Great news for Newcastle as Anthony Gordon inspires England to quarter-final win

After scoring in our final day draw with Chelsea back in May, Anthony Gordon has gone from strength to strength.

He was called up to the Young Lions squad for the U21 European Championships and kicked off the tournament with a lovely assist in their opening game win over Czech Republic, with his clever back-heel setting up Villa’s Jacob Ramsey. Gordon thought he’d scored moments later, smashing a lovely first-time finish into the far corner, but it was ruled out by VAR.

That was followed by a brilliant near post header against Israel – their second game of the group stage – and he’s been amongst the goals again in tonight’s quarter-final clash with Portugal.

After a lovely move from England, Gordon latched onto Morgan Gibbs-White’s cut-back and fired home to give the Young Lions a 1-0 win. Watch the goal (1:00 onwards) below:

Smart movement from our £40m man and an emphatic finish, with his strike setting up a semi-final against Israel.

That’s now two goals and an assist in three starts at the U21 Euros, giving him a huge confidence boost ahead of his return for pre-season training. Great news for Eddie Howe and brilliant to see the winger hitting some form ahead of the 2023/24 season.
