New January target revealed as Newcastle look to add Premier League experience

Newcastle United have identified Liverpool’s Nat Phillips as an early January target, according to The Telegraph.

The 6ft 3′ defender has failed to make a single start under Jurgen Klopp this season, with his only two appearances coming from the bench in the Carabao Cup and Champions League.

He filled in impressively last season when Van Dijk, Matip and Gomez all had their injury issues, playing 20 times in all competitions, however he’s struggled for game time now all three returned to full fitness.

The £36m arrival of Ibrahima Konate has also seen him slip down the pecking order this season, meaning he looks set to be available in January.

The Telegraph report that we are urgently looking for defensive reinforcements after conceding 30 goals in our opening 14 games this season.

James Tarkowski is also said to be a target, but it local reports stated just yesterday that Burnley are refusing to sell their star centre-back in the new year – especially not to a relegation rival.

So, could Phillips be the man we turn to? He’s not exactly the mobile, fleet-footed ball-player we need, however he’s dominant in the air and the sort of no nonsense defender who could make us harder to beat.

Would you see the 24-year-old as an upgrade on our current options?

  1. Definitely an upgrade!!. The kid is far better than any of our CBs – he’d be a great addition even if it’s just a loan to start with..
