This season’s transfer window is among the most important in Newcastle United’s history. Despite being relegated the club remains odds on to come back up from the Championship at the first attempt, but a lot hinges on the business that gets done over the next few weeks.
Rafa Benitez has been very open in stating that we don’t need to sell any players in order to bring in new ones. Regardless, some of the first team squad will inevitably make way this summer – following his team selections as we slid towards relegation it’s fairly obvious who does and doesn’t feature in his plans.
Given the eight extra games that the team will take part in next season the need for boosting areas of the squad is fairly apparent. So who could we call on with experience of playing in the Championship? Here are five potential transfer candidates who could do a job.
Will Hughes, central midfielder, Derby County
The Derby central midfielder has recently come back from a cruciate ligament injury sustained on the first day of the season and, although only 21, had featured regularly for three full seasons before the 2015/16 campaign. He made his debut for England’s U21 team when only 17 and definitely has the potential to develop further – so his next move will be crucial. Hughes signing for Newcastle will very much be dependent on how many midfielders leave though, as it’s an area in which the club are pretty strong right now. He’s also been linked with moves to Premier League clubs already, and may fancy taking the direct route. Very technically gifted with a good eye for a pass, he could be an attractive proposition to add the creativity that has been lacking in the middle of the park.

Munich – I’m with you & Sham. I don’t have a drop of Irish blood in my veins, but I loved the N.Irish game the other night too.
Iceland against Portugal was a good game too – and I love their manager Lars Lagerback. Awesome name & he seems to have been in every tournament I’ve ever watched.

I am telling you, you know things are slow on the NUFC front when Uncle Ed is struggling to belt out 20 articles a day.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
I watched the Spain game last night as well & Iniesta is just one of the best footballers of my generation IMO. That bloke is just brilliant.
Sharpy17(Quote)
SSN reporting that we are looking at a season long loan of 17yr old Reece Oxford from WHU 😯
The last thing I want to do is develop their players for them!!!.
Plus, I’m not sure an inexperienced 17yr old CB is what we are crying out for to be honest.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Sharpy17, a lot of future Premier League players cut there teeth at small Championship clubs. Don’t you go getting all ahead of yourself now mate, we need all the help we can get.
Plus John Terry was loaned out at an early stage of his career….
Munich Mag(Quote)
Munich – I’m not saying he’s not a good player, I’m just dead against developing other clubs starlets mate.
If we were loaning him with a view to ultimately buying him then go for it. But I don’t see WH going for that with this kid.
Also, as good as his potential is, we lack leaders – we have for a long time now. I don’t see a 17yr old coming in on loan as adding that vital role.
I want to see us building a strong squad to take back to the PL. Buy a player now and he’s bedded in this season ready for the PL next season (providing we go up of course).
Sharpy17(Quote)
I have enjoyed a few games too, love watching Italy and enjoyed watching N.Ireland too, the Portugal Iceland game was great if only to see the look on Ronaldos face at the end 😆 For every team who has played for a draw there has been one trying to win it. Premier League has gotten really stale for me so a nice change. I’m hoping the new managers coming into the PL this coming season will fire it up again. Best bit about last season was Leicester defying the odds.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Ice, hope your back is better soon mate, back trouble is awful, has your Mrs been over working you? 😀
Kimtoon(Quote)
Sharpy, you are dead right about UEFA and the French, it is a big concern that flares are getting into stadia, I posted about it earlier.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Kim – after what happened in Paris earlier this year, it is frightening that we are seeing scene like last nights Croatia game & England game against Russia.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Oh and the new toon top is bloody horrible!!!! 👿
Sharpy17(Quote)
Sharpster, maybe the young West Ham lad is in the final year of his contract…. or we have negotiated a rent to buy contract ?
If we had a whole host of top class centre halves coming through our Academy we wouldn’t be sniffing. Plus we need cover for Mbemba who will be nicking off to the ANC in January… If he’s good enough for West Ham sprogs, he’ll be good enough for the Championship.. I have no qualms with us bringing in players to improve the team, loanees or not, if they are good enough, get them in. It’s not like he’ll be facing Aguero, Giroud and co every week in the Championship either mate… what better place to cut your teeth than under Rafa at the toon ? 45 K crowds every other week, being coached by a Champions League winning coach … the players will be queing up to join us…
Munich Mag(Quote)
KIM no mate bloody weeding I had battle with a young hawthorn bush heaving away, crack the bush won afterthought I should have used a spade, the Mrs got it 😳 😳
Icedog(Quote)
You are right but we still need a good commanding experienced player in at the back too once Colo goes which looks likely. The kids need to learn from a quality player to bring them on.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Ice , same with me after I fought a hour and a half battle with the biggest heaviest clump of reed type things you ever saw a while ago. The builder who did my wall couldn’t believe I had dug the buggers up, he struggled to lift the clump. I told him I spend my life supporting and sometimes lifting a 13 and a half stone lad so those feckers were never gonna get the better of me. It’s not the digging but as you say the heaving that does you.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Ice, There’s nowt like an unruly bush mind 😉
Kimtoon(Quote)
😆 😆 😆
Icedog(Quote)
Munich – as I say mate, if there is an option to buy him then I’m all for it. Loan him now then spend money on him with the promotion money. The money we have now can go on older more experienced CB as we are loosing Saylor & Colo (hopefully the latter anyway).
