Steve McClaren has left the building!

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has officially been relieved of his duties as manager according to the club’s official website this morning.

With rumours floating around regarding McClaren’s imminent departure yesterday, it appears the club has finally put the ‘Wally with the brolly’ out of his misery by sacking him.

As per our story yesterday, Rafa Benitez is expected to take over his post at St James’ Park with just 10 Premier League games remaining to save our season. The Spaniard is reportedly in Tyneside as we speak thrashing out a deal with the powers that be at Newcastle with the club hoping to ‘present’ him as the new Magpies boss tomorrow.

Lee Charnley, Newcastle’s managing director said on nufc.co.uk: “I would like to thank Steve personally for his services to Newcastle United. He is a man of integrity and class and he has conducted himself with great dignity during this difficult time.

“Steve worked tirelessly to try and bring success to Newcastle United. He has the utmost respect of all the players, staff and management and he leaves with our very best wishes and sincere thanks.

  1. Troy can you remember us saying that if only Jabba changed his MO and got a manager like Rafa in , how we could be a real club.
But I can remember a few saying that Rafa would laugh at us ? 😉

  2. And finally Troysta’s reasoning that we will never get anyone better than Pards so we should keep him will not stand. I admit it took a clown (Ugly John) and his redheaded (tufted) stepchild to make them realise, but we got there.

  3. Eric Troy and myself 😉

Stu I tried going on there but every time I click the link it tells me to go on to the main site , so I will try her laptop later

  4. Big Dave
Yes mate. I’m really positive about this. The first top class manager since Sir Bobby.
This is who I wanted instead of Pardew.
    I will be revisiting SJP.

  5. Kimtoon: that we still have a manager who won La Liga and The Champions League and we still have 8 games to go. Hopefully Rafa will not call them 8 cup finals.

  6. Kim I was ready to write off the foxes game, but maybe now after a bittle of red wine I think we could go for a point , as for the SMB we need to win that and I think we will

  7. It is so easy to be cynical about NUFC but let’s have one day of hope. He got the bastards in to train on his first day.

  8. Dave, we are defo due a Derby result that’s for sure, just wish we had a full list of defenders like.

  9. I think Uncle Ed crapped his pants today. And that isn’t because he is a hundred and three.

  10. Pards never got us to Wembley. He did however nut a Hull player, well almost nut, he even failed at that.

  11. I really don’t care what Pardew does at Palace. I think he is an arrogant ***** and would never want him anywhere near NUFC again. Saying that, he was completely right about the penalty against Liverpool and came across well in that interview on Sky 🙂

  12. Hey but who gives a flying **** about Palace and Pardew?!! We got Rafa Freakin’ Benitez!!!!

  13. I hope this will be the last time I will ever mentions the words McClaren and Sharpy’s Blackie again. Unfortunately, Troysta will bring up Pards many times. I am sure of that. I mentioned him once but I think I got away with it.

  14. ————– Elliott ———–
    Jan – Saylor – Las – Colback
    ———— Shelvey ————
    Towns – Sissoko – Gini – Arrons
    ———– Mitrovic ————-

That’s how I’d line up on Monday night. Maybe drop Sissoko and move Shelvey up with Tiote playing holding. But I’d want to see a bit of width with Mitrovic the target man knocking it down left or right for those lads to run on to and Gini bursting a gut to get into the box.

  15. Eric – still trying for that bite I see fella 🙄 must be about the 4th or 5th time today you’ve referred to him as Sharpies Blackie 😐

      (Quote)

  16. Kim to be fair I was one of the ones that said we would never get better than pards ie a Puppet , unless Jabba changed the MO of how he runs the club, and finally get some ambition.
Which seems to be the case now

  17. Anita will probably play left back and Perez should play as he has a lot of energy and scored a goal recently, so

    Elliot

    Janmaat Taylor Lascelles Anita

    Perez Colback Shelvey Townsend

    Gini Mitro

It means dropping Sissoko and I doubt that will happen. So, swap Perez for Sissoko.

  18. Eric @ 22.00 I would bet my house that that wont be the last time you mention Schteve or Blackie or Carver or Merson etc 😆 😆 😉

      (Quote)

  19. We have to play Taylor and Lacselles at CB because who else do we have? Remember last year when Willo tried to cripple Vardy and sent him into the advertising boards 🙂 That was the best moment of Willo’s career but Ugly John said he did it to get sent off. No fcn way, he knew Vardy was 10 times as fast and wanted to maim him.

  20. And please refer to the people by their full names:

    Merson’s giant balloon like head

    Sharpy’s Blackie.

      (Quote)

  21. Eric – I know it might seem a bit negative with the new manager and all that but I would much prefer to see us play 5 in midfield.
Albrighton, Kante, Drinkwater and Mahrez are a real handful and I just think 5 in there might slow them down. We’d have pace in the counter attack with Townsend, Aarons and Gini all racing forward.
But when we don’t have the ball we have to have the numbers in there to protect our back 4.

