Newcastle 1-1 Wolves: Injuries, errors & missed chances makes draw feel like a defeat

A tough one to take on a few fronts, with Newcastle being held 1-1 by Wolves at St James’ Park tonight.

Jamaal Lascelles gave us the lead seven minutes into the second half , however Martin Dubravka couldn’t get a strong enough hand to keep out a Ruben Neves header he should have done better with.

Newcastle started absolutely fantastically and were in control of the match until Saint-Maximin’s forced substitution, with the big worry coming out of this one being the fact both he and Miguel Almiron hobbled off.

The only consolation from this result is that we can’t drop into the relegation spot if Fulham beat Crystal Palace but this is a hard result to take as Newcastle pick up their 5th draw of the season.

We were handed a tremendous opportunity to swap places with Brighton in the firing line after the south-coast side lost 1-0 away to West Brom. Though the result meant that another relegation zone team had gained points on us, it kept Brighton just one point above us and presented us with the opportunity to leapfrog them.

Despite their unusually low position in the league, Wolves were on an unbeaten run of four matches in the lead up to this match meaning that the difficulty of the match wasn’t as simple as a lower half clash.

Team news brought only one change with Martin Dubravka reclaiming his number one spot from Karl Darlow. Hope from the fanbase was that Dubravka would be able to marshal his defence more and hopefully shore up some of the wobbly performances.

Joelinton recovered from his back injury that forced him off in the match against Manchester United and Jonjo Shelvey was readying himself for a match full of running.

As for Wolves, they stuck with the same team that beat Leeds 1-0 in their previous match.

The game started in a lively fashion and Miguel Almiron had a fantastic opportunity to score from a tight angle in the 11th minute – only to see his side footed effort clip the post!

A big chance missed, but we’d started with the required energy to dominate the game with a massive 74% possession at one point.

Both Krafth and Joelinton unleased powerful shots at the goalkeeper but unfortunately hitting him straight on.

Saint-Maximin had the ball in the net after a fantastic combination with Willock but was unfortunately offside. Perhaps Willock should have scored before Saint-Maximin had his opportunity.

Wolves grew into the game before the break, with Traore beating Krafth with ease and drawing both Hayden and Clark into cynical fouls that saw both got into the book. Neto also fired wide from a Traore cut-back, proving that the visitors looked capable of causing us real trouble if either of their wide men were given freedom to run at our back line.

The first half was generally a good one but the lack of a goal after so much domination was worrying. Almiron and Saint-Maximin definitely seemed up for the match but the lack of Callum Wilson’s goalmouth potency was really clear.

The question raised after the half-time whistle was whether we could keep up the same intensity and convert our attacking intent?

The second half started with Ryan Fraser replacing Miguel Almiron after our star Paraguayan took a knock. Hopefully this was a precautionary switch.

LASCELLES!!! Fantastic work from Saint-Maximin and then a great cross from Ryan Fraser for our captain to guide the ball into the corner of the net with a fantastic header!

This was exactly what was needed after a good first half without a goal and this was the sort of forward momentum Newcastle should be attempting in every half of every match.

Saint-Maximin went down with what looked like a groin injury with 30 minutes left. Jacob Murphy replaced him and, like with Almiron, fans were left hoping that this was precaution more than a big injury. A big blow for the match as Saint-Maximin was one of the most dangerous players on the pitch.

Emil Krafth also started to struggle with a knock and was replaced by Matt Ritchie on the 70th minute. With Krafth injured, Newcastle now have no fit natural right-backs.

There seems to be a shift in player positions when substitutions could have simply been like for like. I’m not sure that this is a positive sign and we conceded soon after.

After Neto crossed in from the right, a Ruben Neves header was tipped into the side netting by Dubravka at the end of a Wolves counter-attack. A bad goal to concede and bitter blow.

Somehow, we don’t score as Joelinton strikes from inside the box after fantastic work by Jacob Murphy, but it hits Saiss and goes over the bar. That should have been 2-1 and I’m not quite sure how we didn’t score. Extremely unlucky, but another ‘missed’ opportunity.

A super save then arrived from Dubravka in extra time, with him somehow tipping a point-blank header onto the bar. He should’ve saved their goal, but he made up for it with that one!

Full time and Newcastle are forced to feel lucky with the point despite being the better team for a majority of the match. This is a gut punch of a result.

I predicted a draw before the match but with the way we played and the injuries picked up, this result feels like a loss.

