Sky Sports: Doubts emerge over the long-term future of Jamaal Lascelles

Jamaal Lascelles’ future at Newcastle United remains up in the air, according to Sky Sports.

Keith Downie – Sky’s North-East correspondent – reports that our current captain ‘could well’ leave this summer, as question marks have emerged over his ‘long-term future’ at St James’ Park.

As things stand, the 28-year-old is our fourth choice centre-back, with him expected to start the season behind Sven Botman, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn in the pecking order.

Eddie Howe is believed to have been impressed by his professionalism, suggesting he’s never sulked during his time out of the side, however it creates a difficult situation when your skipper is spending most weeks on the sidelines.

Lascelles started just four of our final 16 games over the 2021/22 Premier League season, yet his first-team prospects may be limited even further following the £35m arrival of Sven Botman.

If he’s settled on Tyneside and happy to fight for his place, it may be that he stays, but it seems his situation is one to watch.

Should a decent offer come in – Nottingham Forest and Fulham have been linked – it may be a wise move for all parties if he’s thanked for his years of service and moved on?

  1. I think he may go but if he does he’ll be a miss. Standing up for the club and fans when McLaren had a pop at him at Everton away, calling out player’s not putting in the effort. Always proud to represent the club I think he’s been a good captain and player. Alas injuries and time seems to be catching him up,as it does us all.
Good luck if he moves on.
