Ex-Mag embarrasses himself live on Sky Sports with bizarre comments on Sven Botman

Kieron Dyer did little to help his unpopularity on Tyneside on Saturday night, with the former Toon midfielder speaking like a man who had something against Newcastle United while on punditry duty for Sky Sports.

Dyer, who played for us between 1999-2007 and left for West Ham United – where he made 30 appearances over four years – has now told Sven Botman what he should do with his future.

The midfielder, apparently blind of the league table, has said Botman “looks like he could play in the top four” and go onto “bigger and better things” than Newcastle.

Eddie Howe’s Mags, currently third, boast the Premier League’s best defense this season – keeping a league high of 12 clean sheets and conceding the least goals (11) in the division.

Dyer then admitted he’d “never heard of Botman” prior to his summer move to St James’ Park. For a man who was literally being paid for his ‘expert opinion’ on Saturday night, that’s slightly embarrassing – especially when the Dutch defender helped Lille to the Ligue 1 title in 2020/21 and has Champions League appearances to his name.

Here’s his painful and frankly disrespectful comments following our 0-0 draw at Palace:

“Botman…I’ve never even heard of Botman.

“He looks like he could play in the top four.

“No disrespect to Newcastle because they are in the top four…

“But I am talking… He could go on to bigger and better things, with regards to clubs with pedigrees and history.”

So he’d never heard of Botman a few months ago, but he’s already adamant he could play in the top four (he already does, Kieron) and for a much bigger club than Newcastle United? Right. Another pundit making big claims despite showing surface level knowledge of one of Europe’s most highly-rated centre-backs.

This is from the same football genius who claimed that Steve Bruce was playing Joelinton in midfield prior to Eddie Howe! Almost like he just makes it up on the spot.

Dyer is either bitter, uninformed or deliberately provocative. What are your thoughts?

  3. My thoughts are that you aren’t as bright as you like to think you are, and you are just having a go at Dyer because you think your tabloid, click-baiting headline will get you a few extra views.
So Dyer had no idea who Botman was? Big fat hairy deal. I’d take a guess and say neither did 95% of Toon fans until we went in for him.
Was Dyer offering his views on European football? Has he EVER offered his views on European football on Sky? Is the fact that he didn’t know who Botman was even relevant here?
Does not knowing who Botman was 6 months ago somehow disqualify him from thinking he’s decent now? If your answer is yes you are telling thousands of fans they can’t have an opinion.

You make a big deal about Dyer saying Botman could play in the top four, then, wanting to appear all-knowing you point out that Newcastle are in the top four, completely ignoring the bit later in your “article” that you point out that Dyer himself says “no disrespect to Newcastle because they are in the top four”.
For 3 days we were in 2nd place in the league – does that make us the second best club in the Prem? Don’t you think that Dyer was maybe suggesting that Botman could play for one of the PROVEN top 4 clubs (City, Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool) )? You do see that there is a difference, don’t you?
You try to belittle Dyer by highlighting the fact that he only played 30 times for West Ham in 4 years. I’m guessing that’s 30 times more than you played for anyone in the Prem.
    Or the Championship.
    Or League 1.
    Or League 2.
Do I need to keep going?
He did play 225 games in the prem. Not too shabby.
Then of course there’s the rookie trend where you resort to “Dyer told Botman….”
Did I miss something? Was Botman there? Was he speaking to him?
I appreciate that the stock response to these comments will be SMB, when the truth is I’m a long time fan who just gets pissed off with kids with keyboards trying to show off to their schoolmates, painting Toon fans as a bunch of brainwashed, ignorant morons.