But if there is no option to buy & it’s just a case of have him for a season then send him back, I’m against that idea big time mate.
Sharpy17(Quote)
SHARPY with you 100%. on that mate
Icedog(Quote)
It’s knowing how to tackle them is the secret 😉
Icedog(Quote)
Ireland well stuffed now,pity
Icedog(Quote)
So they say 😀
Kimtoon(Quote)
Got to feel for Ireland mind, no way back from this
Kimtoon(Quote)
if Italy play a b team with them already being through, 4 points might be enough with some of the best runners up going through.
Doubt it though Marty’s party’s lasted about as long as it did on wearside
CC(Quote)
Talk Italy may rest three of their best defenders for next game
Icedog(Quote)
Can they do that? that’ll help Ireland
Kimtoon(Quote)
Icelands big dream continues
Kimtoon(Quote)
KIM it’s just what one of the pundits had heard the three that are in their 30s
Icedog(Quote)
If Ireland get 4 points that almost guarantees progression. I have seen some stats on this and depending on goal difference if you have 4 points you have between a 95-99% chance. I don’t think they are a very good team though, so they will do well to beat even a depleted Italy.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
On the quality of football, I think it has been about the same as other Euro tournaments. The first games are all cagey affairs because no one wants to lose. Then you tend to see a breakout in the second games as the cream rises to the top and you have drama in the 3rd game as it is do or die. This year we have had some late drama in games.
The real stuff starts at the knockout stage and England will almost certainly be part of that.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
So the injurys have started already Armstrong injured may not be ready for first game of season, poor kid
Icedog(Quote)
og , that’s tough luck for Iceland, yet another late goal
Kimtoon(Quote)
I remember Ray Houghton scoring a great winner for Ireland against Italy in USA ’94. Keep the faith ?
Shamrock(Quote)
Ice, typical, he gets injured away with England
Kimtoon(Quote)
Gutted for Iceland, horrible to drop points due to an og.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Over here in the US the pundits are questioning why teams are celebrating like crazy when they get a result to get them to 4 points. I don’t know if it is the same in the UK? They are celebrating because of the way the tournament is set up with 4 of the 6 3rd placed teams going through. It means that 4 points almost guarantees that the teams progress. The teams know it, but the pundits are keeping quiet. Maybe they want to continue the drama and have been told to keep schtum on the significance of 4 points.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Kimtoon: did you watch it? There was a Hungary player directly behind the Icelander who would have scored anyway. I don’t think anyone in Iceland will blame their player.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Eric, was dipping in and out mate as seeing to Lew. The free kick at the end was close too, wanted it to go in so I could write sigga sig ahh . Yes I know they sang it with a z but you get my drift. To be fair the Pen they got was a bit soft like so I guess a points not bad.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Just not enough attacking from Iceland in the second half. They don’t look to have too much going forward. Good effort though. Hungary wasted a lot of chances and don’t look to be much of a force. I like Spain to win it. They look tremendous again now.
GeordieTwo(Quote)
Too bad about Armstrong. I hope the injury is not too serious. Our payroll is a shocker. Around 75M? A lot of waste in that but we’ve already started to shed players like Obertan, Marveaux and Saylor. That should take more than 5M a year off. Sale of players like Sissoko, Wijnaldum and Janmaat would remove another 130-140K a week or about 7M pounds. Still a whopping wage bill for a Championship club.

Shamrock(Quote)
G2: it is pretty easy to fix though if we can make a profit on player trading and use that to offset wages for the one year we expect to be in The Championship. I don’t think they are worried considering how profitable NUFC was when in the PL. Now if we miss promotion then they might worry. I just cannot see that happening though.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
This might be karma for Ronaldo 🙂 Doubt it as Portugal have better players.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
good stop by the keeper from Ronaldo there
Kimtoon(Quote)
Yeah was a good shot. The good thing about the Euros is the mix of ability in the players in each team. Austria have a couple of very string players but a couple really weak ones. Their right winger is getting owned by the Portugal full back. At PL level it’s all much of a muchness and quite full a lot of the time.
