Keith Downie: 7 signings could arrive this summer and budget on course for major boost

According to Sky Sports‘ Keith Downie, Newcastle are expected to bring in ‘six or seven’ new players should we secure a top-four finish.

Speaking from outside St James’ Park, the North-East reporter discussed how Champions League football would impact and enhance our summer budget.

It’s believed we were ‘at our FFP limit’ after Anthony Gordon’s £40m move from Everton in January, but a place in the top four and spot alongside Europe’s elite would do wonders from a financial perspective, allowing us to ‘push back’ on spending limitations and pave the way for an exciting summer.

Downie explains that we would receive an immediate cash boost for qualifying for the Champions League, along with additional cash per win/per point, TV rights money from major broadcasters and the likelihood of more lucrative sponsorship deals that could present themselves should we see off the likes of Spurs, Liverpool and Brighton in the final few weeks of the season.

He adds that this summer ‘could be the biggest’ we’ve seen since new owners arrived and a real turning point, highlighting the importance of a strong finish and three more points when we travel to Everton on Thursday.

Here’s what Downie’s had to say when asked about our summer transfer plans:
