Sky Sports: Newcastle ‘circling’ for PSV star – Southampton, Man Utd and Leeds also keen

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are one of several Premier League clubs eyeing a late move for PSV winger Cody Gakpo.

Melissa Reddy – a senior report for Sky – claims that Newcastle “have been circling”, with Southampton also keen after having a £21m bid rejected by the Dutch giants earlier today.

Leeds are also in the mix, while Manchester United and Arsenal are also named as clubs who’ve joined the race for the talented 23-year-old who’s expected to land a Premier League move before Thursday’s 11pm deadline.

Gakpo has bagged an outstanding four goals and six assists in eight appearances in all competitions this season, following on from a stunning 2021/22 campaign that saw him involved in 36 goals.

A move for the PSV captain seems unlikely if Howe’s comments earlier today are anything to go by – where he hinted at loans or nothing over the next 48 hours – but you just never know after our new owners sanctioned a club record deal for Alexander Isak!

Speaking on The Transfer Show on Tuesday tea time, here’s what Sky Sports News’ Melissa Reddy has had to say:

“His camp believe it’s a massive possibility [leaving before Thursday’s 11pm deadline].

“Southampton have had a bid rejected, Newcastle have been circling, there’s talk of Leeds registering interest.

“The thing with Gakpo and the reason [Manchester] United were looking at him, as well as being an exciting player, is that it would be smooth business to get done – and PSV have always said they can’t hold onto their key targets if big clubs come in with good money.

“He profiles very similarly to Sadio Mane with and without the ball, the data shows he’s quite a similar mould of player. [Manchester] United looked at Mane in 2016 and have always been trying to find that kind of player.

“It’s not surprising a lot of Premier League clubs are looking at him. One of the other names I was told to keep an eye out for are Arsenal, who would like to enhance their offensive options.

“His people feel pretty confident given the amount of clubs looking at him. It wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if he’s unveiled at a Premier League club before Thursday.”

“He has said it depends which club fits best for him. He doesn’t mind staying at PSV, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone – especially the player – if he’s being unveiled by a Premier League club before the deadline.”