Shamrock(Quote)
Boy does that Austrian strip look like a German one.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Can’t believe this game is still 0.0
Kimtoon(Quote)
I was thinking that earlier. You would think they would want to stand out with their own identity… their flag is mostly red…
Shamrock(Quote)
Dive.
Shamrock(Quote)
No way!
Shamrock(Quote)
*** he’s only gone and missed the pen 😆
Kimtoon(Quote)
Ronnie is avin a mare
Kimtoon(Quote)
Don’t tell me Euro 2016 is rubbish. Have not enjoyed footy this much in years!
Shamrock(Quote)
After what Ronaldo did to Gunarsson a few days back he deserves a night like this.
Shamrock(Quote)
Austria have worked so hard, not giving up on any loose balls and breaking their attacks down quite well considering
Kimtoon(Quote)
Yep the Ronnie missed pen defo a highlight for me. 😀
Kimtoon(Quote)
Hahahahahahahah
Shamrock(Quote)
And now he’s offside 😆
Kimtoon(Quote)
C’mon Austria
Kimtoon(Quote)
Ronnie looks well peeved
Kimtoon(Quote)
Well done Austria. Good game.
Shamrock(Quote)
And there you have it, wow, who would of thought 0.0
Kimtoon(Quote)
Sham, I enjoyed that.
Kimtoon(Quote)
Well, I like Ronaldo because he is so brilliant but it is also funny to see his face when it doesn’t go his way.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Yeah Kim that was quality just to see Ronaldo suffer. In case anybody missed it, when Iceland secured their first ever point in an international competition against Portugal last week, their Captain approached Ronaldo and asked if they could swap shirts? Ronaldo responded with; ‘who are you?’
Arrogant sod.
Shamrock(Quote)
Sham: are they even allowed to swap shirts? I have not seen much of that at all. I think they might have banned it.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Mind you, if they haven’t banned shirt swapping on the field then Ronny has gone down a lot in my estimation. He had to realise he was playing against players that would see him as a God and would be in awe of being on the same field as him.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
These Euros have been awful. Not really enjoyed any of the games. I’ve barely watched it, to be honest.
Also, it is worrying we haven’t really made any moves to get players yet. I know its mid-June but pre-season isn’t that far away and the earlier start in the Championship makes fast movement more of a priority.
funkyjesus(Quote)
FJ: how do you know the Euros have been awful if you have “barely watched it” 🙂
In the least unexpected news, Rosicky is injured and is out of the tournament. Please nobody ever bring up his name as a free agent for NUFC.
Eric Sykes(Quote)
The bits I have seen. I’ve seen about 3 games worth combined, maybe. It’s been horrid. Nothing near the quality of previous tournaments. When Italy are one of the more attacking teams, you know it is a **** show.
funkyjesus(Quote)
The Euros have been excellent so far. Plenty of drama. Plucky minnow teams digging in for results, a few cracking goals and Ronaldo learning a bit of humility soon I think. Great stuff. I have watched at least a game a day so far and highlights of all other matches.
Eric, I think they swap in the changing rooms now mate. His response was in the pitch though. Humiliating for the Icelandic fella.
Shamrock(Quote)
To be honest I think the euro’s have been better than I thought they would be, a lot of the so called smaller side’s giving it their all and a few unexpected results.
FJ are you pissed cause Scotland never made it ????
Big Dave(Quote)
Sham and Kim yeah Ronaldo deserves to be fuked of he is such an arrogant c@nt with a massive ego, and I am so glad that the media are turning against him because of the **** he came out with about Iceland
Big Dave(Quote)
I heard from a friend in France that security is way over the top, with stormtroopers all over the place with submachine guns, and bag searches and body frisking at about 3 places before going into the ground. He reckons that they must have the flares up their arses to get them in – or somebody on the inside gets them in for them.
Some of the games have been pretty average. The Italy v Sweden game was woeful. All in all, though, it’s all about as exciting as any other tournament – highs, lows, good football, good goals, sloppy play, intensity, periods where nothing happens. That’s football – at all levels of the game.
Brisvegas(Quote)
Bris, that’s what I don’t understand, some reports are saying security is tight and others that it’s lax. One thing is for sure, it’s a big concern that those flares got in, I cannot think how they did it. Your suggestion, albeit a joke, is highly unlikely but the thought of someone on the inside supplying them is equally worrying.
