Sky Sports: Premier League rivals threatened by three major punishments after FFP breach

Man City have been charged by Premier League with numerous breaches of financial fair play rules following a four-year investigation.

It’s believed the club have been hit with more than 100 charges by the Premier League, with Sky Sports reporting that heavy punishment is expected should they be proven guilty.

Man City will undoubtedly contest the charges, but it’s thought a points deduction, transfer ban or potential expulsion from the Premier League are possible sanctions.

For me, this feels like a major test of FFP. The rules ensure Premier League clubs spend what they earn, so if Man City have breached this over NINE seasons with false information and over 100 charges, either the league comes down hard and stamp their authority, or the entire FFP system is undermined.

Any potential punishments will not come into play until the case is settled – and you can expect Man City to contest it fiercely – but this is a watch and learn moment for Newcastle United’s new owners, who have been keen to stress the importance of working within FFP guidelines for almost 18 months now.
