Cardiff 0-0 Newcastle: A woeful display on so many levels

On a day where we should’ve been targeting a comfortable three points, we’ve ended up crawling over the line against a newly promoted Cardiff – in a game that has to go down as one of the most frustrating watches as a Newcastle United fan.

Quite incredibly, our 10 men could and should have won it late one, only for Kenedy to see his tame 96th minute penalty saved. How he was allowed to take it after such a dreadful display is beyond me.

We deserved nothing from that. Us taking a point will be bad enough if you’re a Cardiff fan, so the fact we very nearly took all three is quite unbelievable really.

It was an absolutely shocking first half. So many cheap free kicks and corners (which was infuriating given this would’ve clearly been identified as their best route to a goal) so little options on the ball, a lack of intensity and a total lack of quality.

Manquillo was dreadful (and was hauled off by Rafa at the break), Diame wasn’t nearly as influential as we’ve seen recently, Perez was woeful and an isolated Joselu frustrated. That being said, it’s unfair to pick out too many individuals when the collective performance was WAY below what we showed against Spurs last Saturday.

Our first half was perhaps summed up by the fact Kenedy had failed to complete a single pass in 45 minutes of action (the first Premier League player to do this since 2010)  – and he should’ve seen red after kicking out at Victor Camarasa!

It could only get better in the second half – but it got worse.

We showed no urgency, lacked intensity and our discipline was non existent – which was summed up by Isaac Hayden’s reckless challenge that saw him sent off with 25 minutes left on the clock. He may be frustrated that a move hasn’t materialised, but it was idiotic. Both he, Kenedy and Manquillo could’ve seen red.

With City, Chelsea and Arsenal up next, it’s fair to say our performance level will have to be upped considerably if we want to avoid an absolute towelling or two.

A woeful and worrying display, but at least it’s a point!

Before we start getting carried away with talk of Anita, I think it’s worth noting that he couldn’t get a regular game for Championship side Leeds last season and hasn’t even been given a shirt number for this season. Maybe Rafa saw what Leeds have now seen?

Stu – I’m not too fussed about Leeds mate, we don’t know the reasons around what went on there.
The fact is that he played well for us, and he would be back up to Yedlin and Manquillo is now – but in my opinion would be better than Manq.

one good thing Kenedy did y/day,ran into the crowd and gave a young lady a toon shirt with no9 Rondon on,pity she didnt put it on and play she could not do any worse than him ffs

Ice – that was Rondon himself that done that mate. The lass was a fellow Venezuelan

  4. Anita was pretty much always good at RB, it was mf where he was found wanting at times. He worked hard in the gym to bulk up .

Jesus what a soft penalty that is , I bloody hate that Fellani

I am going to have read of the Manchester Guardian comments page on the game. The scousers have got 25 years of pent up aggression over the Man U smugness.

  7. So I read about 100 comments on the Guardian match report and not a single one was from a Man U supporter. I have read Man U Guardian reports when they were doing well and they were only too happy to gloat and rile up Scousers. It seems that what I thought all along is true. They are fair weather fans. Plastics.

I saw the Mackems won and if that continues it won’t be long before they are crowing with absolutely no self awareness of their team being in the 3rd division.

  8. The Kenedy kick out has been shown that much this weekend, do you think the review board will even bother putting the DVD in or will they just bell Rafa – or do they even need to do that really?! ??‍♂️

  9. Probably not Sharpy. I expect he’ll get the three games ban. It was a very odd thing to do. Either he really didn’t intend it or it was the most blatant kick out I’ve ever seen. Either way Warnock showed every one else how to play the kid – just be on his back every time he receives the ball (which to be fair he hardly ever did.)

  10. Kennedy can’t play next week anyway. So he’s likely to miss Chelsea, Forest in the cup and Arsenal isn’t he?

He’s young, inconsistent and relatively inexperienced so you get good games and bad games with the odd tempestuous moment. Makes it more bizarre that we put all our quality eggs in his basket.

      (Quote)

  11. Chris Waugh is actually good for something today. His article says that if Kenedy is banned then the Chelsea game and the Forest game count towards any 3 match ban. That would mean he would only miss the City league game. Since I expect us to lose that, this is the best possible scenario if indeed he is banned.

I know a lot of people have given him stick for Saturday’s performance but he was probably our best player against Spurs. Some NUFC fans have the memory of gnats and it was only in the summer they said we should go all out to sign Kenedy permanently for most of the sell-to-buy money.

      (Quote)

  12. So Gayle has already won 3 penalties for the Baggies. He should have had at least that many for us last year if the Refs were not so biased. He probably would have converted them as well.

I saw an update at the bottom of that article saying there would be no retrospective ban for Kenedy… anyone else see that? I’ve not seen anything else to confirm it though…

  14. I’m pleased but just don’t get it. The ref had blown for a foul before the kick out. It wasn’t the foul that could have got the ban anyway.

  15. I am not sticking up for Kenedy because he did have a bad game but Perez was also out of sorts and any pass to Joselu bounced off him. Ritchie was also quiet for the same reasons as well as covering for Manquillo. It is hard to think of anybody that played well, but Dubravka, Lascelles, Clark and Shelvey probably scratched sixes out of ten. A terrible game all round from us and the opposition. Nil-nil was a fitting and correct result.

