€9m release clause goes public as Newcastle eye January move for midfielder – Report

Newcastle have discovered a €9m release clause in the contract of Velez Sarfield midfielder Maximo Perrone, according to Spanish outlet Revelo.

The 19-year-old – who owns a Spanish passport – is expected to depart over the coming months, with the Argentine side resigned to losing their star midfielder. Newcastle are said to be the ‘most interested’ club, with a move to Europe on the cards in 2023.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with Perrone, as reports in South American claimed last week that we were preparing an opening bad after holding talks.

His current deal is also set to expire in December 2023, meaning the youth international will be forced to decide on his future very soon.

Sporting Director Dan Ashworth has proven at Brighton how well he can find young, exciting and relatively cheap talent from South America – Moises Caicedo being a prime example.

So, there is no real surprise that we are after the defensive midfielder who has already shown glimpses of brilliance in his home country, earning him a call-up to the Argentinian Under-20s team.

While still struggling with FFP restrictions due to a lack of commercial income, a cut-price move for a young gem like Perrone could be ideal for us; especially when he’d have plenty of time to grow and adapt under the ever-improving Eddie Howe.
