Newcastle hold ‘secret weapon’ in battle for Spanish defender – Report

Despite interest from Chelsea and Arsenal, Newcastle could sneak in to sign Benfica defender Alex Grimaldo as the left-back shares the same agent with Eddie Howe, according to The Express.

With the 27-year-old into the final year of his contract and stating he wants to leave, many clubs are considering Grimaldo as a free agent for next season or a cheap deal in January with Newcastle having ‘entered the frame’ in recent weeks.

The former Barcelona player has appeared 21 times for the Portuguese side this season, registering seven goals and assists along the way with four of them coming in the Champions League.

As a full-back, his attacking prowess and excellent technical ability could well be an upgrade on the likes of Matt Targett and Dan Burn who are currently occupying that position at the club.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Howe ‘appreciates’ the defender’s talents and their sharing of the same agent could be ‘a plus for Newcastle’ should they persist with their interest in Grimaldo.
