£35m clause could be triggered by Newcastle as president confirms Premier League contact

As reported by Spanish outlet AS, Newcastle are ‘willing to trigger’ the £35m release clause in Gabri Veiga’s contract at Celta Vigo – but it seems we’ll face stiff competition to sign the Spanish U21 star.

Club president Carlos Mouriño has revealed today that “four of the top 10 Premier League clubs” have “asked for info” on Veiga, accepting his low release clause makes it “impossible” for the club to keep him.

The 20-year-old has already scored nine and assisted three in 25 league appearances this season and picked up the player of the month award for February, emerging as one of the hottest new prospects in La Liga.

Real Madrid have been heavily linked, but it’s thought Newcastle, Man United and Arsenal are also showing interest and have sent scouts to watch the midfielder in recent months.

He ticks plenty boxes for Newcastle and was mentioned as a player of interest in a recent piece by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards; which makes sense when we’re in the market for future stars and a couple of midfielders following Jonjo Shelvey’s exit.

However, with a relatively low release clause for a player of his age and potential, we may do well to win this race if a number of European giants are prepared to pay the £35m.