  1. Jake Jackman: I dont rate Joelinton at all but thought Saturday was his best game for us. 9 times out of 10 that shot goes in. The ball wasnt bouncing off him in general play as it usually does either and he got into the box. He needs MANY more performances like that for me to believe he should ever start. Maybe as a sub when we are a goal to the good. Play the role of Joeselu except at a 35 million greater transfer fee.

I just watched WBA and BHA. WBA have a long throw specialist and that and corners seem to be their only tactic. We need Carroll and Dummett. There’s plenty of time for Lewis to come good but he needs taking out of the firing line for now.

  2. I am not on twitter but see it sometimes in articles. What is classed as ABUSE? Jake Jackman said Joelinton suffered abuse. I have called him Donkey-Joe and the Brazilian Donkey on here. Is that abuse? I would call it realism.

I have also watched Wraith’s youtube and he often talks about blocking people for abuse. They must really go over the top.

I dont think it can be racist or death threats as the Police are all over that. You would have to be some kind of moron to put something like that in writing on twitter or in a letter to Bruce.

  3. So the update that Olly posted says Miggy is in no pain and already running. I said a few times earlier on here that they were overreacting, especially Bruce. I watched the incident quite a few times and knew that he wasnt badly injured. Bruce based his OVERreaction purely on Miggy getting emotional whereas fans know he is emotional.

Yet more evidence that Bruce does not know what he is doing and wanted to get his excuses in early.

  4. Never believe a word Bruce and NUFC tell you – good and bad. Our medical dept are a joke. They have been so vague on Miggy and St Max. Yes, they could be back in April but that was after a 2 week international break. It said nothing about the severity of the injuries.

They are all clowns from the Drs to the physios to the coaches.

Not to gloat, but I told you so about Miggy. BRUCE OUT.

  5. NUFC will try to keep Miggy from the WC qualifiers but I dont think they can. I think he will want to play as well. I will be shocked if he is not on the bench at least for the Villa game.

  7. I keep hearing everyone saying that Fulham are in such good form, so I decided to have a look.

In their last 20 league games they have won 2 games – TWO – and one of those wins was a 1-0 against Sheff Utd.

They have only won 4 games out of the 26 played this season – 11 draws.

Let me say this – if that was NUFCs record, nobody on here would be raving about what good form NUFC were in, so I don’t get the love in for Fulham or this thought that they are in form and most likely to play themselves out of relegation.

They haven’t really been hit with injuries, they did strengthen in Jan with Maja coming in up front, and they have played most of their ‘winnable’ games – only 2 games left against teams in the bottom 6 – and one is against us.

      (Quote)

  8. I thought that was him on Sunderland til I Die. His agent really dropped the Mackems in the **** coz Maja was their best player and he forced the move at Xmas.

I also reckon pubs and restaurants will be fully open in Chicago by then. I also have a trip to Maine in Mid-May and it looks like I will be able to go after I pushed it back twice after the Xmas surge.

The number of infections are about 1 third they were a month ago and are coming down fast partly due to quarantines but also the extraordinarily cold weather.

I reckon the US economy will bounce back as a lot of the food service and hotel workers are the ones laid off. The rest of the economy is now Tech and other services such as legal and finance. Its not like starting up steel mills again because there are no steel mills any more.

The irony of this is the Takeover stalled because of the issue of shadow directors being tested yet a major NUFC decision has been taken this morning by a individual not listed as a employee at NUFC and who’s not been identified by the PL as a shadow director.

To underline how significant this blow is, I’m told this morning all #nufc takeover conversations have been halted by Justin Barnes and the club is, effectively, no longer for sale. Everything paused until relegation matters decided. twitter.com/telegraphsport…

  11. I am sure Bruce will be asked about the injuries and I am going to give him a pass on his answer as long as he also says that we have other good players to cover. He has been very tetchy recently and that may be results or may be that he thinks he has been undermined by the arrival of Graeme Jones. He cannot deny that we have played better though and also that we have pressed higher, had more possession and even tried new set piece routines.

It needed a refresh although I would not blame Bruce at all in thinking they are shoving him out the door one foot at a time. THEY ARE. The Steves have grown stale and have no ideas if they ever had any to begin with. He has dragged them around with him for years and it shows. It reminds me so much of Ugly John Carver where he really had no ideas at the end and just tried the same thing over and over. Much like Shelvey taking corners and free kicks until Jones arrived.

Shelvey still took a couple against Wolves but they were not what the opposition expected. They were short or layoffs to change the angle. I would let him share with Fraser if this is still the approach. We just have to mix it up a bit as I bet we are the worst in the league at set pieces apart from maybe Sheffield and West Brom because they dont score any goals from anywhere. Maybe Brighton for the same reason.

