Newcastle United V Northampton Town – League Cup Thread

Will Toon survive a Giant Killing?
Will Toon survive a Giant Killing?
Steve McClaren and Lee Charnley have both gone on record to state that Newcastle United will now be taking Cup Competitions seriously and actively try to win them. Some might say that’s supposed to be the whole point in football – but the club adopting this approach is better late than never! So here is your dedicated match thread to comment on the game currently under way at St.James’ Park.

Steve McClaren has made 9 changes from our recent draw with Manchester United following Tim Krul’s suggestion that the team is shattered after a long season of 3 games thus far. It is an opportunity for the fringe players to stake a claim for the 1st team whilst a couple of players will be trying to showcase their skills to potential suitors knowing that they are surplus to requirements (aka Mike Williamson and Yoan Gouffran).

Earning starts tonight are the likes of Rolando Aarons, Florian Thauvin and Siem De Jong. Despite being a back up team – it looks rather strong. It will be interesting to see what condition Aarons and De Jong are in following long lay offs last season and if they have the stamina to pull through 90 minutes. Meanwhile we get a more thorough look at future world’s best player Thauvin and the new English lads at the back (Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles) get a chance to impress. Our recent future prospect signing Ivan Toney may get an opportunity to hurt his former club should the management decide to give him a run later in the game. He starts on the bench.

Unfortunately there are no match threads so its a case of looking at the live feeds from BBC etc for your updates.

No dedicated live commentary either, but click here and you will get live updates every now and then including when any goals go in.

  1. Unbelievable that we cannot get any TV stream or even radio commentary. I’m stuck in a hotel in Norway and was really looking forward to watching or at least listening…

  2. Dubai, must of tried a dozen links earlier, all want you to register or try and infect you, it’s really bloody frustrating, even radio Newcastle won’t let me listen on line.

  3. Been a little busy the last few days so haven’t been able to post.

Nice article Sham. I do agree that it looks rather strong and makes a bit of a mockery of people saying we have a weak squad. We have decent options now in most positions. I’d like to get a young hungry player to compete at right back though.

  4. Yeah saw that Toonsy 🙂 Nice to see De Jong and Thauvin stick it in the back of the net. We need more goals from midfieldthis season.

  5. Look quite lively up front, especially Thauvin but by all accounts Aarons hasn’t shone and we have been quite dodgy at the back. Anyone confirm this?

  6. Skill from Perez dropping deep, picking ball up and turning. Out to Thauvin (who the commentators say looks proper quality by the way) – who crosses for Janmaat.

  7. talksport Kim. Link on article. Not hard to equal Cabella. Lost track of how many times I have told people he is total *****!

Villa 3-2 down to Notts County.

  8. I did see more waffle from Stuart though. At no point did I say that Colo is guaranteed his space regardless of how he plays! I do love (not) how some people completely twist what others are saying to try to make a weird point.

    What I am saying is:
1 – McClaren has confirmed Colo as his captain, kept him from leaving and given him a 1 year extension. He is not about to drop him unless he has a serious loss of form
2 – Mbemba clearly has been signed to play
3 – McClaren has also supported Taylor (and I think he can do a job with the right partner – not Willo) so he will expect to compete to play
4 – We also have just signed Lascelles and have Dummett

You will notice I exclude Willo, as I expect him to be on his way. But the fact is, it would be terrible man management to sign a player to displace either Colo or Mbemba at this stage and makes no sense to sign a big money defender to be 3rd or 4th choice when we already have that lot. So that’s why I don’t think we’ll sign a new CB.

That’s not to say I’m 100% happy with our defence, just that I don’t think it makes any sense to sign a new CB and I’m willing to wait and see how they do. Plus, I felt that Colo and Mbemba would be our first choice and I thought they’d do pretty well once they have had a chance to get to know each other.

Main areas I would like to see focus on signing are:
1 – competition at right back
    2 – goals

  9. a top centre half who regularly gets his name on the scoresheet. what more do you mags want ? 😉

  10. Aarons is raw. People calling for him to play against Man Utd were crazy. The guy has talent, but so do plenty of other players who haven’t made it. Hopefully he can play a part this season.

  11. I agree TDS. He is a work in progress. He also struggles with stamina and wont last 90 minutes game in, game out through a season. He is a squad player for this season at least.

Not sure if he’s the kind of player who would benefit from going on loan either. Different players develop in different ways. Agree on stamina and think he’s probably best working with our fitness coaches rather than at a lower league club. Injuries certainly don’t help a young player’s development!

  13. Yeah think you are right TDS. He’s too good to go out on loan anyway – great impact sub whilst he builds his stamina up.

  14. Newkie, He’s certainly had a good night tonight and it’s all confidence building as they say.

3 – Florian Thauvin is the first player to assist three goals in a League Cup game since Lewis Holtby in September 2013 (v Villa). Trio.

It’s good to see a player go out on loan when they’re fit enough to be playing 90 mins every week but need match experience. Like Armstrong for example. At 18 and doing well, really intrigued to see if he can come back and be a player for us in future.

And yeah, agree Aarons pace is certainly decent when the opposition’s defence tires! No point in starting him against decent defenders just yet.

  17. Not only cup tied, but now he is a goal scoring defender! Something we have been after for ages. He has proved now that we had him wrong all this time… Our savior. How could we possibly let him go now?

      (Quote)

  18. So you’re saying those points are not going to be discussed again? We’re not going to have to discuss “needing” a centre back again?

I am capable of following live text while doing other things. It’s not as if I have much to say on the game without being able to watch it…

  19. Kim – yeah, I thought maybe Manchester would have been too early for him, but surely earned a start now. I know people are banging on about how aarons isn’t ready, but if Obertan starts another bloody PL match when we have these guys around then fucking hell…

  20. If we’ve got the likes of Thauvin, Aarons, Perez and SDJ to come in then things look pretty good. Everyone who has played so far has proven they can do a job too.

  21. Good game, Perez definitely gives the team something extra. MOTM between him and Janmaat.

I’d drop sissoko for Perez and Colback for Tiote.

Willo didnt do too badly either. Aarons didnt impress

Getting in was a complete shambles. Queued from 7:30 until 8:05 and there was still people outside

  22. Id take a first class LB over a CB personally.
Lets hope Thauvin can repeat that performance in the Prem

  23. thauvin showed some nice skill, he’ll do well here I reckon.

Good to see De Jong get a full game. hes got a good touch but misplaced 4 through-balls, all a bit heavy

  24. Not good Gashley. How the he’ll did that happen? Especially given its a cup game with below average attendance…

Good to hear another positive review about Perez. Seems Carr dug out a proper gem there.

Not sure I agree about swapping players on the basis on this game against lower league opposition mate. On that basis, we’d play Willo instead of Mbmeba!

    MDS

Still a question mark on someone who will score at least 15 goals a season for us though. Austin would be an attractive option but not convinced we’ll go for him when we have Mitrovic, Cisse and Perez and I can’t see the first two doing anything other than playing upfront.
