Steve McClaren has left the building!

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has officially been relieved of his duties as manager according to the club’s official website this morning.

With rumours floating around regarding McClaren’s imminent departure yesterday, it appears the club has finally put the ‘Wally with the brolly’ out of his misery by sacking him.

As per our story yesterday, Rafa Benitez is expected to take over his post at St James’ Park with just 10 Premier League games remaining to save our season. The Spaniard is reportedly in Tyneside as we speak thrashing out a deal with the powers that be at Newcastle with the club hoping to ‘present’ him as the new Magpies boss tomorrow.

Lee Charnley, Newcastle’s managing director said on nufc.co.uk: “I would like to thank Steve personally for his services to Newcastle United. He is a man of integrity and class and he has conducted himself with great dignity during this difficult time.

“Steve worked tirelessly to try and bring success to Newcastle United. He has the utmost respect of all the players, staff and management and he leaves with our very best wishes and sincere thanks.

  1. Big D: the problem is that if he keeps Coloccini as captain he will feel he has to play him. There are only 3 players that are certain starters in my opinion – Elliot, Jamaat and Shelvey.

I am not even sure about MBemba and Townsend as yet.

  2. Wijnaldum as well. I do not go along with the crowd who say he shouldn’t be played away from home. We needed a better set up away because 7 goals show that we were Carver-esque.

    This squad has been mismanaged.

  3. JJ: Carr and Pedro for the chop. After the lat game as you cannot have too much disruption. Will Rafa be able to understand St. Peter?

Of course, the other option is to sack the lot of them now and be done with it.

  4. Rafael Benitez will assess his players as he prepares for Monday night’s trip to Premier League leaders Leicester.
However, he will not have left-back Paul Dummett at his disposal after he aggravated a hamstring problem during last weekend’s 3-1 home defeat to Bournemouth, while skipper Fabricio Coloccini remains a doubt with a calf injury.

Midfielder Andros Townsend will hope to have shaken off the hamstring problem which has kept him out of the last two games, but goalkeeper Tim Krul (knee), defenders Chancel Mbemba (ankle), Massadio Haidara (knee) and Kevin Mbabu (thigh) and midfielder Gabriel Obertan (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.

Provisional squad: Elliot, Darlow, Janmaat, Taylor, Lascelles, Gibson, Tiote, Colback, Wijnaldum, Sissoko, Shelvey, Townsend, Saivet, De Jong, Anita, Gouffran, Aarons, Mitrovic, Cisse, Perez, Doumbia, Riviere.

  5. And sack the whole medical staff as well. Or, at least the ones in charge of hamstrings.

  6. Eric I really dont think Rafa is the type of manager that feels he would have to play a player if he didn’t think he was the best option.

  7. Eric – That should be his first decision. I’d go for Janmaat personally.

Just enjoying a bottle of Rioja, grinning ear to ear! Still can’t quite believe it. Just really hope we stay up because if we do I genuinely believe we have a cracking chance of getting into something special and actually give a trophy a go!

Hope if we lose against Leicester it doesn’t pop the bubble.

  9. All good news today Stuart. Are you 100% certain you will finish the whole bottle of red wine yourself? I would say I am 99.9% certain you will.

  10. Everybody: Rafa and the new staff at least give us a chance. I have been sick of watching us lose for 2 years and play ***** and scrape a few wins for four.

  11. I’d be suprised if anybody expects us to get a result against Leicester. We would be happy enough with a loss, but with a sign of better organisation and team.selection. what we will expect (and really badly need) is a win against Scum.

  12. SM has acted with dignity in the last few days, even though the bloke is completely deluded

However, he had to go, he was completely ***** from the start. STILL thought he could save us despite the players having a jolly abroad and 2 days holiday a week…. what the hell was he and the club thinking we could rest players?? I’m sure we have lots of things to work on. We will never see SM again in the Prem and we should be embarrassed we gave him another bite

  13. Ice was too old to watch cartoons when Steamboat Willy hit the screens 😛

Stuart..It shouldn’t really pop the bubble losing to the team at the top of the league away from home…the stress being on “shouldn’t!