That’s good, Eric. Vaccines going at a pace in US and in the UK. Although the data over here is getting better and faster than the scientists predicted we are still slow to open up the economy. The vaccine is have a clear impact.

  14. They had Luke Edwards on the BBC podcast yesterday and he really does believe that NUFC will stay up. It is partly the team but I got the impression that he believes in Steve Bruce. This is a journalist of 20 years. What does he see in Bruce that we dont?

I always thought he was sucking up but I think he really believes Bruce is a good manager. Really strange. It is like Trump believing his own lies.

Good, gets me to the front of the queue quicker.

I also saw a virus specialist on TV this morning say it takes 2 weeks for you to develop the antibodies AFTER the vaccine. I had never seen anybody mention that before.

  16. Eric, they say between 14-21 days for the maximum antibodies over here but they also say you start producing anti bodies within days but not enough until the 14-21 days. But the evidence now is clear that just one jab gives significant protection for at least 3 months.

His pundit pals are still with him but that is a golf and dinner party club. Have you ever listened to the BBC football podcast, all ex-players larking around not asking any serious questions of each other or guests because they are all in this old boys’ club.

I gave Bruce until his first Xmas and then said he would relegate us this year.

I said the moment Jones stepped through the door that he was caretaker in waiting because it was obvious. It was also obvious that Bruce had no say in it. It has now all bubbled up because the players can see so easily how bad the coaching was under the 3 Steves.

      (Quote)

  20. We all knew that Bruce wasnt the nice guy he and his Pals liked to portray. We had seen that he wasnt from comments form fans at other clubs he had managed – especially the Mackems and Villa. I have been calling it a facade but everybody on here saw through it.

I also said that Pardew must have left his Big Book of Excuses in the office and Steve picked it up. Now I think they are joint authors of the 2nd edition.

I find it ironic with Bruce being such a duplicitous b@stard that the players are going behind HIS back in their Whatsapp groups.

We had all also asked what the Steves actually did in training. Turns out to F-all because in 3 weeks Jones has changed our system of play and set pieces.

It was obvious this would happen when Jones was appointed over Bruce’s head. We all knew there would be factions develop because that is the way it always works. I just wonder if there will be anybody left on Bruce’s side? Certainly not the Longstaffs or Darlow.

There was also something fishy about St Max going back to France.

Gayle has looked totally miserable. That is not about his contract situation, I bet it is because of Bruce p!ssing him about.

      (Quote)

  21. I dont understand why a payoff matters in sacking Bruce. The obvious counter is that Ashley will lose at least 100 mil if we are relegated. But, you also get 3 mil for each place you finish above 20th in the league. So if a new man could get us from 17th to 16th that’s more than enough to pay off Bruce. Not a guarantee, but nobody can argue the players have underperformed under Bruce which should allow us to move up the table. It is still congested down there so 15th is not out of the question.

      (Quote)

  22. Then there’s Ritchie. Perhaps he has been waiting for this. They gave him a new contract and then tried to cart him off to Championship club Bournemouth. Then Bruce didnt play him, putting in Lewis who had been in rocky form ahead of him. Or even Joelinton!

Ritchie had also played with Fraser at B’mth I think. Or at least had an affinity playing for the same 2 clubs. Bruce had p!ssed him around as well. Do you think the players dont talk? There were rumours that Fraser was mad as well.

Bruce had also been saying that he was unlucky because he couldnt get his best players on the field at the same time. This was pretty much a lie apart from St Max. It was that he didnt pick them. The players know this and know he is lying. He picked Joelinton ahead of both Ritchie and Fraser FFS and even Miggy earlier in the season.

  25. Eric – I disagree mate. There are weasels like Simon Jordan who sing the praises of Bruce, but then there are also the likes of Big Al who’s opinion I have a lot more time for.
I don’t think this is all down to Bruce being a sh!thouse or a charlatan.
This feels more like a man who got his dream job & it went wrong – Big Al warned him of the potential of this & warned him against going for the job, but he understandably took it.

I don’t think he’s a very good manager anyway, but as we agreed earlier this week – I’d he had the team playing the way we are now for the whole season, we’d likely be safe already.
If he’d had the team playing this way the whole season the vast majority of the fans would be fine with that & accept it (imo).

It’s my belief that he got too emotionally involved with the continuous Rafa references and set the team up to try and ‘out Rafa’ Rafa. I think if he’d played that way and got more points, he could justify he was as good as or better than Rafa (in his mind). That’s the only thing I can think of to explain why he spent most of the season playing so defensive.

