“We must be barmy!” – Burnley fans react to Nick Pope’s imminent move to Newcastle United

With Nick Pope’s move to Newcastle United set to be announced any minute now, it feels like a good time to see what Burnley fans make of his imminent arrival.

After visiting Burnley forum ‘Up The Clarets‘, it was immediately clear how highly they rate the 30-year-old, wishing him all the best after six years of service – although some seemed miffed he’s left for a Saudi-owned Newcastle!

His reflexes for a 6ft 5′ giant and ability to claim crosses were praised, but some questioned how he’d cope if Eddie Howe plans to play out from the back, believing he isn’t the best with the ball at his feet.

They also seemed baffled by the reported transfer fee, with the majority shocked to see him on the way out for just £10m, as reported by Sky Sports.

Some feel he should be England’s number one and many value him at double – if not TREBLE – the fee we look set to pay, suggesting we’ve landed ourselves a real bargain here.

Here’s what we found when scouring the Burnley forum:

You’ll be missed, Nick. We’d have been relegated long before last season if it wasn’t for his heroics. Top class shot stopper, quick off his line and dominant when high balls are hung into the box.

Bargain for the Mags but also a bit bizarre that a manager who likes to play out from the back has signed a goalkeeper who has two left feet…

I wish he was off somewhere other than Newcastle but wish him all the best. Top, top goalkeeper even if he’s not the best at playing out from the back, which seems to be the modern way.

I’m willing to put my whole house on that when Pope leaves Burnley he will be Starting for England

England’s best goalkeeper for a reported £8-10m??? We must be barmy!

The only thing stopping him from being England number one is his kicking. It’s simply nowhere near good enough for that level.

Brilliant shot stopper, but I guess the question marks over his distribution will be put to the test if Eddie Howe has Newcastle playing out from the back next season…

I hope Newcastle get relegated. Nothing against Nick Pope, just the dirty money in football.

Great reflexes for a bloke his size and was so good at claiming crosses, taking all the pressure off our defence from corners and open play. He’ll be a big miss.

I wish Nick Pope every success in his move to Newcastle and thank him for all he’s done with Burnley. He’s too good to be playing at Championship level.

We sold Tom Heaton to Villa for around £9million – aged 33 and after some serious injuries. I haven’t a clue how Newcastle have managed to get Nick Pope for £10million!

They paid £25,000,000 for Wood. We shouldn’t be accepting anything less than this for Pope. He’s class.

  1. Hate to say this but Pope would be england number 1 if he played for a bigger named team, not because he would play any better than he does its because of the snobbery of the england manager. good luck popey
