Sky Sports release VAR audio from controversial decision at St James’ Park – Fascinating footage

Sky Sports have released the audio from VAR officials during the controversial decision to reverse our penalty against Arsenal earlier this month.

It was revealed on Monday Night Football – where Howard Webb made a guest appearance – that the VAR encouraged the on-field referee to overturn his decision and outright stated that it was not a handball by Jakub Kiwior.

Whilst it could be debated either way, many fans at the time felt like this was not a clear and obvious error and were left surprised that it was overturned.

Another area of debate is that the VAR insisted that the ball ‘hit the thigh’ rather than suggesting that the referee should take another look and come to his own conclusions.

It may have been the right decision, but the margins were so close it felt harsh to claim it was a clear error by the referee. It certainly had a huge impact on the match, as Arsenal benefited the long break in play; halting our early momentum in a game they went on to win 2-0.

  1. CluFeless
In case you don’t get it that’s “F” in Clueless.
There’s a trend to “debate” every decision made against us, whether it’s by the Ref or by VAR
Regardless of whether or not it makes any sense.
Decisions are automatically labeled “scandalous” and “controversial” with anything we disagree with also getting a free “pathetic” thrown in, because that’s what the fans want to believe, and like a certain Newcastle MP, bloggers realise you need the mob on your side if you’re going to get anywhere.
Commonly referred to in blogging as “playing to the mob!”
The ref is happy to overturn his decision claiming the arm is going in, because by watching the replay a number of times he (AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET) can clearly see that there is no actual evidence to suggest that the ball even hits the arm.
