Surprise permanent move announced after talk of an initial loan – Official Newcastle statement

Newcastle United have confirmed that Freddie Woodman has completed a move to Preston North End.

It had been widely reported that the goalkeeper would join the Championship side on an initial loan, however Newcastle have announced that he’s actually left the club on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

Preston have revealed that he’s signed a three-year deal at Deepdale, with a move away from St James’ Park feeling like the right move for all parties when he was way down the pecking order under Eddie Howe and entering the final 12 months of his contract on Tyneside.

After excelling at Swansea during the 2020/21 season, the 25-year-old spent the second half of last season at Bournemouth, but didn’t make a single Championship appearance under Scott Parker.

Now Nick Pope looks set to arrive from Burnley to provide some added competition for Martin Dubravka, Woodman is right to find a new home – opposed to sealing another loan move and potentially leaving for nothing next summer.

  1. Good business. Best of luck to the lad, I think we’ll see him back in the Premier League one day.
