Steve Nickson wants NUFC to sign 6ft 5′ striker, with Duvan Zapata now our ‘plan B’ – Report

According to The Chronicle, January target Duvan Zapata remains on Newcastle’s ‘wish-list’ – but only if we miss out on Sassuolo’s Gianluca Scamacca this summer.

Lee Ryder reports that head of recruitment Steve Nickson has been keeping a close eye on the young Italian striker and is a big fan, believing he’s a player we are now taking a serious look at.

The promising 23-year-old has 13 goals in 28 appearances in Serie A this season – averaging a goal every 117 minutes – and received his first call-up to the Italian national team just last year.

Considering Zapata turns 31 in April, a move for Scamacca could actually turn out to be better for Newcastle in the long-term.

At 6ft 5, the big yet mobile forward may add another dimension to Eddie Howe’s side, particularly with set-piece expert Kieran Trippier on corners and free-kicks.

With us needing more options up top to compete with Callum Wilson and Chris Wood next year, he could be another one to watch in the comings months, alongside the likes of Benfica’s Darwin Nunez.

Here’s a few clips of Scamacca in action this season:
