New Lucas Paqueta claims arrive from Keith Downie and club “pushing hard” for loan deal

According to Keith Downie, Newcastle could sign a midfielder on loan before next Thursday’s deadline – but Lyon’s Lucas Paqueta is NOT someone we’re looking to sign this window.

All summer, there have been consistent links between us and the Brazilian – who is best friends with Bruno Guimaraes and the subject of a £34m bid from West Ham United.

However, Sky Sports remain adamant that Eddie Howe is not currently pursuing a deal for the 24-year-old, with us instead monitoring the loan market in search of a new midfielder.

On that subject, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has added that we are now “pushing hard” to sign Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea after agreeing a club record deal for Alexander Isak.

While many fans may favour a more defensive option, Gallagher is certainly someone who would suit Howe’s high-pressing style and will be keen to secure first-team football and impress Gareth Southgate ahead of the World Cup.

Here’s what Downie and Edwards have had to say, with the latter revealing that conflicting claims still exist surrounding Joao Pedro’s proposed move to St James’ Park.
