Game On! Newcastle v Arsenal

Magpies v Gunners
Magpies v Gunners
Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and of course welcome along to this ‘Game On’ thread which will take us through every twist and turn of the game against Arsenal.

A week after our rather notable goalless draw at Old Trafford it’s yet another early start for the benefit of the TV cameras, with BT Sport again selecting our game for live coverage.

That 0-0 draw last week was followed up by a safe passage through to the next round of the League Cup after seeing off Northampton Town 4-1, with new signing Florian Thauvin impressing on his home debut. You can see what Bet O’Clock reckon the odds of Thauvin proving to be a thorn in the side of The Gunners by taking a look at the link.

The question now will obviously be whether he can come close to replicating the form he managed against a League Two side when he faces sterner opposition in the form of Arsenal.

I’ll miss the match completely as I’m at work from pretty much the moment the game kicks off but I’ll be checking back her for updates so keep those comments rolling.

For those at the game make sure you have a good one and for those not at the game or who aren’t able to catch BT Sport please remember to share links in the comments below.

Team news to follow.

Howay the lads!

  1. Abdennour to Valencia for £22m, champions league football and replaces Ottamendi who goes to City for £28.5m, not snubchester united.

We ain’t shopping in that supermarket, so might as well forget those sorts of players. 😉

  2. ‘On 12 March 2015, Demichelis renewed his expiring contract until June of the following year.’
Must be nice to have the money for players like that in reserve, just in case. 🙂

  3. KIM yes mate it works (billy whiz) lol,,anyway four goals in twenty six games is not what I call a good strike rate not at 10mil like.

Something has to change, yes the team looks better but five strikes on goal in four games (taking out cup game) is just not good enough

  4. Ice I agree we still aren’t quite right, the lack of service is a worry . Can’t see this lad helping much.

  5. Always nice to see Sky shot down, Even if it is Pete Graves who i do like. He tweeted barely an hour ago their german “sources” had it a strong possibility.

Miles Starforth then said no interest in Lassogga

Graves then tweeted the same 😆

  6. Fans getting twitchy again after only 4 games. I guess it’s understandable but Swans and Manu away are never easy fixtures and we’ve not beaten Arsenal at home since 2005. So it could be 3 of the top 5 we’ve played, 2 of which with 10 men. We’ll do a lot better as the season progresses 😉

  7. So up front. Cisse, p/t Serb, Perez, Armstrong, Toney & Riviere
That’s assuming we can recall Armstrong.
Even so 5 strikers is a lot.
Only 2 id like to see starting though.

  8. If we’d won either the Manure or Saints game, and we weren’t far away, then we’d be above Chelski on goal difference and I think everyone would be happy, given the start we’ve had. Chins up, there are 34 games left and Maccas’ barely got his feet under the desk. Four first team players to bed in. None have played in Premier League before.

I’m going to keep asking this: why do @NUFC think it’s acceptable to misquote Sir Bobby in their pre-match video.

I was wondering the same thing 😕

  10. Graham Poll, the ex prem referee, who is asked to review referees decisions for the FA, has just been on talksport and states Steve McClaren was wrong for questioning Mitrovic’s red card. He reckons it was a stone waller.
I don’t think I’ve heard any pundit yet disagree but it doesn’t stop some toon fans disagreeing.
    YCMIU 🙄

  11. Troy, have to agree, at the game I couldn’t tell, watching TV, he had to go. Just hope he sorts his head out and try’s to impress by ball in back of the net. Also hope you are right and Mr Austin signs, so we will have somebody to fill in for next 2 or 3 and then good competition for each other

  12. Simon
Thanks for reminding everyone that I said Austin would sign for us. 😯
I was hoping people had forgot. 😆

  13. Hitman – nobody cares about the head to head except Bris, it’s all about the overall league.

Which, conveniently, I am winning by the way

  14. Prem: I have a serious question, what does p/t Serb mean? I know it is Mitrovic but what does p/t stand for?

  15. Eric. Kim is right. A) because he’s only available part time, & b) I can’t spell his name 😀

  16. I have seen Marinner and other Refs this weekend defended by former colleagues and a lot of the Punditry. It is utter bollocks in my opinion. Yes in most cases he applied the letter of the law and the decision might have been correct in isolation. However, no game works like that. Clumsy early challenges are usually waved off with a wag of the finger or quiet word (Sissoko was booked on 3 minutes). The Refs almost invariably let go a few fouls that could be considered yellows so the game can flow. There are numerous instances in every match where the letter of the law was not applied. If it was, then Roy Keane would never last a full 90 minutes and Alex Ferguson would have the Ref demoted to The Championship. It ruined our game, it ruined the game for Norwich and it ruined the game for Stoke.

And don’t tell me there is not a big team bias. Again using Man U as an example, they are/were given so many penalties at OT it became a joke. The pundits are all theirs and Liverpool’s ex-players as well.

All that said, Mitrovic should not have given the Ref the opportunity to send him off, even though I still think it was extremely harsh.

      (Quote)

  17. And how many “leading with the arm” challenges and wrestling at corners go unpunished? There is definitely a double standard where a pullback in the opponent’s half gets a yellow and an elbow to the head is ignored 90% of the time.

By the way, the pundits in the US who are ex-PL but not big 4 thought the red was harsh but could be justified. I sort of agree with that, but refereeing should not be about always applying the letter of the law and almost always is not.

