Newcastle ‘in talks’ to sign versatile striker on pre-contract agreement – Report

According to new reports, Newcastle United have been in talks over a potential summer move for Marcus Thuram.

As revealed by 90min, it’s believed discussions have taken place between Toon chiefs and the representatives of the Borussia Monchengladbach striker; who is out of contract at the end of the season and set to be available on a free transfer.

Inter Milan are also in the running for the 25-year-old, with both teams heavily linked with the French international during the January transfer window.

A few months later, it seems ourselves and the Serie A giants are now attempting to strike a pre-contract agreement with the versatile forward who has bagged an impressive 15 goals and four assists in 26 appearances this season.

90min report that Inter currently believe they are leading the race for Thuram’s signature, but Newcastle remain in the mix. Given we are battling FFP constraints while trying to recruit quality players, it would make sense for us to pursue some of the better ‘free agents’ available this summer.

However, out of contract stars like Thuram are always likely to attract fierce competition, with high wage demands also common due to the lack of transfer fee.

Allan Saint-Maximin used to play alongside the Frenchman at youth level and had this to say about the player when asked about the Newcastle links a few months ago:

“Yeah, I will be honest, I have chatted with him.

“He is a great player and I hope we have a chance to take him here.

“I was so happy for him [during the World Cup]. For me, he’s a great player.

“I’ve known this guy a long time. I’ve been playing football with him when I was very young.

“I know all his family. He has great parents. He’s an incredible guy.”
