Updates on Newcastle’s ongoing interest in Dominik Szoboszlai and James Maddison have emerged from NewcastleWorld.
They report that the club have held ‘further talks’ with Szoboszlai in recent days, stating that lines of communication remain open with RB Leipzig over a potential summer move for the 22-year-old Hungarian.
His £61m release clause is due to expire next Friday and it’s believed Newcastle could look to negotiate a fee below that figure if we move on from Maddison.
The same outlet reveals that our pursuit of the Foxes midfielder has failed to progress this month, with two key factors causing problems following talks.
One issue is Leicester’s heft asking price. It’s believed they are refusing to lower their £60m price tag – a huge fee for a relegated player in the final 12 months of his deal. The second issue is thought to be Maddison’s wage demands, with NewcastleWorld revealing that the 26-year-old wants a salary that would make him the highest earner on Tyneside.
Maddison is Premier League proven and clearly a player Eddie Howe rates highly following two rejected bids last summer, but a move for Szoboszlai could be on the cards if Leicester or the player’s demands aren’t lowered soon.
It would be a better move if it comes off. Played in the middle of a three in a 4-2-3-1 I think he is just the player to unlock parked buses. in our current style of 4-3-3 alongside Tonali and Bruno he would be more forward but he would certainly give us tactical options
