am as flambabergasted as you are as well mate.

  3. Stu – it will come as no surprise to you that I completely disagree. What it does is allows those fans who want to use it as a weapon against them to do so. It feeds the neggars and allows them to turn a situation into something it really isn’t. But fair play to them for sticking to their guns, because the media have done a great job of making sure the negativity lingered.
Of course the media is the best way to communicate with the masses, but they don’t have to depend on the existing outlets. They can develop the likes of NUFC.TV or improve their social media set up. Fans forums are generally for a select few anyway.
I don’t expect Charnley to be a town cryer every morning at the monument to be fair. But the fact Ashley has spoken to the media, the fact they sacked Carver & Stone – that’s evidence to me that they are changing for the better.

  4. Watching SSN now and I’m more than happy with the way it’s being unveiled to be fair.

  5. Sharpy: I don’t really get what you are on about talking about “neggars”. Realists, I would say. If you couldn’t spot that Carver and Stone were shyte you would have to have been a blind man with a mole as his guide mole (dog).

  6. Hitman @157: is that an option or an opion? or opinion? I am getting confused now.

  7. Eric – what are you talking about? Where did I mention anything about Carver or Stone not being *****?.

Stu – see they have learned. That would have been a straight 8yr contract once over 😆

  8. Schteve is in the bag. Win us a cup in your debut season and all will be forgiven. Might this Alsop signal a move away from our obsession with French players? Please say it does.

  9. He’s even been appointed to the board along with Moncur and Carr but this statement worries me; “”It was particularly important for us that the head coach also became a board member in order to gain a full understanding and appreciation for the Club and its operations as a whole, not just the football side. In Steve we have an individual who embraced that responsibility.”

That basically says he will now understand why we will sell him, him and him and won’t replace him with who you want or when you want it!

      (Quote)

  10. Sharpy: I mentioned that you said there were “neggars” and related that to the fact that it was rational to be negative about our coaches – I mean, it was not being negative at all, it was being realistic.

  11. so the worst kept secret in football is finally officially out in the open.
now we need to see actions in the transfer market.

  12. Does make me wonder, with Mclaren being appointed as a board member as well, is he going to take over as director of football at some point with another coach coming in. It means be a strange one for sacking him and giving him other things to worry about by sitting on the board. So I think yes do all the coaching etc for now, but in future he will be DoF and another Head Coach in place

  16. Eric – I’m talking about neggars who on the day we unveil our new manager/coach/chairman or whatever he’s been appointed as, manage to case negativity on it because the Daily Star doesn’t get to ask him a question. I’ve got no idea where you’ve got Carver or Stone from?!

  17. Are you in the House of Commons now? “I refer the honourable gentleman to the things I spoke before, like”. No problem man, just happy that Carver and Stone were sacked – if anybody deserved it,i t was that 2.

  18. Kim – I really don’t care. I’m not being arsey with you when I say that, I just really don’t. Its been we covered on SSN and local news.
I’m pleased we have got a new man in who I think will do a good job. I’m pleased we got rid of Carver & Stone and I now look forward to seeing which players we will sign – I don’t care if the Star or the Chronicle or whoever get their pound of flesh.

  20. Steve McClaren is a dyed in the wool football man, with international and national experience at the highest level. He has seen at first hand how things work at Old Trafford, throughout the England set-up, and also formed a great relationship with the Middlesbrough owner. He probably has a massive contact list worldwide…. I can’t believe he is just lucky getting so many chances, he must know something at the end of the day ? Time will show…

He’s here now anyway, I’ll get behind him, and look forward to seeing the improvements on the pitch… Hopefully we can bring in some much needed reinforcements to the team, to support the senior pros and young guns returning from injury….

      (Quote)

  21. Stuart @163,
Charnley is still in charge of the purse strings and transfers.
However, McClaren being appointed onto the board will no doubt allow him to have a major input on which players come and go but at the same time he will be very aware of the transfer budget.
It might take a couple of seasons and I think McClaren will end up with the players that he wants at the club.

      (Quote)

  22. Stu – McClaren being on the board could be a real stroke of genius from the club to be fan. We want better communication – we now have a board member in front of the press every single week. Bob Moncur is usually on radio shows & phone ins – now we get to ring a board member & speak to him on a live phone in.

      (Quote)

  23. Sidekick – it also allows him to move seemlessly into a DoF position when the time is right, or a younger coach is wanted.
I think it’s a positive move to plan for the long term future of the club personally.

      (Quote)

  24. Charnley realised that he is short on the footballing side, so has beefed up the football board by bringing in McClaren… McClaren has also obviously been given the green light to bring in his own coaches….perhaps this is THE chance for McClaren to redeem his credibility at an EPL club… A major piece of the new jigsaw is that Charnley backs the coach in the transfer market…

This is also Ashley distancing himself even further from the running of the football side of things….leaving him free to concentrate on the big love in his life, making more spondoolicks for himself…

      (Quote)

  25. I’m happy enough the ways things are going. New manager, new coaches & willo is going. 😀

No we just need to spend some dough on quality players

      (Quote)

  26. Charnley added: “Steve has been tasked to secure a top-eight finish in the Premier League and he is also heavily incentivised to try to win a cup competition.

