Keith Downie confirms imminent new signing has completed medical at Newcastle United

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has confirmed in the last few moments that Jeff Hendrick has undergone a medical at Newcastle United, with imminent arrival now ‘close’ to completion.

The 28-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Tyneside for a few weeks now, with the move said to be at an advanced stage for several days, however it looks like he’ll be unveiled at some point today.

Here’s what Downie’s had to say, with Sky Sports stating that he’s now putting the ‘finishing touches’ to his move to St James’ Park:

“Jeff Hendrick has undergone a medical at Newcastle and is close to completing his move.

“The Republic of Ireland international was a free agent after leaving Burnley.”

Hendrick will become Steve Bruce’s second summer signing, following on from the arrival of former Motherwell goalkeeper Mark Gillespie.

The former Burnley midfielder’s arrival may not excite fellow Newcastle fans, however I expect him to be a solid addition to our squad and feel like he’s a shrewd signing.

After all, saving money on a deal like this – opposed to spending a few million on a fee and big wages for Bentaleb – could be key in allowing us to actually spend money on a decent striker.

Let’s hope we can make some big moves for a much needed striker and left-back once this one’s made official!

  1. It might not excite, but it should certainly please.
Hendrick is a solid player with a wealth of experience. He may not be a match winner, but he strengthens our midfield and him and Hayden will be a very solid pairing imo.

Having players like this allows the match winners to focus on offence rather than having to drop deeper.

But it won’t matter if we remain reliant on Joelinton getting the goals I’m afraid.
