NUFC star rejected shock deadline day swap deal sanctioned by Eddie Howe – Report

According to Manchester Evening News, Martin Dubravka rejected a deadline day loan move to Old Trafford.

Chief writer Samuel Luckhurst claims that Manchester United were prepared to loan Dean Henderson out to Eddie Howe, but only on the basis that Dubravka went in the other direction.

However, MEN report that the Slovakian was not interested in playing second fiddle to David De Gea and turned down the opportunity to join the Red Devils on deadline day – despite the deal being sanctioned by Eddie Howe.

Here’s a snippet from their latest piece, offering a surprise revelation from the final day of the January transfer window:

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka rejected a deadline day loan move to Manchester United.

United were prepared to accept Dubravka in exchange for Dean Henderson, whom Newcastle explored the possibility of signing on loan until the end of the season.

Newcastle loaned third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman to Bournemouth on deadline day and, mindful of interim United manager Ralf Rangnick’s wish for a back-up to replace Henderson, offered Slovakia international Dubravka on loan.

However, the goalkeeper declined the opportunity to join United as back-up to David de Gea. Dubravka started in Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Everton on Tuesday night.

Although this shows that Eddie Howe clearly isn’t sold on the Slovakian, it’s admirable on his part that he rejected the move – clearly being unwilling to sit on the bench behind an in-form De Gea.

He hasn’t been at his best this season and has struggled with injuries, but he’s followed a clean sheet at Leeds with another solid display last night.

This could be his last season between the sticks at St James’ Park, however he’s rarely let us down and may only be replaced due to his limitations when asked to play out from the back?
