Despite an impressive season in France, ex-Mag Hatem Ben Arfa is on the lookout for another club after being released by Rennes.
Club president Olivier Létang has praised his contribution over the past year, but claims he now needs to ‘look elsewhere’ to ‘enjoy his football’, with them clearly coming to a mutual agreement to let him leave now his contract has expired.
According to Ouest-France, Ben Arfa’s representatives have held talks with La Liga trio Sevilla, Real Betis and Espanyol over a potential move, while Turkish giants Besiktas have also been linked.
The enigmatic Frenchman is now 32, but showed several moments of brilliance last season, bagging 9 goals and 6 assists, tearing Arsenal apart in the Europa League and inspiring Rennes to Coupe de France glory.
He was the fifth best dribbler in Europe last season – behind the likes of Messi and Hazard – however it seems Rennes decided not to extend his contract, meaning he’s now a free agent once again.
Many Mags will urge the club to make a move to bring Hatem back to St James’ Park, but it well and truly feels like that ship has now sailed – especially if Rafa Benitez remains in charge.
Good luck Hatem – one of the most exciting talents I’ve seen at St James’ Park, but a player who could’ve achieved so much more with the right attitude.
