According to Football Insider, Southampton are now in talks with Newcastle United over a surprise deadline-day deal for DeAndre Yedlin.
After struggling to move on the out of favour American all summer, it would come as quite a surprise to see him end up at Premier League club pushing for a top 10 finish.
That said, Football Insider’s ‘exclusive’ insists that the Saints have made contact, with Ralph Hasenhuttl keen to add another right-back to his squad before the window shuts at 11pm tonight.
The deal being discussed is a loan move – not a permanent deal – despite the fact he’s out of contract next summer and will be able to leave the club on a free at the end of the season.
Elsewhere, Everton have signed Norwich’s Ben Godfrey for £20m.
Newcastle were linked with the centre-back earlier in the summer and The Athletic revealed last week that we’d made an enquiry and ‘asked for a price’.
Back to Yedlin, I’m struggling to see how a move to Southampton would work.
They play good football so I don’t quite see how he fits into their ball-playing side, not to mention the side he wouldn’t get in their side above Kyle Walker-Peters – meaning the first-team football he clearly craves wouldn’t even be guaranteed at St Mary’s.
He’s one to watch today, along with Atsu, Saivet, Aarons and Saivet, however I’d be surprised if Southampton brought him in on loan!