      (Quote)

  22. Sharpy, I feel he will line us up pretty defensively, I don’t think it will be pretty football for some time but likely more effective.

      (Quote)

  23. Sharpy: this one time I would be happy with a defensive mid. Shelvey sticks the boot in but is more attack minded.

      (Quote)

  24. I have taken a liking to Jonjo. We were getting the runaround and he decided he was going to cripple someone. Now that is Captain material!!! Except he would be banned for 3 games.

He was full-on Willo and the Ref could easily have sent him off.

      (Quote)

  25. Rafa seems confident. Like the cut of his gib. But when you’ve achieved what he has achieved why shouldn’t you be confident?

Can any PL manager look down their nose at him? Don’t think even one!

  26. Thought there would have been a new thread up, what with the new ‘manager’ coming in.
maybe someone will be bothered to write a matchday thread for monday
anyways, I dont see how we can commit to 2 up front at Leicester, so I’m with Sharps. cram the midfield with 5 and protect the back 4. When we do get a chance, and we will, get a few forwards and have a go, but just dont commit harry carry.

      (Quote)

  27. Great news… Unfortunately he is a very good manager and I feel we need a miracle worker.

Well done to Big Dave and Troy for being the only ones that recommended Rafa.. specifically when everyone else was saying he would laugh at us…. makes me wonder why they were both so sure we would never get anyone better than Pardew under this regime. From memory we are still under the same regime. .. 😆 😆

  28. Credit where credit is due. Muttering the words Rafa, erm, Benitez 5 years ago under your breath does not count as some sort of sooth saying when he is appointed in 2016. Baba Ganoush would not be proud. I will not be crossing Big D’s or Troy’s palms with any silver. And Mystic Meg at The Sun will not be worried about her job either.

    Diego Simeone in 2021 anyone?

  29. Mick Quinn reacts on twitter about the appointment of Rafa Benitez:

“you not going to eat that half a sandwich left on your plate? Mind if I have it?”

  30. And Ryder takes to facebook saying “no, I was never in favour of Carver or McClaren, and said so many times [no you didn’t]. What’s that you say, you can look at old articles on the internet? Let us never speak of this again. Ugly John and Schteve are dead to me, it is like they never existed”.

  31. And Paul Merson takes to google plus to comment: “does this hat come in six sizes larger”.

  32. And Mark Lawrenson goes on Freinds Reunited to say: “does this mustache make me look fat, a girl has to watch her figure?”

  33. And Michael Owen goes on twitter to say “why don’t I have a name shortening. Lawro has one, Carra too, Stevie and Thommo. I will now go by my full name Michael Interesting Owen, just to get back at all of you lot. What are the odds on that chestnut at Doncaster Micky Quinny? ”

  36. TAE: Carr will be gone in the summer. He was responsible for going after McClaren and thereby appointing Carver as an interim manager.

I don’t think all of his player selections have been bad though, he should have stayed out of running the club and done his job as scout.

Carr has been about average with his player selections – some totally *****, some good and one that was that could have been a legend like Beardsley or Shearer but who was mismanaged by Pardew (ben Arfa).

      (Quote)

  37. Let me change that. Mondial did all of Carr’s players selections so he was a ***** scout because he did no scouting, just picked up the phone from Agents.

  38. Gashley
Times maybe changing. The TV deal has certainly made a difference.
Who would have believed we would have spent £80m in the last two transfer windows, the biggest spenders in European football. ?
    Not even you. 😉

  39. so 2 days of training to assess his squad and get some sort of game plan together for Leicester.
    no small task.
if we get anything at all on monday night, it will be a bonus. But I can see him with his hands in his head saying “wtf have I done?”
Looking for a miracle, but not expecting one.

  40. Good morning .co.uk,
Just wondering what businessman of the year TDSarf has to say on the appointment of Benitez after banging on for years what a bang average club we are that suffered a blip when appointing KK and SBR?

      (Quote)

  41. Troy – but think how much better we would have been, had that £80M been spent on just a few quality players in the right positions.
I dont think Rafa will have an open chequebook if we survive the drop, which could be a bit of a problem, but at least he will bring in the players he needs to do a proper job.
Just desperately hoping he can do enough to keep us up.

      (Quote)

  42. Bootsy
I agree. Though Ashley did leave it to the transfer committee and McLaren to buy the players.
I just hope that is now taken out of their hands and Rafa now has the final say, which I’m sure he will have demanded. At leat Ashley opened the purse strings and now has invested in a proven manager and abandoned his transfer committee.
    Things are looking more rosy.
Sometimes you have to make mistakes and take dead ends to get onto the right route.

      (Quote)

  43. Big Dave says he is 99.9% certain of our chances of survival now.
Maybe that was the drink though 😛
I certainly feel we couldn’t have done our chances any better with any other manager.
so much depends on the derby now. Win that and I think we are laughing.
