Toon chiefs sanction another big signing after Sandro Tonali & Saudi rumour denied – Report

It sounds like our summer spending won’t stop at Sandro Tonali, as Mark Douglas at the ipaper has revealed that another big signing is expected to join the Italian on Tyneside.

In his latest piece, the North East reporter states that funds have been made available to bring in a second “elite” midfielder, with the club planning to ‘move swiftly’ on their next target after wrapping up a deal for the AC Milan star.

Links of a loan bid for Ruben Neves have been rubbished, however. Douglas insists that Al Hilal’s new £47m man will not be signing as a favour from the Saudi PIF. It’s thought their dealings in KSA will ‘not benefit’ Newcastle ‘in any way’, according to senior sources.

Leicester’s James Maddison and RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai have both been heavily linked, but it remains to be seen if we’ll pursue an attacking midfielder able to play down the right or an out and out ‘No 6’ that can shield our back four. Personally, I’d expect the former to be pursued, providing Eddie Howe with a first-team upgrade on Miguel Almiron.

After another ‘elite’ midfielder signs, Douglas insists that we’ll have to ‘box clever’ over the remainder of the summer window, suggesting there’ll be limited funds available to sign a left-back, right-sided centre-back and young striker able to learn from Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

  1. Maddison got home from England duty after the match on Monday. If he doesn’t make up his mind in the next few days Dominik Szoboszlai’s release clause ends at the end of June.

I think I prefer Dominik Szoboszlai a more natural no8/10 capable of unpicking parked buses.

A good number 6 is a good choice but is Thuram available to us.

In terms of an upgrade on Miggy then either Diaby or Marcus Edwards is a possibility.

I can’t see us spending big money on a defender

Kephren Thuram wouldn’t come cheap, he’s a great young player but not polished yet. He’s really more of an 8 than a 6.