      (Quote)

  18. The only pundit I heard was BBC radio 5 live, where Danny Murphy said in response to twitter comments that it was never a leg breaking challange. Maybe broken toenail. He felt it was harsh as it was trying to control a ball coming over his body.

      (Quote)

  19. I may be wrong Troy but wasn’t it the infallible Graham Poll who once gave a player three yellows?

      (Quote)

  20. Just watched a bit of Sevilla-Athletic. In a 5 minute spell:

    – Greizeman wrestled to the ground on the edge of the box, but carries on and makes an assist from the ground.
    – Clear elbow to the head in the box by Athletic
    – Torres mis-times challenge and brings studs down opponents leg and catches his foot in the same way as Mitrovic, but probably accidental
    – Athletic player taken out with a flying challenge, but opponent gets a piece of the ball as well

None of these received cards and only Torres was assessed a foul. It is a great free flowing game with a lot of physical contact played by men. And that is my point, most of this by the letter of the law was dangerous play but none of it resulted in a card. There should be some discretion by the Ref and Mariner showed none on Saturday.

Oh, and they weren’t rolling around in apparent agony as their colleagues waved imaginary cards.

      (Quote)

  21. Taking Mitrovic’s red card out of the equation, can anyone argue that the ref treated both teams equally throughout the game? To me, it was blatantly obvious that “beautiful, free-flowing, ball-playing” Arsenal’s reputation played a huge role in the cards handed out to our players and not handed out to theirs. An argument can be made that Mitrovic deserved red (I certainly don’t think so – there’s a huge difference between having your studs up when trying to trap a ball coming down in the air versus sliding in on an opposing player in possession of the ball), but you cannot tell me that Giroud or Cazorla or any other Arsenal player, would have seen red for the same challenge.

And as for the pundits, they’re almost certain to go along with whatever the ref called on the field. If Marriner had pulled a yellow out of his pocket, every single one of those talking heads would have been saying “Good job by the ref there, no intent, give him a stern talking-to and get on with the game.”

  22. I would sell Perez for £15m. A replacement coats money and we don’t have time. He’s a top prospect.
Of course I seriously believe the club will cash in.

  23. It would make a joke of our ambition if we sell.
He could be worth a lot more if he has another good season.

  24. Troy – don’t see that one going either. Spurs have had a very disappointing window & now clutching at straws 🙄

You can replicate a Tottenham transfer window at your work canteen by panic buying a pot noodle for £20, a minute before they close.

  28. Perez, if managed well, will be worth well more than 15 mil in two or three years. **** it, he’s worth more than that now. Borini has gone for 10 mil ffs, so that puts Perez on at least 30 mil like 😆

  29. Prem – the guy is Bris’ ace in the hole, wait until they play each other, just you watch, he’ll load his team with Newcastle players and gift him three points on purpose.

You know, the way the actual NUFC play half time time 😉

  30. Well I’ve just been jarring up may latest conserve. It’s called ‘Naive Jam’. It’s named after (or inspired by) Steve Mac (McClucking) Laren. “We’ll only bring players in who have the right attitude”.

Clearly, Mitrovic is a fucking headcase.

    Please explain…?

  31. Ahhhh whatever. Fucking bureaucrat cunts.
The pros and cons of total anarchy are questionable anyway.

    I’m going partial (for now).

    **** **** bollocks.
    So there.

  32. wow…… you know you have issues when Rodz calls someone (Mitro) a fucken headcase! 😆 😆

  33. You see, I get Toon fans rooting for Perez, despite him having one season in the PL, scoring about 7 goals and done nothing yet this season…I get it because he is a Toon player! But don’t forget, he’s 22 already and we’ve seen plenty of players do ok and then disappear because they’ve been found out.

He might be a decent player but it’s still fairly early in his career for us. I’d be amazed if the £15m bid is true.

So what I don’t get is why fans blow Perez up beyond where I believe he really is, but then also knock Colo down so much…they’re both our players.

best advice i can give you bud is jog along to spec savers get 2 pairs for the price of 1 😯 how on this planet can you compare him to mr flop after flop season after season collo

      (Quote)

  35. TDS – Their situations are totally different mate. I’ve never really questioned Colo’s ability, just his commitment to the cause. If he can put the past two seasons behind him and have a stormer this year then fair play. Equally, I didn’t write him off after his first shocking season I don’t feel I’m being too overconfident in Perez either.

Harry Kane might be **** as well I guess, as he’s only had one good year/half season too?

      (Quote)

  36. theres no way we’ll sell perez for 15mil. the guy carried us last season with too much pressure put upon him, he’s only really played 1 game this season in the cup and looked excellent.

SM admitted he hadnt seen Perez up front before (DVD?!) …before the Cup game…Unless we buy another striker we won’t offload him.

A bit dissapointed Kemen is going. I would defo send him on load but why sell

  37. Think we’re closed for business today.

Other clubs seem to be still doing business and as I said above I will be interested to rate our squad against everyone else’s come 6pm tonight.

      (Quote)

  38. TDS, There is a big difference in Perez and Colo. Colo is aging and getting slower any cash we could get for him would be good at his age. Perez is young and obviously talented and will get better given the chance, also we were told he was one for our future when we signed him last year so why sell now. £15m would see £14m profit yes but we would be losing a player who gives us a good outlet when playing. If he continues to improve he’ll be worth a lot more than £15m next season.
