Two names have been linked with possible moves to St James’ Park today – and not for the first time either.
The duo are OGC Nice star Wylan Cyprien – a long-term target who’s set to be available on the cheap according to reports – and Inter Milan’s Joao Mario.
Starting in France, L’Equipe claim that we’ve been ‘alerted’ by Nice dropping their asking price down to €10m for midfielder Wylan Cyprien.
The Chronicle have regularly reported on our interest in the 25-year-old, so this one could be one to watch – if Bruce is in the market for another midfielder, that is.
He’d be a no-brainer at that price when we still lack that mobile and explosive box-to-box midfielder.
If it’s true that we’ll be offered the chance to sign him at that price having been alerted by his availability, we’ll have to hope Allan Saint-Maximin gets on the phone to his former Nice teammate!
As for Joao Mario, Portuguese outlet O Jogo claim we are one of several Premier League clubs who have ‘made an approach’ for the dynamic midfielder.
Leeds and West Ham are also understood to be vying for his signature, alongside multiple La Liga sides, with the former Hammers loanee available on loan or at a fee of £13m after falling out of favour under Antonio Conte.
The 27-year-old announced himself on the world stage in Portugal’s winning Euro 2016 campaign. He then went on to seal a £35 million move to the Inter, but has struggled at the San Siro and could be a useful addition given his ability to play anywhere in midfield.
It’s said our priority is to add a centre-back and striker over the coming fortnight, but these *might* just be two ones to watch after regularly being linked with a move to Tyneside in recent years.

Got to be an upgrade on our hopeless, uncreative and slow midfield. Sell Shelvey and Hayden and it should be enough to bring in these two without making an outlay. This should still leave cash for a striker and central defender.
As for this kid Vilca, why can’t we bring in more cheap options for our youth team and reserves from places like South America and Africa? Other clubs seem to unearth them… oh sorry our recruitment team are all still on furlough until after the window closes. Silly me!!