Whatever the reason, it backfired badly & we fine ourselves in a very precarious position & very much in a relegation battle.
Bruce is now like a wounded animal & seems to be lashing out – but I don’t think that necessarily makes him a bad bloke.

It’s just all gone horribly wrong at the club, again!!. The Bruce situation is only part of a club that’s in a serious mess at the moment – and with an owner who simply doesn’t care.

      (Quote)

  26. All that said, I think he was wrong to single Ritchie out – I don’t think it was a personal issue he has with Ritchie, more said in the moment really – but wrong all the same.

Equally though, I don’t like Lascelles interview either really. As club captain he should know & do better than that. Don’t fuel the media and deal with it in the dressing room.

Because – that goal was not down to mixed messages. Hayden was in the position he was meant to be in.
It was down to poor defending & bad goalkeeping – of which Lascelles was part of.

Georgio – yeah we need to be careful with Jones the survivor craic as well mate.
I know Bruce has done really badly – but the last coach that took charge – Carver.
We may all think ‘this can’t get any worse’ – but we all know it can!!.

If you look at Jones credentials, there is nothing to suggest he can come in and be a success. His biggest boast is that he coached with Belgium under Martinez.
But if NUFC brought Martinez in as manager, I don’t think many fans would be blown away – so we really should pin too many hopes on his former coach.

I would not have Jones as Manager but they needed to switch the tactics and have a caretaker in waiting as all the Steves would leave together. I have no evidence, but I think this was down to Carr. He is the only one with any football knowledge that has access to Ashley. Rafa was the one who pushed him out (deservedly after he and Charnley appointed McClaren)but I dont think he ever fell out with the Fat Man.

Judging by what Jones did at Luton you would only want him in for 1 game whilst you went for someone better. Who? Who knows?

I did read that when Jones was hired that he was given the assurance he would stay on until the end of the season whatever happened manager wise.

    What does Ritchie bring?

    tenacity
    he can cross
    he is vocal
    he is an organizer
he can shoot and get the odd goal

I am not sure if I would start him, but he has to be an option. We have to get Lewis out of the firing line and more than likely Murphy or Joelinton will be ineffective if they start. That has been the pattern all season when they start, one or the other just doesnt show up.

  31. Before all of this kerfuffle I hadnt really thought about Ritchie and what he brings. I had thought we would get out of this with our skill players and a change in tactics. Now we are in a dog fight and Ritchie is the type that can help us. Same with Fraser if he can control himself.

Even as small as they are I would choose them to have my back over Joelinton and Lewis. The alternatives!!!

Not slagging off Lewis. This is just not the situation for a young lad in his in his first season who is more of a wing back than full back.

Eric – I’m not being negative toward Jones, I’m sure he’s a prefectly reasonable coach – but so many people have got carried away with him it’s madness.
This suggestion that all of our changes came about when he came in – 1. Simply isnt true & 2. If it was the case he could have such an impact – he’d be at a far bigger club than NUFC.

Also, this suggestion that he’s been brought in to undermine Bruce & try to force him out – it’s all a bit too cloak & dagger for me to buy into it.
But if it were the case & he was knowingly part of it – surely that calls into question the character of the man doesn’t it?.

Lewis is a wing back imo, not a full back. He’s not strong enough defensively to play in a back 4 at the moment – he’s young and could develop, but I think Dummett left and Manquillo right in a back 4.

But Ibe wasn’t doing it so they brought Fraser back in & he was up there with Hazard stats wise. He played really well until the end of the season.
Then Howe went and brought in Harry Wilson from Lpool and dropped Fraser again without speaking to him – he was just left out.
It was his final year of his contract & the club kept him waiting – just p!ssing him off further.
Then Wilson wasn’t really working out & Howe turned to Fraser again – with a handful of games left & no talk of a contract if he helped keep them up.

Does it even sound plausible that Bruce would admit that he and the coaches that he had dragged around for years and years from job to job were so incompetent that they needed a whole new approach and that the new guy hired from a Championship club would be installed above his friends?

It really just makes no sense and sounds like Bruce is covering up and telling his story to the Journo he knows will listen and believe – Luke Edwards. Before this broke, Edwards was defending Bruce on a BBC podcast on Monday night.

Bruce has pissed off most of the journos with any integrity and all he is left with is his puppy Luke Edwards who is actually quite a vicious little puppy when it comes to everything but Uncle Steve.

  42. Read The Mag and Ed’s and a lot are wondering about preparations for the WBA game. Bruce gave the players Sun and Mon off and they are off today as well. With so many injuries, wouldnt you want to drill the incoming players? This is in addition to us having a new first team coach implementing a new strategy as well as set piece routines.

