NUFC star considered for surprise World Cup call after official is spotted at St James’ Park – Report

Newcastle defender Matt Targett could be offered a call-up to the Scotland squad ahead of their World Cup play-off clash with Ukraine.

This comes from The Chronicle, who claims a Scottish official was spotted watching over him during our 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

The 26-year-old has been one of our most consistent performers since his arrival on loan from Aston Villa, leaving us likely to activate our option to sign the left-back for £15m this summer.

Targett would qualify for Scotland due to his grandfather and, after Gareth Southgate declined to include him in the England squad for games against Ivory Coast and Switzerland last month, they’re said to be watching him closely after losing Kieran Tierney to injury.

The former Southampton man has featured for both England and Scotland’s youth teams – Scotland Under 19s and more recently England Under 21s.

He could receive his call-up as early as June with Scotland still to play their World Cup Qualifier against Ukraine and potentially Wales in the play-off final for a place at Qatar where they would face England in Group B.

  1. One minute Olly is referring to Fraser as “NUFC Star” now you apply the same term to Targett? Is there anyone on the team you guys don’t think is a star?
