Ex-Mag joins Ronaldo, former Toon target & Romelu Lukaku at the top of Euro 2020 charts

Former Toon midfielder Gini Wijnaldum went joint top of the Euro 2020 goalscoring charts with his emphatic double against North Macedonia last night.

He’s in intriguing company too, with former Toon target Patrik Schick – a player we had the chance to sign for £22m last year – Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku all level on three goals each.

Back to Gini, he’s been the driving force behind a resurgent Dutch side who coasted to their third win in as many games on Monday night, handing them an emphatic start to their first major tournament since the 2014 World Cup.

A role change for his national side has seen him play further forward than what we are used to seeing him play at Liverpool – operating in the sort of advanced role that saw him bag an impressive 11 goals in his debut season at St James’ Park.

As for Schick – who scored a superb brace in Czech Republic’s opening game against Scotland – he can go top of the charts if he notches against England at Wembley tonight.

Does an ex-Toon player and a former target being top goalscorer at the Euros show that our recruitment policy isn’t as bad as supporters sometimes suggest?
