New name linked with NUFC move as Toon are tipped to sign £17m Wolfsburg star

As reported by French outlet Jeunes Footeux, Newcastle are interested in Wolfsburg centre-back Maxence Lacroix with West Ham and Aston Villa also in the running.

The 22-year-old has been key for the German club alongside the experienced John Brooks, helping his team finish fourth in the Bundesliga last season.

A fee of around £17million has been mooted and could be ideal for Newcastle – who may not have as much to spend as most people think but are still in desperate need of defensive reinforcements.

Reported as one of the quickest central defenders in the world, the Frenchman tends to use his pace to step out of the defensive line and stop attacks at the source, requiring a more experienced defensive partner to stay back and read the game well.

In his time in the Bundesliga, the youngster has also had some disciplinary issues, receiving three red cards and six yellows in 36 games this season – something Howe would certainly have to coach out of him if we were to make a move.

As we enter an important summer, young players like Lacroix who enjoy the ball at their feet and play with more freedom will be key to any success we hope to have next season.
