The Newcastle squad have been asked to select their unsung hero for the season, with Sean Longstaff and Matt Ritchie picking up a lot of the plaudits from behind the scenes.
While it’s easy to to see how certain players are effective on the pitch, the 10-minute clip released by the club (watch it in full below) gives a great insight into those who offer so much behind the scenes.
Ritchie in particular isn’t a name you’d expect any fan to choose as an unsung hero, but he was picked by Burn, Bruno and Gordon, being described as a ‘vocal leader’ for both the young and experienced players.
The overwhelming favourite was Longstaff, another who quite often goes under the radar. However, his incredible ‘work rate’ and passion for the club definitely hasn’t gone unnoticed by the rest of the squad.

It’s quite telling that Longstaff was picked by Trippier, Anderson, Isak, Botman, Murphy, Targett and Krafth, who point out that he doesn’t get anywhere near the credit that he deserves for his work on and off the ball.
Honourable mentions for some the coaching staff and analysts – who also do some unbelievable work that is never picked up on by the media – was also a nice touch.
