Tonali delay explained as Fabrizio Romano reveals when official announcement should arrive

Fabrizio Romano has told Newcastle fans “don’t worry”, explaining why official confirmation on Sandro Tonali’s imminent move to Tyneside won’t come the weekend.

The Italian released a ‘here we go!’ announcement on the midfielder yesterday and insists today that a deal is ‘all done and agreed.’ However, there’s ‘some technical formalities’ to sort, meaning his unveiling as a Newcastle United player will have to wait a few days and may not arrive until the middle of next week.

Speaking to Sky Italy from Milan airport last night, the player’s agent – Beppe Riso – said, “This is an excellent deal, Newcastle is the perfect project for Tonali. Newcastle wanted Sandro as key signing at all costs. He will be a crucial player for Magpies. This deal also helps AC Milan and Brescia’s finances a lot”.

Tonali is currently in Romania competing at the U21 European Championships. Italy are due to face Switzerland at 5pm tomorrow night, so his involvement in the tournament may explain part of the delay.

Romano has shared this Saturday morning update on the deal, followed by his latest tweet explaining the situation:

‘Of course, the big news this week is Newcastle United on the verge of officially confirming the signing of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan. Don’t worry Magpie fans – the deal is all done and agreed, it is just going to take some time for the formal details to be finalised before the club can announce Italy’s most expensive ever player. Tonali has agreed a contract until 2029 worth up to £7.7m-per season.’