“We recognise supporters’ strong desire to win a trophy, an ambition which the club now shares, as Mike Ashley made clear in his comments on the last day of the season. Steve is excited by this and he has our full support in trying to achieve this goal.

  27. So what a move by Ashley à new head coach And à new board , the coaches sacked so Mclaren can bring in his OWN men And à football man on the board Who happens to be our last trophy winning captain .Are Things finally turning around for the good ? Time Will tell but i am actually looking forward too the transfer window for the first time in years. Micah Richardson And Austin in And we really could start too get excited again

I think we did well to ditch Pardews’ coaching set up for Maclaren and co. Derby were a tad trigger happy to get rid of him if you ask me. Will they be leading the championship again any time soon with the next bloke? Now for the big summer signings Charnley. No rest for the wicked.

      (Quote)

  33. I’d have preferred a more creative option for coach, but I guess McClaren will have to do. It has some logic about it. As has the change of board members.

Good to see the football aims in print. Good communication that, mind.

All in all a step in the right direction.

Now, the wait-and-see till a few signings are made.

  34. Well, McClaren has certainly talked the talk for me in that SSN interview. Just hope Fatboy gives him some decent crutches. I have renewed hope now anyway. Pardew is a ****, let’s face it. Oversized ego, and an inability to appreciate the intelligence of others. Always gona be a one-way ticket to cuntville. At least McClaren is amiable, calm and precise. I’m gona stick my metaphoric neck out and say I think it’ll work.

  36. Nothing really changes with the new board members. Carr and Moncur have been involved at the club for the last few years so it’s not as if there’s new voices or ideas in the boardroom. Not really sure what benefit we get from having Mc on the board either but doubt it will have a negative impact either.

He’s always talked a good game did Stevie so now he needs to back it up, but that can only be done if Ashley spends money and a couple of media outlets are saying £40m – well that won’t get us into the top 10, never mind too 8 and a cup. Everyone else will be spending big time so we need to keep up or die.

  42. Could anyone imagine Real Madrid or Barca or Man Utd announcing a new manager and only allowing the Day Mirror and Sky to interview him? How small time are we?

How on earth are we suppose to increase our brand awareness around the world if we only talk to two media outlets?

They’re absolute clowns, they really are.

  43. Stu, you have already stated that SM is an underwhelming appointment and yet you still want us to get up on stage and shout it out to the world!

  44. Aussie – careful mate. They are 2 totally different points and should in no way be link … apparently 😆

Stu – there is only the Mail that has reported that (surprise). So the fact others media outlets haven’t had a gripe, may suggest there was a valid reason. Though it could also just be easier to write them off as inept half wits I suppose

  45. Actually a lot of press guys are miffed going by their tweets yesterday. The main point being that it’s a missed opportunity to foster better relations and start afresh.

  46. I’m not angry about it,just a bit saddened that we look so insular and petty. This was a new season and new approach according to Mike, to me it just seems the same with a different manager and board reshuffle.

      (Quote)

  47. Aussie, being underwhelmed by SM shouldn’t mean you don’t want to hear what he has to say, he is our new manager after all. I don’t mind steve getting the job at all, we were never gonna get any better for various reasons we are all aware of.

      (Quote)

  48. Aussie – Not everyone thinks his appointment is underwhelming and it’s not about what I think, it’s about the club spreading the brand as much as they can. They have just appointed a new coach, also a new board with a very different direction to any other club in the world by having the coach on the baord. Why not try and maximise the exposure? It’s ridiculous that they’re strangling any momentum they had with their own supporters and also shrinking their exposure outside anyone who reads the Mirror or subscribes to Sky. What about the people in Africa, India or Asia? The growing football world.

All in all it’s so small time and makes us look stupid, sad and small.

Why don’t the big clubs do what we did? Do you really think they would put a cap on the number of supporters they can reach?

“How on earth are we suppose to increase our brand awareness around the world if we only talk to two media outlets?”

Just because certain media outlets were banned it doesn’t mean that they didn’t report it. Take the Telegraph for example – Luke Edwards has so far written FOUR articles about it so I think all his readers are more aware of the brand than ever.

Telegraph, Times, The Sun, The Mail and local papers all miffed and most have wrote an article on it. But to be honest I am not bothered about their reasons for being miffed. They won’t be the same as mine. Theirs will be selfish reasons, mine is that fact the club is introverted and not looking outward. It’s utterly small time! It’s also an exciting time for a supporter to see a new coach in a press conference but we won’t get that.

Aussie – regardless of whether I am underwhelmed by McClaren, he is now our coach so he will get my support, just like Pardew did.

      (Quote)

  51. Kim for me this was the Regimes perfect chance to show that they do intend to change and become more open, as they have promised, but by banning all but 2 media outlets in to the unveiling has left a very sour taste in the eyes of most, and gives the impression that they were protecting McClaren from being asked any hard questions.
I hope McClaren is a huge success for us but I can’t help but feel that he has another mountain to climb to try to get the media especially local media on our side. And no matter what anyone says IMO it is far better to have them on your side than against you, thats maybe why none of the other prem teams pick and choose what media are allowed in to press conferrences.
