Newcastle plan behind closed doors friendly as Eddie Howe raises concerns – The Telegraph

As reported by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, Newcastle United have approached multiple teams in hope of organising a behind closed door game during the international break this weekend.

With games having been postponed due to the unfortunate passing of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the upcoming international break, Newcastle will have played just one game in four weeks – creating concerns over a lack of match fitness.

Eddie Howe and his coaching staff are worried about players losing sharpness over this period and it’s very likely that many other teams who don’t have an abundance of international players will be in a similar position.

On a positive note, the break will give our injured players, such as Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, plenty of time to recover and return to training in the hope that they can make an appearance in our next game against Fulham.

However, whilst this may benefit us in the short-term, the fixture rearrangements will surely only add to the pressure of an already congested season due to the upcoming World Cup, but here’s hoping we can get our season back on track upon the league’s return.

  1. I would love to believe that lack of match fitness was the cause of our recent poor performances – however – I honestly don’t think that’s the case.
