Well it’s that time of year again. New Manager, New Coaches and hopefully new Players. We have been promised some big spending but I suspect that 2 £15 players will be the limit with a few cheaper options. The question is who? But in order to determine that we need to determine how we are going to play. 1 striker or 2? Wing Backs? Three at the back? Well we need an all new back four just about so I’ll go 4-4-1-1.
So starting at the front we need a CF to lead the Line, and Charlie Austin at £15m has been linked, So has Andy Carroll at considerably less. I don’t see Bamford or Berhino as leading the line. Bas Dost is 6′ 5” which is good, and at £7m a cheaper option. We already have Cisse, but I want three options. So I would look at Robert Beric from Rapid Vienna only 23 Slovenian and with 27 goals from 33 starts last season, a snip at £2m.
Behind our CF we need a creative second striker. We have DeJong, Vuckic & Perez. In this SS / Attacking Midfield role. That’s 2 sicknotes and a kid. So I would cast a look at Nikolaos Karelis who is 23 and plays as a second striker for Panathinaikos. He would cost about £2.5m and he scored 13 goals last season. Juanmi from Malaga is only 22 would cost £6m but only scored 8.
Also in attacking roles I want wingers. We have Cabella and Marveaux. Maybe McLaren can get a tune out of those two, and we have young Aarons coming through. But this is where we need to spend. On the LW I’d buy Shkelzen Gashi from FC Basel at 26 and £5m he is not cheap, but 26 goals from 39 last season is not to be sniffed at. On the RW I want Domenico Berardi. Now this is my big buy. He’s only 20, left footed right winger, playing for Sassuolo (on loan from Juve) in Italy Serie A he knocked in 15 gaols and 13 assists. A snip at £15m. I’ll take that.
CM we have Tiote & Sissoko who if on their day are actually an excellent pairing. However, we may lose one or both of them which leaves Colback and Abeid which whilst OK does need some support. I’m not convinced that Anita & Bigi provide that. Possibly Leroy Fer & Will Hughes who McLaren will know, but at about £8m each do we need to spend? For me only if we sell in this area first.
Full backs we have Dummett & Haidara on the left and Janmaat on the right. Now I know Micah Richards has been mentioned, but Kieron Tripper at Burnley and Andy Robertson from Hull both had decent seasons and £8m for the pair might be better value than Richards wages.
Which of course leaves CB I think that given that the only one who may make the grade is Lescalles, and he is not the finished article, then we can look at Steven Caulker at QPR and James Chester at Hull. But I like the look of Stefan Mitovic at Frieburg. At £3m he is about the same prices as James Chester whilst Steven Caulker is being talked of at £15m.
So, there are 3 £15m players there, Austin, Calker & Berardi. I’ll happily settle for 2 of those. Then there are another 6 players for a total of £20m Beric, Karelis, Gashi, Tripper, Robertson & Mitrovic. Then if we need some others due to players moving on then there are a few options in there. Now I’m not suggesting for 1 minute that I’m a better scout than Carr, or that the stats that I have accessed for these players means that they are the right players for us, but is shows what is out there. We could have a complete new team. But then Spurs tried that when they sold Bale. And this is Newcastle. Will Ashley put his money where his mouth is?

On Austin if he is our main target then they need to push the boat out to get him, as without doubt he will get us a higher place finish so will help pay for himself. Aussie – I fully understand your logic mate and agree with you to a point. QPR are in a ***** financial position due to recklessly slashing the cash, but if it’s done sensibly then you are potentially adding value to the clubs assets. You suggest a budget of £60m, so I say Austin @ £15m, Berahino @ £15m and Matip @ £10m. There’s £40m on 3 top first team players mate and it still leaves £20m for RB cover, winger and midfielder.
I would also get in on the loan acting as well personally. Scum are linked with Karl Jenkinson from Arsenal for a season loan & option to buy – I think he’d be good cover for Janmaat.
Ask Man Utd about Januzaj or Madrid about Odegaard.
All I’m saying Aus is that we don’t have to play safe every window. Players like Austin & Berahino could actually double in value.

Austin may not hit the same heights if he joins us, but I doubt that will be the case personally. He has consistently got the goals throughout his career no matter what standard of players were around him. If we improve our supply lines (which we will) -then I just can’t see him failing. If him and Dost turn up, it will be genuinely exciting to see real depth of quality up front again – and the forwards will be putting the effort in because of the competition for a starting berth. Fingers crossed.

CC – Liverpool have spent a lot of money on some very questionable signings IMO, and are going down the same route this summer. I’ve read this morning they are ready to shell out around £7m on an 18yr old defender from Charlton. There first choice defenders aren’t that good to begin with.

The reports I’m reading are that Liverpool are keen on Benteke. But they already have Sturridge & now Ings so Austin may see his chances limited there too. I would more expect to see Liverpool going for Berahino & Henandez.

bas dorst is an average striker who struggled to get into the wolfsburg and is nowhere near the cloggy national team. not my cup of tea, but he is most likely the striker we will get cos the rest of the names being bandied about don’t want to join the toon otherwise we would have them over the line by now. the agin we have 3 great strikers in cisse, perez and riviere who will be a revelation after his disappointing first season in the epl…

Stuart79@39, what is it you don’t understand about the word “struggled” ? Dorst played in approximately 50% of Bundesliga games in his 3 years in Germany…the first season was even less, so in fact he did struggle to get into the Wolfsburg team. Expect to see Andre Schurrle keep him out of the team this season too….plus Wolfsburg will be signing players as they will be playing Champions League next season.
He’s an average striker, and if he’s average in the Bundesliag well…. we’ll see what he can achieve if it gets that far…. a lot of risk for 12 million…

Wolfsburg are playing Champs League next season, and have loads of money, so would expect them to strengthen… there are players who like to spend 2-3 seasons playing in different countries, mabye Dorst is one of them…or maybe our cloggy connection have been on his case behind the scenes…?

I am going to repeat myself but it is about time we bought horses for courses. That means someone like Bas Dost because I doubt at age 27 Timmy the hoof is going to change. The pattern has been for Timmy (and Willo) to belt it long to our small front line and the other teams’ centre halfs to send it straight back to our half. Cisse isn’t that small but he is all instinct and never seems to win the balls in and around the half way line.
Unless McClaren changes everything then we need someone to lead the line. Dost’s goals to games ratio seems pretty good and whenever I have seen him play (twice) he looked OK. We need a physical presence up front and at the back.
You would think Sammy might be the man to do the odd headed clearance and pop up in the box once in a while? However, for someone who is 6-6 I cant recall him ever having a header on target.
