Disaster strikes for Newcastle’s top four rivals as key player is ruled out for the season

Newcastle may have left Bournemouth with a frustrating 1-1 draw on Saturday, but top four rivals Tottenham endured a MUCH more damaging weekend.

Not only did Spurs lose 4-1 at Leicester, they suffered their FOURTH long term injury of the week as star midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur limped off with a serious knee injury.

Following an MRI scan, it’s now been confirmed that the all-action Uruguayan will miss the remainder of the season, with this coming just days after fellow midfielder Yves Bissouma and club captain Hugo Lloris were also ruled out for a couple of months.

Ryan Sessegnon is also facing six weeks on the sidelines – leaving Ivan Perisic as the club’s only fit left-back – so it really has been a hugely damaging weeks for Antonio Conte.

OK, we missed a chance to move four points clear of our top four rivals in failing to beat Bournemouth, but we are a point ahead, with a game in hand AND still have them to play at St James’ Park this season.

Considering their injury stricken squad also has the Champions League and FA Cup to navigate over the next few weeks – where they’re due to play seven times in over the coming month – it remains advantage Newcastle in our bid for a top four finish.

As for results elsewhere, Chelsea and Brighton were also held to frustrating draws on the road. So, while Saturday was a sloppy performance and missed opportunity, it’s not like those around us took advantage of our slip up. In fact, as far as Tottenham are concerned, they only fell further behind.
