20 Premier League free agents NUFC could sign this summer – including THREE former Mags

It’s been well documented over the past few months that we’ll be working under a limited budget this summer should Mike Ashley remain in charge of Newcastle United.

With that in mind, it’s fair to say we’ll be on the lookout for potential free agents – something we did last year in bringing Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser to St James’ Park.

Here’s a list of the Premier League players soon to be out of contract that we could well consider, along with their position and current market values (according to TransferMarkt):

  • Ryan Bertrand (Southampton – LB – £9m)
  • Romain Saïss (Wolves – CB – £9m)
  • Josh King (Everton/Bournemouth – CF – £9m)
  • Christian Benteke (Crystal Palace – ST – £8.1m)
  • Jeffrey Schlupp (Crystal Palace – LM – £8.1m)
  • Andros Townsend (Crystal Palace – RM – £7.2m)
  • Patrick Van Aanholt (Crystal Palace – LB – £7.2m)
  • John Lundstram (Sheffield United – CM – £6.3m)
  • Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace – CB – £6.3m)
  • Juan Mata (Manchester United – CAM – £5.4m)
  • Danny Welbeck (Brighton – CF – £4.5m)
  • Fabian Balbuena (West Ham – CB – £4.5m)
  • Olivier Giroud (Chelsea – ST – £4.5m)
  • Danny Rose (Tottenham – LB – £3.6m)
  • Ezgjan Alioski (Leeds – LB – £3.6m)
  • Nathaniel Clyne (Crystal Palace – RB – £3.6m)
  • Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson (Burnley – RM – £3.6m)
  • James McCarthy (Crystal Palace – CDM – £3.6m)
  • Matthew Lowton (Burnley – RB – £2.7m)
  • Kyle Bartley (West Brom – CB – £2.5m)

A relatively uninspiring list and one that contains three former NUFC loanees, although it is worth noting that The Chronicle recently reported that Andros Townsend, John Lundstram and Kyle Bartley were players on our radar heading into the summer.

Elsewhere, the likes of Josh King, Olivier Giroud and James McCarthy are all players who’ve been linked with moves to St James’ Park in the past, while Danny Welbeck is a player Bruce will know well from his time at Sunderland.

Is there any players on that list you’d like to see us look at this summer?

  1. Probably only Josh King from that list. I reckon he’d be a better option than Gayle or Carroll. I know he’s ex B’mth as well but maybe that’s good for him & Wilson ??‍♂️

  2. Aye – coz players that can’t get a contract anywhere else are what we really need to keep us up next season.

You pretty much get what you pay for.