Eric – Kenedy was fucking awful on Saturday mate, penalty miss and kick out aside, he didn’t complete a single pass in the first half!!.
That said, I’m sure it was just one of those days where everything that could go wrong, went wrong.
Doesn’t mean I’ve turned my back on the kid.
I’ve criticised Rafa for Saturday too, doesn’t mean I’ve forgot all the good he’s done, or want him to leave though.

I just don’t believe that for a second – are we honestly meant to believe that we bid £20m for one player when the whole window was a total of around £20m spend?!?!!!

    Until I see a copy of a fax offering Nice £20m – I call bull ****.

Plea’s hattrick for Gladbach was against a 5th division side in the Cup. Can’t read anything into that.

  23. I forgot about this. On the US commentary Lee Dixon said Sarri might need a *** at half time. They had him come on after the match and issue an apology saying it meant something different in Britain. For some reason he didn’t say that it was slang for cigarette. Very weird, I would have thought that about 90% of Yanks would know that.

  28. This is something I never thought I would say: WELL DONE DENNIS WISE.

Dennis Wise has blocked some Newcastle fans on Twitter. Whether he just doesn’t want to listen to criticism or it is abuse, I don’t care he has done the right thing. Contrast this with Richard Keys who reported twitter trolls to the police. I said last week this was wasting police time and still believe it and go further and say Keys should be the one sanctioned. He should be fined, but he wont be because he has the TV bully pulpit make a pathetic defense of his pathetic actions.

I think if you get on twitter or any social media you have to accept what comes with the territory. There are always going to be stupid trolls just like there are always a few idiots at the local pub. Twitter emboldens these people because of the anonymity but the answer is built into the system, you block them, you don’t waste Police time unless it is a direct threat. What are they going to do get a ticket to Qatar and knock on Keys’ door?

      (Quote)

  29. Eric, Wise has blocked fans who asked him if he would be prepared to do a interview with True Faith. There’s been no abuse he’s just blocking those who he doesn’t want to answer.

      (Quote)

  30. Stuart: from what you are saying Wise is a typical bully and can dish it out but can’t take it. I still wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t some abusive tweets and that was my main point that they could be blocked and Keys is a **** for reporting them to the Police.

Is it true that Wise vandalized that Blue Peter Garden? That was probably before Stuart’s time but I remember they were very proud of that garden. They were adding an Italian sunken garden with a water feature if my memory is correct.

  31. Eric – my sister is a cop in Northumbria mate and if it helps they take a ‘sticks and stones’ approach to online trolling. It may get reported to the police but unless there are threats to kill or racist/terrorist type remarks, they will generally advise people to block comments – it’s only when people carry on and it becomes a harassment that further action is take – but from the outset it’s what can YOU do to stop this happening

Sharpy: I am probably overreacting because Keys said he reported it to the Police and said he expected action soon. He has the platform to press his point though and knowing him he will if the Police do not follow up.

Yet another reason for me to dislike Keys and Gray and the fact they let Wise spout off as well makes it all seem like there is a plan here (Bishop?). Allardyce was sacked by Ashley so probably still has some antipathy towards him, although the Fatman did say he regretted sacking him so he may be hoping for a second bite at the cherry.

I am not sure if I could take that, if Rafa walks and is replaced by Toad of Toad Hall. Probably too expensive for Ashley though. He was desperate when he hired Rafa and Freddy Shepperd hired Allardyce.

      (Quote)

  33. I mentioned Allardyce because he, Wise, Keys and Gray were all on the same BEin Sports show discussing Rafa, Ashley and NUFC. All you would need for a total biased set up is to add Martin Samuel. Now that would be a total clownshow of the biggest pontificating blowhards in football. If I was Rafa I would wear it as a badge of honour that that lot do not like me.

  36. I wonder if Schteve will tell QPR fans to judge him after 10 games because I am here to tell them it doesn’t get any better? I read The Guardian match report and here are a few highlights:

    * QPR have lost their 1st 4 games.

    * Schteve felt it necessary to apologize in the programme notes after the 7-1 mauling at WBA. This is after 3 games FFS.

    * In the after match interview The Guardian refer to Schteve as “sporting that familiar half dazed expression”. We don’t even need to see the interview or a picture because we know exactly what they mean and the players must see it as well. They also see it on the sideline along with the defeated “don’t ask me what to do” body language. It would not exactly instill confidence.

    * And… in the 4th game of the season, at home, the QPR fans joined the Bristol fans singing “You’re getting sacked in the morning”. Schteve replied “That’s society now, it’s an instant reaction”. No it is not Schteve. That is a reaction of fans who are well aware of your previous record and I am sure they never wanted you in the first place. It is even worse than when you came to NUFC because they now have evidence of failure here and at Derby. Has nothing to do with society, facebook or twitter and everything to do with the fact that you are ****.

georgio: did you watch their “finest hour”? I watched in a bar in Chicago and Bayern should have been 5-0 up before the come back (great escape). Nobody really remembers that they were totally outplayed, they only remember the result. It was a good team though and had a bad day, which turned out to a lucky day.

McClaren’s last jobs have been, I think:

    Wolfsburg
    Twenty revisited (sacked)
    Derby
    NUFC
    Derby
    Forest
    Macabi Telaviv consultant
    QPR

His recent record of failure is rivalling Pardew. Usually Pards at least has a good 1st year, except for WBA.
