Spurs boss Antonio Conte believes it won’t be long until Newcastle United are competing for trophies and a place in the top four.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Italian feels we are a threat to ‘big six’ sides competing at the top, predicting that Eddie Howe’s Mags are a “dangerous team” who will even be pushing “for the title” before long.
The project on Tyneside has often been described as ‘evolution not revolution’, suggesting we are planning for a steady rise to success, however there’s no doubt our Saudi owners want to compete at the very top; both domestically and in Europe.
To do that, we’ll have to hold our own against top sides, making Sunday’s trip to Spurs another big test of where we’re at. We’ve lost just once all season – a feat only Man City and Arsenal have matched so far – and won three of our last four, but with injuries and fatigue kicking in ahead of our third game in a week, this will be a real challenge.
Here’s what Conte had to say when asked about Newcastle’s progress under Howe:
“You can see you have to consider Newcastle for the present and the future as a dangerous team, for the title and to win trophies.
“They needed a bit of time, but they have had the potential to go into the market and become one of the best teams in England.
“For this reason, many clubs have to pay great attention because, in my opinion, I see Newcastle in the future being really dangerous for a place in the Champions League and win trophies.”