  14. I’m 100% certain this bottle will be finished, Eric! In fact after that I might open the Veuve! It’s a momentous day. A change in direction for our club.

  15. We outplayed Liverpool, West Brom and Spurs second half so there is potential there. We even battered Stoke at home.

Can we have some even treatment from Refs?

Can we score from a corner or free kick?

Rafa would need to work miracles to achieve those things.

  16. Stuart: I have a 6 pack of Peroni in the fridge. I am going to start on that after I finish with the crack and meth.

  17. Eric I think you will find that Steamboat Willie was Disney’s third Mickey Mouse cartoon, After he lost the rights to Oswald the lucky rabbit. Apparently he wanted to call him Mortimer Mouse, but his wife over-ruled him.

  18. Richie There is nowt as good as a nice bottle of red mate, made even better if your feeling good , and after today I haven’t felt as good about our club in yrs.

  24. Dan King NUFCTV; Benitez wanted to meet the staff and take training before sitting down with nufcTV this evening, but his interview will be up very soon.

Jay @ 20.31 why can she lift you up to reach the bar 😉

  26. Richietoon: I have written off that game on Monday. You have to give Rafa more than 2 days man.

Now, after he has had another week to prepare for the Mackems I will be calling for his had if we lose that one 🙂

  27. Sitting in a hotel in Istanbul and happy as a pig in ****. Can’t believe we actually signed Rafa. However that’s only part of the job. We still need to get some wins and points … Let’s see!

  28. Richietoon @20.31: type in “TroyTV” and it will take you straight there. Maybe you shouldn’t.

  29. I’d like to make a point to the press that has slagged us off for the treatment of McClaren. Man City courted Guardiola for a whole year while Pelligrini was still in a job. Everyone knew Guardiola was getting the job even though Pelligrini still had to turn up for training for a year and even go to matches.

      (Quote)

  30. I reckon Rafa has been sat watching NUFC getting as frustrated as us Geordies. He’s went straight in to speak to the players and get his ideas across – he’s like a kid with a new toy who just wants to get on and play.

I worry for Monday though coz Marhez is hard enough to handle with a good left back – we don’t have one of those & it looks like it could well be Colback back there again.
I look forward to seeing what Rafa does now though.

      (Quote)

  31. Stuart…and I believe someone mentioned about Martin Jol the other day. Everyone knew he’d been sacked(apart from him probably) yet there he was on tv on the touchline managing Spurs.

      (Quote)

  32. Stuart: if it is disrespectful to have McClaren take training for 3 days whilst knowing he is gone, how disrespectful is it to have Pelegrini work for the rest of the season knowing he is sacked?

      (Quote)

  33. If Rafa cannot do it then I reckon nobody could. I think he will get us the wins we need. 😎 😆 😀 😀

      (Quote)

  34. It will be interesting to see who gets sacked as it will show who actually got Rafa in.

If it is Carr only then that is who Fatty blames.

If it is Carr and Charnley then we will know that the Fat Man was the main driver in appointing Rafa.

If it is Beardsley it will show that the reserves are *****.

      (Quote)

  35. Absolutely, Eric. That’s my point. Nobody has slagged City off for putting Pelligrini through it for a year but as soon as we do it, it’s outrageous!

      (Quote)

  36. Yup…Football can be cruel, but less cruel than the “real world” but much more financially rewarding, hard to feel sympathy and even more so when they are ***** at the job

      (Quote)

  37. Stuart: I understood mat. Just wanted to add a little bit more as Citeh get a free ride.

  38. Can’t believe we’ve got Benitez! Owa the moon! I was wishful thinking when I said I wanted him pre Pards.
A top manager at last. Hopefully he will control all football matters and turn our fortunes round. I’m right behind this appointment.

  39. So, will be get a new manager bounce? Rafa is shaped like one of those space hopper things some of us had as kids. I think he could bounce. And then there is Carr and the Fat Man. Charnley isn’t svelte either.

  40. What a great way to wake up. Howay Rafa!

And well done to whoever made the deal possible and whoever it was that made the decision to go for him.
