Fabian Schar stepped up his recovery from knee surgery with a 45-minute cameo for our U23s this afternoon.
The Swiss star returned to full training last week and has returned to action sooner than expected, with some fearing his injury in February would end his season early and rule him out of this summer’s Euros.
He came off at half-time in today’s clash with Crystal Palace’s second string – a game that saw him play alongside new signing and former RB Leipzig talent Matthew Bondswell.
Forgotten man Christian Atsu also featured and played a key role in the win, bagging a first-half assist after his perfectly weighted through ball put Adam Wilson in behind to score.
Some have questioned why the Ghanaian is getting minutes at U23 level – something that will be directly impacting the game time of other Academy prospects – however it won’t be long until he’s no longer a Newcastle United player, with his contract set to expire this summer.
As for the game itself, it ended 2-0 after Kyle Crossley doubled our lead in the 69th minute. A big win for the U23s, being just our second victory in our last nine games to move us off the foot of the Premier League 2 table.
Let’s hope Schar came through his 45 minute cameo unscathed and can return to the squad for Sunday’s clash with Arsenal at St James’ Park!