I doubt they really need to work on fitness this late in the season but wouldnt you want to have them do warm ups, stretches and warm downs given our injuries, most have which have been pulls and muscle tweaks. At the very least I would have Graeme Jones in the video room going through BFS’s tactics and also going over our own tactics. He has only had a month FFS, that is nowhere near enough to get the 3 Steves’ drivel out of their heads.

The players cant go anywhere anyway. What else they going to do? Spend the day on play station. I dont mind 2 days off after the game but this is a bit of a joke to have today off totally. They could have them in at 10, do 2 hours, have lunch, go home and watch tonights games.

  44. I see what you saying bud, but the guy was being paid to play for his club. He should have stepped up when called upon.

Sharpy17: Sham – Fraser at Bmth.He was playing and doing ok – then they spent a fortune on Ibe from Lpool.
But Ibe wasn’t doing it so they brought Fraser back in & he was up there with Hazard stats wise.He played really well until the end of the season.
Maybe he did spit his dummy, but loyalty is a 2 way thing really isn’t it?!.

  45. Sham, yeah mate we’re ok, i’m just frustrated with trying to buy a bungalow at present. Place itself is fine just dated but there is an unbelievable 63 meters of drainage underground and all of it has cracks grade 2 in them ( about 15 in total ). You would not believe how difficult it is trying to find out which are the owners responsibility and which is Wessex waters as it looks as though they are shared to a degree.
Anyway it’s been 5 weeks of pestering a not very motivated seller, remind you of anyone, lo

Know how you feel about the club, i’m finding it very hard to keep the faith lately, it’s such a ***** show, it never ends this torment.

Kimtoon: as I said above I am not that bothered about not doing full training but we have a new head coach for about a month so they should be in there today learning the system. I also think it is really important that they do structured stretching and warm ups even if it just what you see before a match. No wonder we get so many fcn injuries. You see people limbering up here before their morning jog FFS.

The Steves have been together so long that they must have skipped the new nutrition and science that basically came in with Arsene Wenger. Even BFS is big on the scientific part of fitness.

  48. I think Brucie’s warm down after a game he played was having 10 pints with Brian Robson and Norman Whiteside. Times have changed Steve.

Sham – I’ve mulled it over quite a bit before today & id be a hypocrite if I disagreed. I still can’t stand Michael Owen now for doing similar with us, so yeah, Fraser should have played.

Sorry mate, I agree with Kim, good to see you post & hope you are keeping well.
Are you still into your spear fishing?

Kim – I think he’s trying to carry favour & thinking he’s doing right by giving the players a break.
Is he trying to prevent more injuries – or are such long lay offs the cause of so many muscular injuries?!

  51. According to Eds there is a team meeting and the “leaker” is to be confronted. Is that the stupidest thing you have ever heard? What is the point of naming and shaming before one of our biggest games of the season. Why doesnt Bruce just not include him in the squad and deal with it later in person? He is a fcn idiot. Good Man Manager my ****.

  52. Sharpy, they should be in every day going over and over stuff so it sinks in, oh and Shelvey should be practicing corners and free kicks a bit more.

I agree Kim, especially where we are at the mo & the changes to the team due to injury will inevitably result in a change of playing style so get in and go over things.

  56. I thought there was a limit on how many players a PL side can loan (I thought 3) – Fulham have 7 players in on loan ?

Fulham have been on top the whole 2nd half. 80 mins.

  59. Well it’s up to us now.

We can either dwell on this BS from the Wolves game – from which we actually got a point and put in a good performance – the positives.

This meeting that is supposedly being called should be as short as – ‘right let’s forget the nonsense and pull together. Let’s take 3 points off WBA and put done space between us and Fulham’.

Fulham have Lpool & City next. We have Villa & Brighton – we could be 9 points away from them by the end of those matches. If that were the case I think it would be all but over really.

  60. If this continues this will be Liverpool’s 5th straight home loss. Can you believe that?

Then Fulham are next up at Anfield. I would normally be super confident of a Liverpool win but they are playing pretty **** tonight so far up to half time.

  61. Spurs are beatable as well Sharpy and we will have our 3 main forwards back.

I dont like Bruce so if I have the opportunity to twist the knife I will. Doesnt mean I ever want us to lose even if it means the cabbage keeps his job.

  62. I think the commentator said it was 99 years since Liverpool had lost 4 home games in a row. I wonder if they have EVER lost 5 in a row. We will find out if it happens tonight 🙂
